Classy: Celebrating Courageous Nigerians D’Tigress

0

Nigerian women’s basketball team opened up their Paris 2024 Olympic campaign, defeating World No. 3 ranked Team, Australia at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille. Australia started out strong, leading by 6 points, but then Ezinne Kalu turned things around for Nigeria.

D’Tigress affirmed their commitment to staying united and focused on their goal. “Regardless of any outcome, we stay the course, we stay together and we keep our eyes on the prize. We are not leaving here empty handed.

In a recent statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, D’Tigress expressed their gratitude for the support they received. “We really want to thank everyone so much for all the love we’ve received as a team yesterday. It really meant a lot to us. Truly, now that the dust has settled, we are mentally locked in more than ever”, the team stated.

The players emphasized their focus on maintaining momentum, with their coach highlighting that one win is not sufficient. “Momentum was our focus word today in practice. One win is not enough. We are not going to settle for that! We have made history”, the statement continued.

Though,  the D’Tigress, who have been the surprise team of the women’s basketball event at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympic Games, were brought down to earth, yesterday, by hosts, France, who beat the Nigerian girls 75 points to 54.

Although the scoreline looks lopsided in France’s favour, the game was by no means easy for the host, who only capitalised on the many Nigerian turnovers to carry the day.

France looks unstoppable and podium-ready by far, it’s early days, but they are not only on track according to expectation, they look fully-focused and physically dominant to others. With the crowd helping to provide energy too, this two-way street is really helping them shine. Their depth, talent, athleticism, and especially their defense are looking irresistible.

Nigeria’s chances of making the quarterfinals depend on their outing against Canada, on Sunday. The Canadians have already been eliminated following the loss to Australia, yesterday.

Nigeria will finish in the second position with an automatic quarterfinal ticket if they beat Canada. They can still finish second on the head-to-head count if France defeat Australia on, Sunday.

The D’Tigress could also progress as one of the best third-placed teams if they are not blown away by Canada.

How Adenike’s Intervention Foiled Nationwide Protest In Kogi

0

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

The Coalition of Concerned Kogi Indigenes (CCKI) had said it was the intervention of philanthropist Hajiya Halimat Adenike that made them shun the Nationwide Hunger Protest.

This is contained in a statement jointly signed and made available to newsmen by the chairman and secretary of the coalition, Philip Adamu Isah and Oheiza Anda Recheal respectively.

The statement reads ‘ the coalition wishes to make some clarifications regarding our decision to shun the Nationwide protest slated for August 1st- August 10th 2024.

“This press statement is very important because our attention has been drawn to different public comments, especially from stakeholders who does not even know what necessitated our actions, yet trying to claim the glory.

“We as concerned Kogi Indigenes with no fewer than one million members at this juncture want the general public to know that we have been following Kogi politics with keen interests, studying and to a large extent understand the dynamics and the complexity of our people in Kogi State.

“Kogi in recent times have suffered series of setback due to our perceived differences ranging from political affiliation, tribe, religion among other factors. For this reason and many more, the Confluence State ahead of the protest began to make consultations to distance ourselves from the national rage and toe the path of patience, peace and dialogue.

“This quest and understanding recently led to our partnership with key Nigerian patriots like Hajiya Halimat Adenike Tejuosho who is a philanthropist using her personal resources to support the less privilege using the QAT Foundation.

“We had several meetings with her in Lokoja and the FCT respectively, where she solicited our intervention to mobilize our people against the Nationwide protest in solidarity with the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led administration.”

While saying that Hajiya Halimat persuaded them that the president Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led government is just one year and should be given more time to address some of the challenges facing the country, she admitted that Nigerians are passing through hard times, but disclosed that the present Government inherited some liabilities from previous administration, hence, pacifying us to support President Tinubu instead of going out for protest that may result to violence in the state.

In her words, “you know Kogi will be bloody if you allow this protest to go on in your state. Kogi is divided across religious, tribal among other differences and because of that, a lot of people especially the opposition parties would take advantage of this protest to wreck havock in the state.” I called you here because I know you have the ears of your people and they will listen to you.”

With the understanding of our state and it’s political terrain, we gave Hajiya Halimat Adenike our word, that Kogi youths will not be part of any demonstration against the Tinubu’s led government and to the glory of God our people listened to us and refused to come out for the protest. The statement reads.

Today, Kogi like other states would have been in turmoil with citizens hard earned investment looted, innocent lives wasted with public and private organisations destroyed and everywhere in tension because of an act perpetrated by criminal minded elements in the name of protest.

Meanwhile, we want to use this opportunity to urge Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider competence in his next phase of appointment especially for the position of Humanitarian Affairs Minister.

Without any iota of doubt, COALITION OF CONCERNED KOGI INDIGENES (CCKI)
can boldly say that Hajiya Halimat Adenike has overtime demonstrated such level of humane and competence, using her personal funds to support the less privilege across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT. This gesture has earned her reputation globally, leading to different honorary awards.

Equally, without further delay, we call on Mr. President to as a matter of urgency appoint Hajiya Halimat Adenike as humanitarian affairs Minister to alleviate the plights of the citizens through the ministry.

Kaduna Electric Plunges Kaduna Govt. House Into Darkness Over N2.9 Billion Debt

0

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

The Kaduna Electricity Disco KEDCO has disconnected power supply to Sir Kashin Ibrahim (KADUNA Government)house over N2.9 billion debt for electricity consumed in seven months.

A statement signed by the Head, Corporation Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi said Friday in Kaduna.

Recall that in the early hours of Friday, the state government through its tax agency, the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) sealed the electricity coy over N600 million tax liabilities.

Abdullahi said the disconnection took effect after extensive efforts to resolve the issue through consultations and reconciliations.

According to the statement, “In a dramatic move that underscores growing tensions between utility providers and state governments, Kaduna Electric has cut off electricity supply to the Kaduna State Government House and other state government accounts due to unpaid bills.

“Kaduna Electric announced the disconnection after extensive efforts to resolve the issue through consultations and reconciliations. The outstanding balance for electricity consumed from January 2024 to July 2024 alone amounts to a staggering N1,166 billion. This figure, including the historical debt, has left the State Government with a huge debt that currently stands at a total of N2,943 billion.”

He said despite a recent payment of N256 million made on May 9, 2024, for electricity consumed between September 2023 and December 2023, the Kaduna State Government’s debt remains significantly high, “This payment, though substantial, has not been enough to clear the accumulated arrears.”

“Kaduna Electric’s decision to disconnect power came after repeated attempts to address the payment issues, including several consultations with state officials. In contrast, other states under the Kaduna Electric franchise, namely Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara, have maintained their accounts in good standing, regularly meeting their electricity payment obligations and other repayment obligations with Kaduna Electric.

“A disconnection notice was formally issued on July 21, 2024, and was received by the Office of the Governor on July 22, 2024. The move reflects the company’s need to meet its own financial obligations amidst the broader challenges facing the electricity sector,” he added.

He emphasized that the disconnection was a last resort after all other avenues for resolving the payment issue had been exhausted, noting that the company is now focusing on fulfilling its commitments to the electricity market and ensuring stability in its operations and sustainability as a company.

He disclosed that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had previously intervened in the Disco by installing an Administrator and Special Board to oversee the company during its transitional period prior to an official takeover by the current investors where the Administrator of Kaduna Electric had committed to an agreement with the Kaduna Inland Revenue Service to pay N20 million monthly including statutory monthly tax payments as required, which he said has been honored since takeover by the current Management.

He highlighted the urgent need for improved financial management and timely payments by government entities to avoid disruptions in essential services saying, “The public and stakeholders await further developments on how the Kaduna State Government will address the arrears and restore power to the affected government offices.”

Protests: Military Vows To Deal With Looters

CDS

The military on Friday warned looters taking advantage of the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests to desist from the destruction of lives and properties.

At a press conference in the nation’s capital Abuja on the second day of the rallies against economic hardship and high cost of living, the Chief of Defence Staff ,CDS,  General Christopher Musa, said the extent of destruction experienced on the first day of the demonstrations was “crazy”.

He said the Armed Forces will take action and won’t allow the looting and destruction to fester.

The defence chief said the Bola Tinubu administration has been in power for one year and the government has been doing its best to boost economic activities.

General Musa said the economic crisis and high cost of living in Nigeria is a global phenomenon. He urged Nigerians to give the government time to address the challenges.

He said, “So, we want to call on all Nigerians to understand the government. If you have grievances, which I know people have, a lot of challenges here and there, and it is not only in Nigeria alone; everywhere in the world is facing one economic or security crisis or the other. And so, it is important to understand that we are not alone.

“But what we can do is not allow criminals and individuals that have lost out to take advantage of this to destroy our country. We should realise that these destructions, monies have to be used to replace them so that we can move forward”.

On the first and second day of the protests, policemen were seen dispersing the demonstrators, mostly youths, using tear gas, even as civil society organisations ,CSOs, condemned the action of the police.

The protests turned awry when some hoodlums took advantage of the demonstrations and looted public and private assets.

In a bid to curb the looting, violence and other after-effects of the protests, the Kano, Borno, Yobe, Katsina, Nasarawa, Jigawa and other state governments imposed curfews in volatile local government areas in their states.

Some deaths have also been recorded, as claimed by Amnesty International. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun said a policeman was murdered, some cops injured, and police stations burnt.

Propagated on social media, the nationwide protests against economic hardship started on Thursday, August 1, 2024, and have been scheduled to stretch till August 10 across all states of the Federation as well as the nation’s capital Abuja.

Prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months, as Nigerians battle one of the country’s worst inflation rates and economic crises sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

Some of the demands of the protesters include the restoration of petrol subsidies and the forex regime. They also want the government to address food shortages, unemployment and wasteful spending by those in power. Other demands are immediate reforms of the electoral umpire INEC and anti-graft agency EFCC with renewed vigour in the fight against corrupt politicians.

‘Avoid Mayhem’

The defence chief said the message of peaceful protesters has already been passed to the federal, state and local governments.

He appealed to peaceful protesters not to allow troublemakers and fifth columnists to bring mayhem to the nation.

“We know we are challenged as a nation but we know we will overcome working together as Nigerians… Let us avoid anything that will bring mayhem to our country”, he said.

…’We Will Take Action’

General Musa said the level of destruction witnessed in some places on Thursday was unimaginable and the military won’t fold its arms.

“On Thursday, we saw the level of destruction that has been carried out. Just yesterday. So you can imagine if this continues for so long.

“Yesterday, we saw some people breaking down houses, stealing windows and doors. It was just crazy yesterday and we don’t want that to happen again.

“The Armed Forces and the entire security agencies will not stand by and see that to continue. We want to warn those that are recalcitrant; those that don’t want to listen that we will not fold our arms and allow this country to be destroyed.

“We will take action and the action we will take, we will take it professionally. Anyone that is caught will be taken to court and will be dealt with”, he said.

“There are a bunch of people who believe that it is only through this medium that they will be able to loot, steal and destroy. And that is what they tried to do yesterday but we have arrested most of them that broke into places to steal and they will be prosecuted accordingly”, he added.

… Military May Step In If…

The defence chief said the security forces stood up to their responsibilities on Thursday and the situation has been nipped.

General Musa said the police have been doing a good job managing the situation but the military won’t hesitate to step in if the situation degenerates.

“We are supporting the police all through. We are just on standby. The police is doing a good job; they are handling the situation for now. Unless it breaches beyond what they can handle then the military will step in. The military is on standby and we are watching day and night”, he said.

…’Sponsors Will Be Identified’

He further said some sponsors of the looting will be identified and dealt with.

“We are also going behind to ensure that we also identify those that are involved; there are individuals who are sponsoring them, pushing them to do this, we are going after them”, he said.

He urged the media not to give some people “who want a moment of fame” the opportunity.
