Youth Secretariat: Fct Youth Stakeholders Give Reason For Delay In Recommendation

0

The indigenous youths of Abuja under the auspices of FCT Youth Stakeholders Forum have said that the delay in the nomination of a candidate for the position of mandate secretary of the newly established youth secretariat was the need to give the best of the best.

“Someone who has track records of being an advocate of youth development in the last 25 years, experienced in youth empowerment and most especially someone who must be satisfied with by all the six area council chairmen.”

The founder of the group, Commandant Isaac David said this in a statement made available to newsmen, that the delay was just a move strategically aimed at nominating a personality who has worked for the development and empowerment of youth across the 858 communities in FCT for the past three decades, who has the ability to build and strengthening the already established structures on youth affairs and governance of youth  stakeholders in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Isaac added that, “the perceived delay is a deliberate one on stakeholders’ part to choose the most suitable candidate for the youth mandate secretariat, not only that to ensure that all the six area council chairmen have input on whoever we are presenting as mandate secretary.

The group noted that the delay was very necessary because the recent incident of protest in the country has shown that the secretariat have a crucial and pivotal role to play in shaping policies and programmes that would address the needs and aspirations of the youth in the FCT.

Isaac who doubled as ex-FCT Minister’s special assistant on youth matters reiterated that the ongoing process of nomination was the one all FCT stakeholders do not want to make in a hurry to avert mistakes of choosing a leader who does not represent  the will of the people because FCT have its own peculiarities most especially on the youth affairs, “therefore there must be a very careful, conscious and calculated steps to be taken in arriving at a particular conclusion that they (Ministers) would never regret, so, we want our Honourable Ministers to understand this given what Mr. President also went through before giving us these workaholics and talk and do Ministers in FCT.”

He continued that the  experience of the past was also a factor thereby all different stakeholders from various sectors, including government officials, community leaders, and youth representatives are giving a platform to meticulously review candidates’ trajectory, qualifications, experience, and vision in the last 25 years.

Isaac therefore implored the Ministers to exercise little patience for the people of the FCT to bring up candidate who was well-equipped to drive the secretariat’s objectives and contribute to the broader goals of youth empowerment in FCT.

“The stakeholders are still consulting and they have not made any recommendations. Therefore, this was necessary for the Ministers not to cheaply fall for the antics of gatecrashers who always want to take chances in any opportunity.”

Meanwhile, Isaac was quick to add that among the characteristics the ministers should employ in choosing after recommendations was to check for those who have been in the struggle using their hard-earned resources for the emancipation of the youth in FCT not those opportunity grappers who are masquerading as youth advocates within government circle.

“This should also serve as warning that we are not going to accept any body whose records fall below the requirements even if the person was supported by the area council chairmen”, Isaac advised

ICC’s Bi-annual Review Of Darfur Crimes Delivered To UN Council

0

Monday, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Karim Khan addressed the United Nations Security Council in New York to deliver his bi-annual report on Darfur.

While the Council referred the matter to the ICC in 2005, the main focus has been on crimes that took place after April 2023.

Karim Khan remarked, “To those on the ground today in Darfur, I am addressing both the Sudanese armed forces and the rapid support forces, to those that are aiding and abetting them, that are encouraging them, that are funding them, that are supplying them with weapons, that are giving orders, that are gaining certain advantages, I want to be crystal clear that we are investigating.”

The prosecutor previously mentioned the ongoing crimes in North Darfur and the regional capital of El Fasher.

Karim Khan expressed confidence and optimism that his next report will include a request for arrest warrants for several key individuals involved in the ongoing situation.

“We’re using our resources as effectively as we can to make sure that the events also since April of last year, are subjected to the principles of international humanitarian law,” he concluded.

Karim Khan also sought the cooperation of the Rapid Support Forces, RSF, led by General Hemedti.

He condemned the financial and political support for the militias and the inaction of the international community.

Beyond the civil war in Sudan, the prosecutor highlighted the cases of former president Omar al-Bashir, who has never been handed over, and former minister Ahmed Harun, who reportedly moves freely.

The prosecutor called for Sudan’s cooperation in their arrest. Since 2005, only one trial against a Janjaweed leader has taken place in The Hague.

Ukraine Denies Involvement In Mali Attack, Says Cutting Ties ‘Short-sighted’

0

Ukraine on Monday August 5 criticized Mali’s decision to sever diplomatic ties, calling it short-sighted and hasty. Kyiv stated that no evidence had been provided to implicate Ukraine in the fighting that resulted in the deaths of Malian soldiers and Russian mercenaries last month.

The West African nation announced on Sunday it was immediately ending relations with Ukraine following comments from Ukraine’s military spy agency regarding the late July clashes in northern Mali.

Tuareg rebels claimed responsibility for the incident, reporting they had killed at least 84 Russian Wagner mercenaries and 47 Malian soldiers. This incident appears to be Wagner’s most significant defeat since they began assisting Mali’s military authorities against insurgent groups two years ago.

“It is regrettable that Mali decided to sever relations without thoroughly examining the facts and circumstances of the incident and without providing any evidence of Ukraine’s involvement,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry stated.

Following the clashes, Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military spy agency, mentioned on television that Malian rebels had received the “necessary” information to carry out the attack.

Ukraine, which has been fending off Russian troops for over 29 months since Russia’s full-scale invasion, did not confirm its involvement in the incident in its statement.

Mali expressed “deep shock” over the “subversive remarks,” interpreting them as an admission of involvement. Mali condemned these actions as violations of its sovereignty and equated them to supporting international terrorism.

Over the weekend, Senegalese authorities summoned Ukraine’s ambassador, Yurii Pyvovarov, accusing him of supporting the attack in a since-deleted video posted on the Ukrainian embassy’s Facebook account.

The accusations against Kyiv come at a time of fraying relations between the West and coup-affected Sahel nations. Following military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in recent years, the juntas have expelled French and U.S forces and turned to Russia’s mercenary units for security assistance.

Sanwo-Olu, Uzodinma Lead Project, As FG Moves To Revamp Textile Industries

By Uche Onyeali

Federal government has disclosed plans to revamp textile industries to leverage its potential on job creation.

The move was consolidated at a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors of Lagos and Imo States, Jide Sanwo-Olu and Hope Uzodinma respectively, as well as stakeholders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, yesterday.

AljazirahNigeria reports that the meeting was aimed at drawing ideas on how best to go about revamping the moribund textile industries.

Speaking after the meeting, Governor Uzodinma stressed the importance of those in the helm of affairs to do everything within their power to stimulate the economy, hence the buy-in of governors to the project.

“Like the United Nations Cotton Manufacturing, the entire production chain of cotton is up to 10 sides and the whole idea is to leverage on this opportunity to revamp the industries in Nigeria, which many are now moribond, particularly in the cotton and textile sector.

“This is an opportunity that is creating a new partnership for us to cross pollinate ideas with experts, bring new skills, new ideas and innovations into revamping the industries in Nigeria, and that will create jobs and engage our young men and women that are currently roaming the streets.

“So for me, I am very excited to be part of this conversation that will revamp the economy of the country. It is a new partnership that we will leverage on.

“Before this time, you will agree with me, in Lagos State, Isolo area to be precise, there were many textile industries. Kaduna was famous as a centre for cotton production and textile mills. In the north, the land was very fertile for growing cotton and then processing it. So I think we need to stimulate the economy. We need to create more jobs, we need to redefine Nigeria. We need to engage our young men and women and then align properly with the new digital age for production and economic stimulation,” he said.

On his part, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged Nigerians to patronise made-in- Nigeria textiles because of the impact it would have on the economy.

He said the textile industries have the potential of engaging over 15 to 20 million Nigerians.

“If we are growing cotton, are we ready to patronise the ones we are producing locally? Because that is one issue the textile manufacturers raised, that when they manufacture fabrics many persons prefer the ones from Italy?

“So I think the explanation has been made. Part of the things that you see with our garment manufacturer, is actually polyester, not cotton. And polyester happens to be cheaper than cotton. You know, cotton is a higher grade to sew as against using polyester.

“So really, we need to look at the entire value chain. There are so many things that we can track in this country and that is why we say to ourselves, let us produce what we use. Let us use what we produce.

“Let’s go back to our garment, cotton edges. The statistics shows that it was employing directly and indirectly, almost 15 to 18 million Nigerians, in that entire value chain. If you can bring back that, even if it is five million in the next one to two years, it will take us further away from poverty.

“We have seen the institute, which is, like they said, like the United Nations, equivalent of the cotton industry in the world, coming here to support, to help us. Mr Vice President has given us a marching order and a commitment, which I think is a great news that everybody must take away from here and he has given them a roadmap for us to go and work with them,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

BY ANTHONY OCHELA, ABUJA

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has fixed November 26 for the trial of the chief executives of Telecom Satellites Limited, TSTV, on charges of advanced fee fraud, money laundering and tax evasion brought against them by the federal government.

The TSTV executives are Dr Bright Echefu, who is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, and Dr Felix Igboanugo, Executive Director of the telecom satellites company.

Justice Ekwo was said to be out of Abuja on official engagement on July 15 when their trial was to begin by the Economic and Finance Crimes Commission, EFCC, on behalf of the federal government.

The registrar of the court had told lawyers, defendants and other litigants that a date for the trial would be communicated to them by the judge upon his return to Abuja.

However, Justice Ekwo in a notice of trial date communicated to the two defendants, said November 26 had been scheduled for the EFCC to open the case against them.

The November date was said to have been picked by the judge, following the yearly vacation of the court that will end in October.

The TSTV executives were put on trial alongside TSTV and another company, Briechberg Investment Limited by the EFCC on nine-count criminal charges.

Part of the charges are that the two men on May 18, 2020, committed money laundering, tax evasion, unremitted VAT, Company Income Tax and Pay-As-You-Earn, PAYE, deducted from the salaries of 165 workers.

The prosecution said the offences were punishable under Section 15 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011, as amended in 2012.

They were alleged to have on May 18, 2020, diverted to their personal use, N33.9 million, N13.5 million and N19.4 million tax payable to the federal government, in breach of Section 15 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act.

Specifically, Dr Echefu, who is the first defendant, was alleged to have defrauded a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Turaki Tanimu, of N960 million under false pretences.

The charge indicated that Echefu, while acting as the managing director of Briechberg Investment Limited, on May 18, 2020, with intent to defraud obtained N150 million from Tanimu, who is the managing director of Kalsiyam Farm, as loan to acquire modern equipment for his telecom company.

The money was said to have been paid into Briechberg Investment Limited account number 1015561485 domiciled at Zenith Bank.

On the same day, the defendant was said to have obtained another N380 million paid into the same account for the same purpose, while another N400 million was also allegedly secured by the accused the same day and for the same purpose from Tanimu, who is also the MD of BYI General, and paid into the same account.

On the same May 18, 2020, Tanimu, while acting as managing director of K.T Turaki, made two payments of N15 million each into Briechberg Investment Limited bank account belonging to Dr Echefu for the same purpose.

Meanwhile, the defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.

Sylvanus Tahir (SAN) is prosecuting the case for the federal government, while Eyitayo Fatigun (SAN) is the defence counsel.

Tinubu’s Loyalist, Onokpasa, Dismisses ‘Fake Post’ On Bello, El-Rufai

0

By Blessing Otobong-Gabriel

Member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Jesutega Onokpasa said a former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir el-Rufai would have calmed the violent demonstration in the northern part of the country if they were not being persecuted and inundated with unsubstantiated charges.

Onokpasa said the former governors, in their characteristic manner, would have taken up the task of speaking up for President Bola Tinubu, calmed frayed nerves and ensure that peace reigns in the region.

The APC chieftain made this known in a video clip while lambasting appointees of President Tinubu who are from the north for failing to take any action in defending his government and ensuring sanity among participants of the nationwide protest.

According to the lawyer, many appointees of President Tinubu, especially those from the north, do not really love him and neither do they support his government

He added that all they did was to paint Bello and el-Rufai black by cooking up unfounded rumour that the former governors and the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, were sponsoring the nationwide protest and that they were behind the display of Russian flags by some northern protesters.

Dismissing the allegations by one Jackson Ude that the former governors, conniving with Matawalle and the Chief Personal Security Officer to President Tinubu, were behind calls for military coup by the protesters, Onokpasa expressed disappointment that some idle appointees of Tinubu and APC loyalists had been parroting the rumour even when they were supposed to be synergising on how to restore normalcy in the country in the wake of the nationwide protest.

He chieftain described Bello and el-Rufai as true BATists who contributed immensely to the emergence of President Tinubu, maintaining that if the duo were not encumbered with politically motivated issues, they would have risen to the violent demonstration in the north, restored calm and assured them of the good intentions of President Tinubu.

Calling on APC supporters and appointees of the Federal Government to maintain caution over unfounded speculations and hearsays that might further divide the ruling party, Onokpasa stressed that Bello, El-Rufai, Matawalle and others mentioned in the alleged plot against Tinubu were known strong supporters of Tinubu who assiduously supported him to electoral victory and still work for his success.

“Those of you in our party listening to this ‘dem say, dem say crap’ saying our brothers (Yahaya Bello and Nasir El-Rufai) are planning against Asiwaju. The people that Jackson Udeh mentioned – Yahaya Bello, Nasir el-Rufai, Bello Matawalle – these are the people that were very very close to former President Muhammadu Buhari. They were the three people that sued him (Buhari) over naira scarcity and redesign that Emefiele did to make us lose election. They are the ones who sued (Buhari) in support of President Tinubu. They were critical to us winning election.

“Then, an Obedient mentions them, without no evidence, he says they are responsible (for nationwide protest), Yahaya Bello of all people, Nasir el-Rufai. These idiots are trying to divide us and some of us Batists, some of us APC supporters, some of us in Asiwaju government are so stupid, so idiotic as to allow them to divide us. We are falling apart like this. How many of us are there? How many of us won this election? We won election not because we are spectacular, we won election because God wanted Asiwaju to be President. We won by the lowest margin since 1999. I am a Catholic and it is so clear to me that God made Asiwaju President despite all the odds and these people (Bello, El-Rufai, Matawalle) they are mentioning were crucial in us winning that election,” he said.

Onokpasa warned against pull-him-down down syndrome in APC, lamenting that the party was gradually falling apart. He called on all genuine Batists and supporters of APC to desist from persecuting and painting Yahaya Bello and Nasir el-Rufai bad, saying no amount of their evil ploys against the duo would take away their huge commitments in the presidency of Tinubu.

He also knocked some appointees of President Tinubu who had been silent on the nationwide protest, especially in the north, saying, “Those we have in critical appointments in government, what have they been saying? Have you heard from them? I am asking you my fellow APC members. How they even got across to a notorious Obedient like Jackson Ude, an anti-Tinubu character like that, in the midst of this nationwide protest when we should be synergizing and support our President, we are further tearing ourselves apart?

“Yahaya Bello and El-Rufai did not see anything to do, it is to be sharing flags? Shame on all of you, crazy people in this party. May God uproot all of you from our midst; you are not Batists; you are not Progressives, you don’t love Asiwaju, you don’t love President Tinubu. God will remove you. God will separate all of you from our President.”
