Judge Admonishes Settlement Within Church As Court Court Quashes Fraud Charges Against Clergy

Justice J.A Aina of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Gwagwalada, has advised members of the body of Christ  to embrace reconciliation and resolve internal disputes amicably, describing the case before the court as a family affair that should never have escalated to litigation.

The judge gave the admonition after quashing a five-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and criminal misappropriation filed against a former pastor of the church, Reverend Akanji and five others.

The ruling followed a motion by the defence counsel, Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), who argued that the court lacked jurisdiction and that the prosecution’s failure to file a counter-affidavit rendered the defence’s claims unchallenged and legally admissible.

In his ruling on Thursday, Justice Aina held that the police failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendants.

“I have considered the totality of the affidavits and exhibits filed by the Nigeria Police Force. They do not support the continuation of this case.

“We must first, settle the issue of jurisdiction. Where there is no jurisdiction, no other issue can survive,” the judge stated.

He added that by failing to respond to the application, the police effectively conceded to the defence’s claims.

Accordingly, the court found merit in the application and struck out the charges without awarding costs to either party.

Taking a moral tone after delivering his ruling, Justice Aina urged church members to seek peaceful resolution within the fold.

“This is a family matter that should be resolved internally,” he said.

“As Christians, we must portray the light Christ has shown us. It is not right that such matters find their way into the courtroom.”

The defendants—Reverend Akanji, Reverend Thomas Ekugbene Takpatore, Mr Babatunde Adebayo, Mrs Adenike Adebayo, Mr Oladele Afolabi and Mrs Gloria Olotu—were accused in charge no CR/1045/24 of conspiring in 2021 to commit a felony under Section 97 of the Penal Code.

They were also alleged to have forged an amended church constitution, falsely attributing authorship to the late Barrister Akin Aina, the church’s former legal adviser—an offence under Sections 362 and 364 of the Penal Code.

The police alleged that between 2012 and 2021, the defendants misappropriated N620 million belonging to the church, in violation of Sections 308, 309, 311 and 312 of the Penal Code relating to breach of trust and fraudulent conversion.

With the charges now dismissed, the court’s verdict serves as a reminder for faith-based institutions to pursue internal resolution of conflicts and avoid public legal battles that may tarnish their spiritual mission.

Oduduwa Frontiers Counters Afenifere’s Criticism Of Tinubu’s Midterm Performance

…says Nigeria’s challenges are inherited, complex

The Oduduwa Frontiers has strongly disagreed with recent comments by the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, regarding the midterm performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing their assertions as “misleading” and lacking in proper context.

In a statement issued by its National President, Kolawale Adediji Kazeem on Thursday, the Oduduwa Frontiers expressed disappointment at Afenifere’s claim that Nigeria’s development indicators have regressed under the current administration, calling the remarks “unrealistic” and “uninformed.”

He said: “The assertion that every human development and sociopolitical index has regressed since the inception of this administration is not only misleading but also reflects a profound misunderstanding of the complexities facing our nation today.

“Firstly, it is essential to recognize that the challenges confronting Nigeria are multifaceted and deeply rooted in years of mismanagement and neglect. The previous administration left a legacy fraught with economic instability, infrastructural decay, and social unrest.

“To hold President Tinubu accountable for the consequences of these long-standing issues is not only unfair but also undermines the very essence of responsible governance.

“The Oduduwa Frontiers believes that a fair and constructive evaluation of any administration must take into account the context in which it operates, including the historical and socio-economic challenges inherited from predecessors.”

The Oduduwa Frontiers criticized Afenifere for what it described as an unrealistic expectation of instant results, noting that the “Renewed Hope” agenda was never a promise of overnight transformation, but a call to long-term reform and national recovery.

“The Tinubu administration has faced unprecedented challenges, including economic shocks, security threats, and a global environment still reeling from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors, which were largely unforeseen, have significantly influenced the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.

“Moreover, it is disheartening to see Afenifere, a group historically committed to the principles of democracy and good governance, join the ranks of those who hastily judge the Tinubu administration without acknowledging the broader context. The political landscape is rife with complexities, and it is crucial to engage in informed discourse rather than resort to sensationalism.

“The Oduduwa Frontiers advocates for a constructive dialogue that encourages collaboration among all stakeholders, including political opponents, to foster a more robust democratic process.

“It is also vital to highlight the efforts made by the Tinubu administration in addressing pressing issues. Initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing security, and promoting economic diversification are already underway.

“While the outcomes may not be immediately visible, the groundwork being laid today is crucial for sustainable development in the future. The Oduduwa Frontiers urges Afenifere and other critics to recognize these efforts and engage in a more nuanced discussion about the progress being made.

The group called on Afenifere to reassess its position and approach to evaluating the Tinubu administration.

“We implore them to move beyond sensational rhetoric and to engage in constructive criticism that acknowledges the complexities of governance. As a nation, we must unite in our efforts to foster a democratic environment that promotes dialogue, understanding, and collaboration.” they added.

Nothing Like Cabal in Tinubu’s Government — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has denied allegations that some power brokers are influencing the governance of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike said this at the 2025 OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture in Ile-Ife, the Osun State capital, on Thursday, where he delivered the keynote lecture at the event.

“He has shown that he has the courage. Under Tinubu, there is nothing like cabal. This is a president that is in charge,” he said.

The minister stated that all former Nigerian presidents, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, were not bold enough to remove the petrol subsidy and unify the foreign exchange rates.

Wike said so many people would still be benefiting from fuel subsidy fraud had Tinubu not removed it.

According to him, though Nigeria has underperformed in the last six decades since independence, and all imaginable fault lines are cracking, the nation can still rise and blaze in glory if the right governance frameworks are put in place.

The minister stressed the rebuilding of trust and the strengthening of the cord of unity in diversity for Nigeria to forge forward.

He said the desired Nigeria won’t fall from heaven but will require the vision, sacrifice, hard work and purpose of all citizens. “Let us leave for the next generation to resolve and not regrets,” he said, urging all Nigerians to be committed to the nation’s building.

The politician took a swipe at his detractors, calling for his removal as minister. He said something was wrong with those who claimed he lacked the capacity to deliver.

The minister insisted that ground rent debtors in the nation’s capital city, Abuja, must pay their outstanding debts, adding that heaven would not fall if they did so.

The event was also attended by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; former Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom; among others.

Trump Signs New Travel Ban, Barring Chad, Congo, 10 Others From Entering US

US President Donald Trump has signed a new proclamation barring citizens from 12 countries from entering the United States, citing national security concerns.

The full travel ban affects nationals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

The restriction will take effect on June 9, 2025.

In addition to the full bans, the proclamation imposes partial restrictions on citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.

There are some exemptions, including athletes travelling for major sporting events, some Afghan nationals and dual nationals with citizenship in unaffected countries, according to the BBC.

Trump stated that the measure is intended to prevent individuals considered potential security risks from gaining entry into the US.

“We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen,” he said in a video message posted on X on Wednesday.

According to the White House, the countries facing the harshest restrictions were deemed to have a “large-scale presence of terrorists,” poor cooperation on visa-related security measures, and inadequate systems for verifying travelers’ identities.

The administration also cited issues such as poor record-keeping of criminal histories and high visa overstay rates as contributing factors.

The new directive builds on Trump’s broader immigration crackdown initiated at the beginning of his second term.

On January 20, the president signed an executive order mandating stricter security checks for foreign nationals and instructing federal agencies to review which countries should face entry suspensions due to inadequate vetting procedures.

This move echoes Trump’s controversial travel ban during his first term, which initially targeted seven predominantly Muslim countries and was upheld by the US Supreme Court in 2018.

The ban was later repealed by President Joe Biden in 2021, who described it as “a stain on our national conscience.”
