Presidential Aide, Onanuga Faults Atiku’s Warning To Security Agencies

0

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga has faulted former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s statement warning security agencies against using lethal force against looters and arsonists.

Onanuga, in a statement on Tuesday, said that Atiku’s tweeted message was absurd.

Atiku had warned security agencies against using lethal force against looters and arsonists who masqueraded as protesters.

He said as a statesman, Atiku’s warning ought to be to the looting mob in Kaduna, Kano, Plateau and Jigawa states, who hijacked what was advertised by organisers as a peaceful protest.

He said the security forces had remained professional, even-handed, and observed every restraint in the face of extreme provocation by the rioters.

‘We are surprised that Alhaji Atiku is still relying on Section 40 of our constitution (as amended) to justify a protest that is now clearly a riot, a rampage in some parts of the country.

‘Section 45 of the constitution says the right of assembly and the right of freedom of expression are not absolute.

‘They can be abridged and fettered in the interest of public peace, public safety, law, and order,’ said the Presidential aide.

He said the Service Chiefs reiterated the rights of Nigerians to protest and gather freely.

‘They, however, reinforced their constitutional duty, today, when they said they cannot sit by idly and watch hoodlums destroy the country and its democracy.

‘The Service Chiefs and the officers and men of our security outfits should be commended for their patriotic duty to our country.

‘As a supporter and enabler of the destructive ‘protests,’ Alhaji Atiku certainly wants the sinister protest to continue in spite of the red signals from the streets”, said Onanuga.

He said a tweet that condoned the destruction of private and public property and investments of citizens was unbecoming of a former vice-president.

He said Atiku ought to have risen above the sentiment he expressed and put the country’s stability ahead of whatever advantages he

hoped to reap from the insurrection on the streets.

‘We encourage Alhaji Atiku to borrow a leaf from opposition figures in United Kingdom, who have rallied behind the government to condemn the ongoing riots in UK.

‘They called for the arrest and prosecution of those behind the wanton destruction of public and private assets.

“Such nationalistic temperament as displayed by opposition figures like Rishi Sunak, the immediate-past Prime Minister of UK is expected of Alhaji Atiku”, said Onanuga.

Obasanjo To FG: Listen To Youths’ Concerns

0

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the Federal Government to listen to the concerns of the youths which necessitated their nationwide protests.

Obasanjo, who spoke while playing host to six members of the National Assembly yesterday in Abeokuta, said what the youths were seeking through their nationwide protests was legitimate.

He said their could be dire consequences if their demands were not met as soon as possible.

NAN reports that the six legislators are co-sponsors of a bill seeking a single six-year term for presidency and rotation between the North and the South.

The former President urged the Federal Government to listen to the youth and not treat their concerns with levity.

“You are what you are today because you’re a Nigerian; I’m what I am also because I’m a Nigerian. So, why should they be Nigerians and be languishing in poverty?

“They make demands and we’re not listening to them. Many of them are frustrated, desperate, angry and unemployed. What do we expect”, he queried.

Obasanjo noted that for Nigeria to attain its highest status, all hands must be on deck, just as “Our mentality should also change”.

According to him, the issue is not whether the country should adopt a single six-year term or maintain status quo. If the mentality of the people in governance does not change, then Nigeria will remain where it is.

“For me, the issue is for us to get it right. Whether we have one term of six years or two terms of four years; where it’ll work is our mentality.

“We have to decarbonise our brain. If you give a person one single term of six years, he will do the same harm he could have done in two terms of four years.

“If you have a system you can trust; you have an INEC you can trust, then it will not matter the number of years”, Obasanjo said.

Speaking earlier, Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere, who led five other lawmakers, said that the country should move toward adopting a single six-year term for president

Ugochinyere said that there should be a rotational mechanism for governance between the North and the South, just as state governments too should rotate governance among the three senatorial districts.

He called for a rejig of the nation’s laws to accommodate these changes.

Other lawmakers, who accompanied Ugochinyere on the visit were Abdulmalik Danga (Kogi), Midala Malami (Borno), Matthew Nwogu (Imo), Peter Aniekwe (Anambra) and Kama Nkemkama (Ebonyi).

Good Governance: The Need For Nigerian Govt To Take Strategic Communications Seriously

0

Good governance is fundamental for the prosperity of every nation, and this principle extends to the corporate sphere, where ‘Corporate Governance’ holds significant importance. Effective governance practices ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making, which are essential for sustainable growth and success in both public and private sectors.

In the corporate world, adhering to sound principles of corporate governance helps in fostering investor confidence, mitigating risks, and enhancing overall performance. By upholding the principles of good governance, organizations can build trust with stakeholders, maintain a competitive edge, and contribute to long-term success and sustainability.

The call for good governance has been put on the front burner in Nigeria with the hunger protest by citizens tagged #EndBadGovernance. Although the protest turned bloody in some parts of the country, resulting in the looting of supermarkets and shops and vandal of public facilities, it has shown the disconnection between the government and the citizens. The violent turn of events highlights the deep-seated frustrations and grievances of the people towards the authorities. It serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and responsiveness from the government to address the issues that have led to such drastic actions by the populace. The unrest underscores the critical importance of heeding the calls for reform and ensuring that the concerns of the citizens are heard and addressed to prevent further escalation of tensions.

Sadly, the situation has further dirtied the reputation of the country among the League of Nations. However, after several calls by citizens, President Bola Tinubu had to address the nation calling for calm and understanding and urging citizens to end the protest. In his address, he reeled out some of the initiatives his administration is doing to stabilize the economy and reduce hunger, poverty, and others. As commendable as this is, it shows how the government has not been proactive and not even deliberate about strategically communicating with the citizens and stakeholders. Successive governments have also followed this path; they wait until there is an outburst from the citizens before they address the nation. Then they start reeling out the interventions they are doing and how citizens can access them.

This is not just peculiar to the federal government and its agencies, states, and local government; the other organs of government are not left out. They claim to disburse huge amounts of funds for citizens, but the expected beneficiaries are not aware of it. The effort is like ‘winking in the dark’ and it has always been counterproductive for the country.

Citizens don’t trust the government and the government doesn’t engage citizens appropriately. Town hall meetings met to boost the government-citizen relationship have become a gathering of politicians.

Government spokespersons are commonly seen as the mouthpieces of the political party in power who mostly blame the opposition for campaign promises not yet filled instead of clearly communicating their policies and programmes.

This present government won on the mantra of ‘Renewed Hope’ but after the election, it has failed to deliberately leverage strategic communications to engage citizens and stakeholders to reposition the country.

Why is strategic communications important for Nigeria? Strategic communications is about communicating the best message, through the correct channels, to the right people, at the right time and using feedback from this process to stay focused on set goals. Conflict, insecurity, and other challenges facing the country will reduce when the government becomes more transparent and deliberate about communicating to the citizens and not just political party members.

The government also needs to understand that if they don’t listen to citizens and communicate on time, false news or negative perceptions may dominate the public agenda. Listening and responding on time help build trust. This is similar to how corporate organizations operate; if they don’t treat the feedback, they get from their customers timely and appropriately it will have a negative impact on their reputation and sales.

In essence, good communication is essential for good governance to be attained. The World Bank in a blog post once said, “When trust in governments around the world is at a historic low, and a myriad of challenges continue to overwhelm leaders, it’s imperative for government agencies to revamp their strategic communications approach.”

It is important to state how a country projects or positions itself will give hope to the people and attract potential investors. Reputation is very important and most developed economies have strategically protected their reputation and positioned their country as a tourist destination or manufacturing hub. An example of this is Dubai which is generating massive revenue and investment from tourism and China which is making a huge impact in manufacturing.

Citizens expect the government to fulfill its promises, show care and concern, listen to their needs, and communicate effectively with them. In return, citizens are willing to support government initiatives and policies, which ultimately contribute to securing the future of the country. This symbiotic relationship between citizens and the government is essential for a thriving and stable society where both parties work together towards common goals and shared prosperity. By fostering trust, understanding, and collaboration, governments can better address the needs of their citizens, leading to a more harmonious and successful nation.

In essence, for an effective government, it is crucial to stay informed about the news and public sentiment, actively listen to the concerns of citizens, develop well-informed policies and strategies, maintain transparency, accountability, fairness, and responsibility in decision-making processes, and take a proactive approach in engaging with citizens and key stakeholders through strategic communication. This ensures that the government remains connected, responsive, and aligned with the needs and expectations of the public, fostering a relationship of trust and collaboration that is essential for good governance and effective policymaking.

US Jury Delivers Verdict In Manuel Chang’s Corruption Trial

0

Former finance minister of Mozambique, Manuel Chang, has been convicted on U.S. charges for his involvement in a $2 billion bond fraud that caused a financial crisis in his country.

Chang was charged with accepting bribes to covertly bind his African nation to large loans focused on tuna fishing and various maritime projects.

Prosecutors allege that bribes and kickbacks resulted in the exploitation of loans, leaving the country with $2 billion in “hidden debt” and igniting a financial crisis.

Chang, who was the leading financial official in his country from 2005 to 2015, has pleaded not guilty to the conspiracy charges.

His attorneys argue that he was merely executing his government’s wishes when he approved the loan repayment agreements for Mozambique, and they maintain that there is no evidence of any financial gain for him.

Prosecutors alleged that Chang received $7 million in bribes, which were transferred via U.S. banks to European accounts owned by a colleague.

A federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, reached a guilty verdict on Thursday for Chang on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, both of which could lead to a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Chang denied wrongdoing, with his attorney stating that his client was only fulfilling his duties to help the southern African country obtain loans to carry out public infrastructure works.

Between 2013 and 2016, three companies managed by the Mozambican government quietly obtained $2 billion in loans from major foreign banks.

Chang signed off on guarantees that the government would repay these loans, which were vital for reassuring lenders who might have been reluctant to work with these newly formed companies.

The income was planned to be used for developing a tuna fleet, constructing a shipyard, and procuring Coast Guard vessels and radar systems to defend the natural gas fields located off the country’s Indian Ocean shore.

U.S. prosecutors claimed that the loan funds were pilfered by bankers and government officials for their own financial benefit.

In 2016, the public discovered that Mozambique had incurred a $2 billion debt, which represented around 12% of its gross domestic product at that time.

This revelation shocked a nation that the World Bank had recognised as one of the world’s 10 fastest-growing economies for the previous twenty years, leading to a sudden financial crisis.

U.N. Counterterrorism Chief Sounds Alarm On ISIS In Africa

0

Islamic State extremist group is escalating its threat level amid the political unrest in West Africa and the Sahel, and it remains focused on conducting attacks abroad.

A senior U.N. counterterrorism official informed the Security Council on Thursday that a large area of Africa might come under the influence of the Islamic State and related terrorist groups.

In a regular briefing to the council, Vladimir Voronkov, the undersecretary for counterterrorism, reported that affiliates of the IS group have expanded and reinforced their operational zones in West Africa and the Sahel.

He indicated that “The terrorism landscape in West Africa and the Sahel remains challenging and complex. Terrorist groups continue to expand in the Sahel and inflict high casualties, undermining regional stability.”

Voronkov stated that two Daesh affiliates in the area, the Islamic State West Africa Province and the Islamic State in the greater Sahel, have broadened and strengthened their operational territories.

If these groups increase their influence in the northern states, they could effectively control land from Mali to northern Nigeria.

Voronkov also mentioned that IS group affiliates have expanded their operations in various parts of the continent, including Mozambique, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Congolese Court Sentences Rebel Leader, 25 Others To Death

0

Military court in Congo on Thursday sentenced 25 people, including the leader of a rebel coalition, to death after a high-profile televised trial that started late last month.

Corneille Nangaa, leader of the Alliance Fleuve Congo, or AFC, was found guilty of war crimes, participation in an insurrection and treason. Naanga and 19 other defendants sentenced to death were absent from the trial as they are currently on the run.

“This nauseating judicial saga reinforces our struggle for democratic normality in Congo,” Nangaa told the Associated Press in a text message from an undisclosed location.

The AFC is a political-military movement launched by Nangaa in December with the aim of uniting armed groups, political parties and civil society against Congo’s government. One of its most renown members is the M23, an armed group accused of mass killings in eastern Congo’s decadeslong conflict.

Congo’s president Felix Tshisekedi, along with U.S. and U.N. experts, accuse neighboring Rwanda of giving military backing to M23. Rwanda denies the claim, but in February it effectively admitted that it has troops and missile systems in eastern Congo to safeguard its security, pointing to a buildup of Congolese forces near the border.

The court’s decision against Nangaa follows the announcement of a cease-fire between Congo and Rwanda last week following talks mediated by Angola. The cease-fire took effect on Sunday but prospects are slim with previous truces not lasting more than a few weeks and fighting having already resumed near the border with Uganda.

The death sentence against Nangaa might be a way to have more leverage in possible future negotiations with Rwanda or the armed groups themselves, Yvon Muya, a conflict studies researcher at Saint Paul University, said.

The decades long conflict in eastern Congo has produced one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 100 armed groups fighting in the region, most for land and control of mines with valuable minerals. Some are fighting to try to protect their communities.

Many groups are accused of carrying out mass killings, rapes and other human rights violations.

The violence has displaced about 7 million people, including thousands living in temporary camps. Many others are beyond the reach of aid.

Coalition Demands Release of Protesters, Asks Tinubu To End Economic Hardship

0

By MBACHU GODWIN, Abuja

Coalition of Civil Society groups under the aegis of Coalition For Democratic Accountability and Electoral Reforms, (CODER) has urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately address the economic Hardship being witnessed in the country.

The Coalition also ask the Security agencies to immediately release all Protesters arrested during the August 1st to 10th End Bad Governance and hardship Protest unconditionally

Addressing a press Conference in Abuja, Convener and spokesperson of the Coalition, High Chief, Peter Ameh said the hardship Protest will continue until the president meets the demands of Nigerians.

Ameh said “Our nation is in crisis. The Nigerian people have been plunged into deeper poverty and hardship. Subsistence living has vanished, leaving many families in distress. Parents struggle to put food on the table, and some are forced to make stew with cucumbers because basic vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and onions are too expensive. Farmers live in fear of bandits and kidnappers, preventing them from cultivating their lands, which contributes to the food scarcity we face. The economic turmoil has led to unpaid school fees, and as of 2024, UNICEF has declared Nigeria as having the world’s highest number of out-of-school children. This is an urgent situation that demands immediate attention.”

On the arrest of Protesters by security agencies , he said ,
“We have witnessed tragic events, such as the killing of Abbas Kabiru by the Nigerian Police in Kaduna and the death of 16-year-old Ismail Mohammed at the hands of the Nigerian Army. These are only a few examples of the violence that peaceful protesters have endured, with Amnesty International stating over 22 peaceful protesters brutally killed by the security agencies.

The 1999 Constitution, as amended, clearly protects our inalienable rights, including the right to protest. According to the constitution, no one should be held without being charged to court for more than 48 hours. Yet, individuals like Alhaji Khalid Aminu remain in detention without charges, languishing in SSS custody in Kaduna. This is unacceptable!

The demands of Nigerians who have gathered peacefully since August 1, 2024, must be heard. We seek relief from the economic hardships inflicted upon us by the irrational policies of the President Tinubu led government. The use of live ammunition against peaceful protesters is intolerable and must end immediately.

“We also declare that the harassment and intimidation of journalists who are bonafide members of the fourth estate of the realm from covering the protest is a breach of the constitution and other relevant international laws. This should stop immediately.
Our protests are not a stage for criminal activities. To those who see our peaceful protest as a means to put their criminal activities into practise, you are not a part of our cause.

We call on President Tinubu to immediately halt the use of brute force by security agencies against peaceful protesters. There is no place for the use of live ammunition on peaceful protesters.

“Nigerians have the right to protest, and our demands are essential for the nation’s progress and stability. We urge the federal government to take immediate action to address these issues. We are aware of the government’s tactics of bribing key stakeholders to quash protests, but this time, it will not succeed. If our demands are not met, we will continue to peacefully express our sufferings and frustrations until they are addressed.
Nigerians will not give up until their demands are met”.

Israel Vows To Fight ‘Aggression’ From Hezbollah ‘With All Its Might’

0

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Thursday that Israel would fight Hezbollah “with all its might” if the Lebanese armed group continued its “aggression” across the border.

“We will not allow the Hezbollah militia to destabilize the border and the region. If Hezbollah continues its aggression, Israel will fight it, with all its might,” Gallant said in a message addressed to the people of Lebanon, according to a statement from his office.

Hezbollah has traded near-daily fire with Israeli forces in support of ally Hamas since the Palestinian militant group’s October 7 attack on Israel triggered war in Gaza.

Fears of all-out war have mounted after Israel killed Hezbollah’s top military commander Fuad Shukr in an air strike in a Beirut suburb last week.

Reminding the people of Lebanon of the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, Gallant warned Lebanon to “learn the lesson of the past so as not to fall into a dangerous scenario in August 2024.”

The devastating 34-day war in July-August 2006 killed more than 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and some 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
