FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

Kaduna State Police Command had said it arrested 39 suspects including the tailor producing Russian flags during the “End Bad Governance,” Protest.

This is contained in a statement issued by the command’s public relations officer, ASP Mansir Hassan and made available to newsmen in Kaduna yesterday.

According to the statement, these individuals were seen displaying Russian and Chinese flags, mobilized and engaged in the vandalization of private and public properties. Among the damaged properties were a Hilux vehicle belonging to KADVS, a Toyota Yaris owned by a journalist, and the KASTLEA office in Zone 6, Zaria, which was set on fire.

“The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, intervened to restore order. During the confrontation, the suspects became hostile and resorted to using stones, catapults, and other weapons, however, the police managed to calm the situation with the minimal use of tear gas.”

Explaining further in the statement, 39 suspects were arrested in total at the scene, including a tailor who was sewing the foreign flags for the group. The police recovered 38 Russian flags, one Chinese flag, two catapults with a bag of stones, and various vandalized items.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Ali Dabigi, psc, while commending his officers, issued a stern warning to all residents to adhere to the imposed curfew.

While assuring that violators will face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law,
The CP also appealed to all citizens to cooperate with the Police and other Security Agencies during this critical period, saying that the curfew is in place to protect lives and property, and ensure the swift restoration of peace in Kaduna State.

Kamala Harris Formally Becomes Democratic Presidential Nominee

0

Vice President Kamala Harri formally secured the Democratic presidential nomination on Monday, becoming the first woman of color to lead a major party ticket.

More than four years after her first attempt at the presidency collapsed, Harris’ coronation as her party’s standard-bearer caps a tumultuous and frenetic period for Democrats prompted by President Joe Biden’s disastrous June debate performance that shattered his own supporters’ confidence in his reelection prospects and spurred extraordinary intraparty warfare about whether he should stay in the race.

Harris’ nomination became official after a five-day round of online balloting by Democratic National Convention delegates ended Monday night, with the party saying in a statement released just before midnight that 99% of delegates had cast their ballots for Harris. The party said it would next formally certify the vote before holding a celebratory roll call at the party’s convention later this month in Chicago.

Already Harris has telegraphed that she doesn’t plan to veer much from the themes and policies that framed Biden’s candidacy, such as democracy, gun violence prevention and abortion rights. But her delivery can be far fierier, particularly when she invokes her prosecutorial background to lambast Trump and his 34 felony convictions for falsifying business records in connection with a hush money scheme.

“Given that unique voice of a new generation, of a prosecutor and a woman when fundamental rights, especially reproductive rights, are on the line, it’s almost as if the stars have aligned for her at this moment in history,” said Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California, who was tapped to succeed Harris in the Senate when she became vice president.

Kamala Devi Harris was born October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to Shyamala Gopalan, a breast cancer scientist who emigrated to the United States from India when she was 19 years old, and Stanford University emeritus professor Donald Harris, a naturalised U.S. citizen originally from Jamaica.

She spent years as a prosecutor in the Bay Area before her elevation as the state’s attorney general in 2010 and then election as U.S. senator in 2016.

NERC Transfers Electricity Market Oversight To Oyo State

0

…As TCN denies collapse of national grid, says failure caused by line tripping

By Charles Ebi

Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission ,NERC, has transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Oyo State to the state’s Electricity Regulatory Commission ,OSERC.

This was announced by NERC in a public notice, stating that the action aligns with the provisions of the Electricity Act of 2023 and the 2023 amendments to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

NERC explained that the Oyo State government, having fulfilled the legal requirements outlined in the Electricity Act of 2023, notified the commission of its intent to regulate the electricity market within the state, which was subsequently approved.

The order states, “In compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria ,CFRN, and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, or the Commission, has issued an order to transfer regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Oyo State from the Commission to the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission ,OSERC ”.

“The EA also mandates any state that intends to establish and regulate intrastate electricity markets to deliver a formal notification of its processes and requests NERC to transfer regulatory authority over electricity operations in the state to the State Regulator”.

“Based on this, the Government of Oyo State complied with the conditions precedent in the laws, duly notified NERC and requested for the transfer of regulatory oversight of the intrastate electricity market in Oyo State”.

The transfer order by NERC included several provisions to be fulfilled by the electricity distribution company in charge of Oyo state-

It directed the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company ,IBEDC, to incorporate a subsidiary, IBEDC SubCo, to take over the responsibilities for the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Oyo State from IBEDC.

IBEDC was mandated to complete the incorporation of IBEDC SubCo within 60 days from August 6, 2024. The subsidiary was required to apply for and obtain a license for the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity from OSERC, along with other directives. All transfers specified by this order were to be completed by February 5, 2025.

Since the assenting of the Nigeria Electricity Act into law, states have begun taking advantage of the legislative provision to enact laws to control the electricity market in their state and attract the needed investments to grow the sector.

Ekiti, Ondo and Enugu states have taken pioneering steps in this regard, and it is expected that the NERC will begin issuing regulatory oversight to more states whose domesticated electricity law is in the pipelines.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria ,TCN, has refuted claims of a national grid collapse on Monday, clarifying that the incident involved only a line tripping at the Benin-Egbin 330kV isolator.

The spokesperson of the company, Ndidi Mbah, made this clarification in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

It should be recalled that some media outlets reported yesterday that the national grid collapsed, resulting in a nationwide blackout.

However, Mbah said the arcing on the Benin-Egbin 330kV did not result in the collapse of the grid system but did affect the power supply in some areas of the country.

He stated that the line tripping began around 2:47 p.m. yesterday, caused by a significant system surge that resulted in the arcing of the Benin-Egbin 330kV line isolator fingers at the Egbin Transmission Substation switchyard.

According to him, this issue has been resolved and power supply has been restored to the substation.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria ,TCN, hereby notes that at about 6:10 pm yesterday, 5th August 2024, power supply was restored to areas that had been affected by the arcing on the Benin-Egbin 330kV isolator which caused lines tripping and consequent loss of supply to some areas. However, contrary to media reports, the incident did not cause a system collapse.

“The lines tripping started earlier at about 2:47 p.m. yesterday, with a heavy system surge that led to the arcing of Benin–Egbin 330kV line isolator fingers at the Egbin Transmission Substation switchyard.

“This resulted in a tripping at the Egbin Generating Station, which caused the loss of power supply to all the Egbin Transmission Substation’s outgoing lines.

“The line tripping was quickly rectified, enabling the grid controller to restore full bulk power supply through the transmission lines at about 6.10 pm yesterday”, he said.

It was widely reported on different media outlets yesterday that the national grid collapsed for the fifth time in 2024.

According to these reports, various distribution companies ,DisCos, said their feeders became inactive, resulting in widespread blackouts across the country.

Moreover, Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s ,TCN’s, generation trend showed that the grid dropped from 3,241 megawatts ,MW, to 1,255MW within the hour. However, TCN said the grid did not collapse.

Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to grapple with the challenges of a fragile national grid, leading to frequent nationwide blackouts.

As of June 2024, the grid has experienced a collapse four different times.

These collapses have significantly contributed to electricity disruptions across the country.

As a result, businesses have been forced to rely on self-servicing generators to maintain their operations.

In November 2013, the federal government privatized all power generation and 11 distribution companies, while retaining ownership of the transmission company.

This move aimed to improve efficiency in the sector.

However, since privatization, the grid has continued to collapse despite ongoing efforts to reposition the power sector.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Quits After Weeks Of Deadly Protests

0

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday, ending 15 years in power as thousands of demonstrators defied a nationwide curfew and stormed her official residence.

In a televised address, Bangladesh’s military chief, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced he was assuming control at a “critical time for our country” and confirmed that Hasina left Dhaka for a “place of safety,” as local media reported neighboring India as her initial destination.

“I am taking responsibility now and we will go to the president and ask to form an interim government to lead the country in the meantime,” he said.

Zaman said the military would stand down and that an investigation would be launched into the deadly crackdowns that fueled outrage against the government.

“Keep faith in the military, we will investigate all the killings and punish the responsible … I have ordered that no army and police will indulge in any kind of firing,” he said.

“Now, the students’ duty is to stay calm and help us.”

Hasina had ruled Bangladesh since 2009 and was elected for a fourth consecutive term in a January vote that was boycotted by her main opponents, sparking concerns over how free and fair the election was.

She was forced out by weeks of protests that started peacefully but turned into deadly clashes with security forces, leading to a communications blackout, curfews, and around 300 deaths.

Students were the ones leading earlier protests that began in July to demand reforms to a quota system for government jobs, which the Supreme Court eventually scaled back. But as the rallies turned deadly and authorities attempted to quell the violence with force, the movement escalated into a campaign to oust Hasina.

At least 11,000 people have been arrested in recent weeks, with the unrest leading to closure of schools and universities across the South Asian nation and authorities issuing a shoot-on-sight curfew at one point.

Student activists called for a march to Dhaka on Monday in defiance of the latest curfew to press for Hasina’s resignation. This comes after nearly 100 people, including over a dozen police officers, were killed the day before following a fresh wave of deadly clashes across the country.

After the military confirmed Hasina’s resignation, thousands of people poured onto the capital’s streets in jubilation. Television visuals showed masses storming Hasina’s official residence in the capital, pumping fists, making victory signs, and removing furniture and other household items.

Hasina, 76, was one of the world’s longest ruling female leaders and has played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s politics, a nation of about 170 million people that declared its independence in 1971.

She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s charismatic founding leader, who was killed in 1975 in a military coup when Hasina was 28. She served as prime minister from 1996 to 2001 and regained power in 2009.

Under her leadership, Bangladesh became one of the fastest-growing economies in the region, with World Bank estimates showing that more than 25 million people in the country have been lifted out of poverty in the last two decades.

But critics say she has grown increasingly autocratic and called her a threat to the country’s democracy, with many saying that the recent unrest reflected a broader discontent against her rule.

“Bengalis have witnessed the second revolution in its history of 52 years since independence,” Prof. A.S.M. Amanullah, a professor of sociology at Dhaka University, told the media.

Amanullah said the students had demanded “total reform” of the country, and said all of the nation’s institutions were corrupt, with the government of the last 15 years to blame.

“It is the people’s power. It is a voice to the rest of the world. It is a voice to the rest of the Indian subcontinent,” Amanullah said.

“If you work against your people, whatever you may be, whoever you may be, you cannot sustain in the long run.”

Iran Says Doesn’t Want Regional Escalation But Must ‘Punish’ Israel

0

Iran is not looking to escalate regional tensions but believes it needs to punish Israel to prevent further instability, the foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday, following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.

“Iran seeks to establish stability in the region, but this will only come with punishing the aggressor and creating deterrence against the adventurism of the Zionist regime (Israel),” Nasser Kanaani said, adding that action from Tehran was inevitable.

Kanaani called on the United States to stop supporting Israel, saying the international community had failed in its duty to safeguard stability in the region and should support the “punishment of the aggressor.”

The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ top Commander Hossein Salami on Monday reiterated the elite group’s threat that Israel “will receive punishment in due time.”

Tehran and Iran-aligned groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah have accused Israel of killing Haniyeh on July 31.

Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility.

Tunisia President Kais Saied Registers Election Candidacy

0

Tunisian President Kais Saied, who seized wide-ranging powers two years after his 2019 election, on Monday submitted his official candidacy for the country’s upcoming presidential election on October 6.

Saied, 66, told reporters in the capital Tunis that his candidacy was part of “a liberation and self-determination war” set to “establish a new republic.”

Experts say Saied’s challengers face significant constraints in their bid to run for office, while several would-be hopefuls are either in prison or being prosecuted.

But Saied on Monday denied that his government was repressing critical voices, saying that “whoever talks about restrictions is delusional.”

“I did not oppress anyone, and the law applies to everyone equally,” he said. “I am here as a citizen to run for office.”

“We will not accept any foreign party interfering in the choices of our people,” he added.

Saied’s submission came just two days after that of Abir Moussi, a vocal critic of Saied who has been in jail since October.

Other jailed hopefuls include Issam Chebbi, leader of centrist party Al Joumhouri, and Ghazi Chaouchi, head of the social-democratic party Democratic Current, both held for “plotting against the state.”

The two politicians are among more than 20 of Saied’s opponents detained since a flurry of arrests in February 2023.

Last week, four women working on the presidential campaign of rapper turned businessman Karim Gharbi, better known by his stage name K2Rhym, were given jail time for allegedly buying signatures of endorsement.

Three staffers on media personality Nizar Chaari’s campaign have been detained on similar suspicions, which the candidate has categorically denied.

A group of about 30 NGOs denounced on Thursday the “arbitrary detention” of candidates, an electoral authority which has “lost its independence” and “the monopolization of the public space” to bolster Saied’s re-election bid.

“We are in a war of liberation and we don’t want to restrict anyone’s freedoms,” the president said on Monday. “I did not interfere with the judiciary.”

To be listed on the ballot, candidates are required to present a list of signatures from 10,000 registered voters, with at least 500 voter signatures per constituency.

Saied said he collected over 240,000 signatures.

Senior Russian Official In Tehran To Deepen Security Ties

0

Russia’s national Security Council secretary on Monday arrived for a visit to Tehran, news agencies reported, amid fears of a wider war in the region following last week’s killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran.

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s ex-defense minister, was set to meet senior military and security officials as well as new President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in a wide range of spheres including security, Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The visit was on the invitation of his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Iran’s local Tasnim news agency reported.

It said the visit had the aim of “strengthening interactions, the examination of regional and international issues, and bilateral political security relations.”

Russia has “strongly condemned” the killing of Haniyeh, the political leader of the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas, in Tehran last month.

Pezeshkian has described Russia as a “valued strategic ally.”

Shoigu was removed as defense minister in May in a major shake-up of Russia’s military leadership, becoming secretary of the Security Council instead.

The visit to one of Russia’s key political allies underlines Shoigu’s continued significant role.

As defense minister, he visited Iran in September last year, while his predecessor at the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, a longstanding ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, visited in late 2022.
