Ohanaeze To Critics: Northern States Primary Beneficiaries Of Tinubu’s Road Projects

0

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said states in the northern part of Nigeria are significant beneficiaries of the President Bola Tinubu’s road projects nationwide.

In response to Muhammad Jamil’s (Jadda Garko) claims that the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, is guilty of inequity in allocating road and bridge projects, Ohanaeze said the assertion contradicts what is on the ground.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo said the insinuations of lop-sidedness in the execution of road projects are not only baseless but also part of a broader effort by specific opposition figures to create discord and distract the Minister from his critical responsibilities.

H said, “In a concerted effort to uphold the integrity of the ongoing infrastructural initiatives within Nigeria, Ohanaeze Ndigbo finds it imperative to respond decisively to the unfounded allegations made by one Muhammad Jamil, also known as Jadda Garko.

“It is incumbent upon us to articulate that the Northern region is not merely a beneficiary but, indeed, the largest beneficiary of President Tinubu’s infrastructural initiatives, receiving a more significant share of road and bridge projects than the Southern region.

“Our assertion is grounded in verified empirical data, refuting the claims of disparity that dissenting parties have irresponsibly propagated. The rhetoric of inequity has no place amidst the facts illuminating the government’s commitment to equitable distribution of resources and services.

“Recent data illustrates the breadth of progress under Senator Umahi’s leadership, with 2,735 kilometres of road projects actively under construction. Of these, a substantial 1,414 kilometres, representing 52% are allocated to the Northern region, as opposed to 1,321 kilometres (48%) designated for the Southern region.

“Such discernible and quantifiable distribution is a testament to a dispassionate assessment of the nation’s infrastructural demands and priorities, favouring no region over another”.

“Moreover, we must highlight that the financing and distribution of these projects are managed through recognized and verified funding mechanisms, which include the Federal Budgetary Provisions, the Renewed Hope Infrastructural Fund, Sukuk, and the Tax Credit Scheme.

“On Sukuk-funded projects: Out of 82 ongoing projects, the Northern region has been granted 45, while the Southern region has 37. On emergency road projects: Among the 260 emergency projects, 108 are situated in the Southern region, contrasting with 98 in the Northern region.

“On the road tax credit scheme, the distribution further confirms 23 projects for the Northern region versus 21 for the South”.

He said the transparency and accountability instituted by Umahi within the Ministry of Works cannot be overstated.

Isiguzoro asserted the organisation’s belief in Umahi as a diligent manager and a statesman of integrity, placing Nigerians’ collective aspirations above individual or partisan interests.

Alleged Intimidation Of Judges Hinders Fight Against Corruption – Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has identified frivolous appeals, alleged intimidation of Judges by lawyers and judgments delivered on grounds of technicalities as some of the major challenges impeding the war against corruption.

According to him, until these challenges are curtailed, they will continue to hamper the speedy adjudication of corruption cases.

Tinubu stated this yesterday while declaring open the 6th Economic and Financial Crimes Commission/National Judicial Institute Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges at the National Judicial Institute ,NJI, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the President was represented by the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima.

He, however, acknowledged that prosecution of corruption cases had improved remarkably, following the justice sector reforms in the last few years.

The President described the capacity-building workshop as a platform to collectively raise a strong voice against Nigeria’s common enemy called corruption.

Tinubu said, ” There is no gainsaying the fact that the judiciary is central to the success of the anti corruption efforts.

” The commitment, courage and patriotism of judicial officers are ingredients that make the difference in the fight against corruption.

” Though, I am aware that prosecution of corruption matters has improved in the light of the justice sector reforms in the last few years.

”We are not oblivious of some challenges that continue to impede the speedy adjudication of corruption cases.

” They include frivolous applications and appeals, meant to delay the trial, intimidation of judges by counsel, and judgment based not on the facts of cases but on technicalities”.

He said that no Nigerian was immune to corruption, a cancer which continues to deny the nation the full benefits of her God-given resources.

Tinubu urged the judiciary arm of government to ensure that the courts are equipped with the required knowledge to handle cases involving these new forms of crime.

” As an administration, we remain committed to creating the right environment for judicial officers to discharge their responsibilities.

” One of the major actions of the government within the first year of my administration was improving the welfare of judges across the board with an increase in their remuneration.

“Official accommodation is also being provided for various categories of judicial officers in highbrow areas of the Federal Capital Territory”, he stated.

The President assured his administration has, through strategic investment, recovered proceeds of corruption in critical social programmes.

He added that his administration moved to reduce the pressure on vulnerable Nigerians to resort to corrupt practices.

Tinubu commended the EFCC for its commitment in fighting all economic and financial crimes, especially in tracing and recovering stolen assets.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to support the work of the commission to ensure that it continues to deliver its statutory mandate without let or hindrance”.

Tinubu thanked the leaderships of NJI and EFCC for initiating the annual workshop for prosecutors and judicial officers.

He expressed the hope that the seminar would interrogate the challenges hampering the fight against corruption.

Proprietress of Brighter Light Private School, Kubwa, Abuja, Dr T. M Modupe has decried the decay in Nigeria’s education system.

Dr Modupe, who said the challenges bedevilling the system had always been of concern to her, noted that she had at several fora, presented documents on how to tackle the rot in the sector.

According to her, “When I was doing my Masters degree at Open University, Abuja, we did a seminar then and what I really worked on was the decay in the educational sector.

“There are things our government should really look into. In Nigeria in the past, our educational standard and curriculum were perfect, but some people are bringing in innovations by inculcating other countries’ curricula into ours,” she assorted, noting that such innovation had contributed to the derail in the nation.

Modupe disclosed that at various seminars, she had drawn government’s attention to the drift in the system.

She, however, commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, who she said had been exerting efforts to bring back the glorious days of schools in the territory.

“Now we can see that the new FCT Minister is doing a good job, by going back to our old and normal standard,” she said.

In the area of security, Dr Modupe said Brighter Light prioritises the security of its pupils and students, hence it employes well-trained security personnel who work 24 hours with the requisite gadgets, as well as fencing the premises with security cable.

On the issue of ‘special centre’ during external examinations, the educationist noted that such centres had contributed enormously to the rot in the system, as many students no longer value reading in preparation for examination.

On the growth in her school, she disclosed that the improvement in curriculum, population, teaching, as well as expansion are unprecedented.

When we opened Bright Light, our plan was to limit it to primary school, but I noticed the decay in the system, we decided to extend to secondary school. “The present generation of students have really disappointed parents.

“Imagine some parents going to examination centres to bribe invigilators with huge amount of money to help their children. It is as bad as that,” she lamented.

Agency Report

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has revealed that 84 of its members died between May and August due to economic hardship and unpaid salaries.

President of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, made the disclosure during a television programme.

He said, “In the last three months, from May to August (2024), universities lost 84 academics to death. In three months, because of what our people are going through.

“Despite this crisis, you are holding somebody’s three-and-half or more salaries citing ‘no-work, no-pay,’ you are owing this money. People are trying to survive, you introduced fuel increase, electricity increase and everything is gone now.”

The president, who demanded increased funding for university education, said to get the sector functioning optimally, lecturers must be motivated, adding that he earns N420,000 per month despite being a professor for 15 years.

According to him, Nigerian lecturers cannot compete globally if they are not well-paid.

It would be recalled that on September 25, ASUU issued the federal government a 14-day ultimatum to resolve several lingering issues including the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, as well as the release of withheld salaries due to the 2022 industrial action.

In 2022, academic and non-academic unions embarked on an eight-month strike to press home some of their demands including a better welfare package.

The administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari subsequently invoked a ‘no work, no pay policy’ against the unions, but President Bola Tinubu, in October 2023, approved the release of four of the about eight months withheld salaries.

Statistics On Violence Against Children, Alarming – FG

violent against children

Federal government, yesterday, described as alarming, the statistics on violence against children in the country.

Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba, made this known in  keynote address at the two-day stakeholders forum on ending violence against children in Nigeria in Abuja.

She decried that recent studies established that approximately six out of 10 children experience one or more forms of physical, sexual or emotional violence before the age of 18.

“These reports and data underscore the need for concerted efforts among stakeholders to intensify their commitment to protect the most vulnerable among us.

“We have to create a world where all children can thrive and be supported to reach their full potentials.

“Ending violence against children requires a multifaceted approach with concerted and intentional efforts of all stakeholders, institutions and development partners.

“Particularly those invested in developing and implementing government policies, to embark on initiatives and institutionalise mechanisms to address the scourge”.

She said by working together with a common goal, governments, organisations, communities and individuals can build a safer world for children.

“Let us use this opportunity to reinforce our commitment to end the scourge of violence against children in our communities and nation.

“We will also ensure that children who suffer from violence are given the necessary physical and mental support they require to be rehabilitated”.

She noted that one major area that requires reform is the juvenile justice system, which includes government agencies and institutions, that function to investigate, supervise, adjudicate, care for, or confine delinquent juveniles or children in contact with the law.

“Apart from addressing overcrowding in juvenile homes, delay in the legal process and inadequate resources in detention centers to cater to juveniles: there is the need for a review of laws and government policy to adopt a reformative approach for children in contact with the law.

“This is in order to address the root causes of criminal behavior in children, such as poverty, neglect and lack of education”.

The permanent secretary noted that the Childs Right Act/Laws guarantees respect for the dignity of the child and stipulates that children shall not be subjected to physical, mental or emotional abuse.

“However, it is disheartening that only a fraction of children whose rights are violated come forward to seek redress or have access to justice which will enable them seek redress.

“More disheartening is the fact that even when children report abuse, few are able to obtain effective support or rehabilitation and may suffer discrimination from their families and their communities.

“ Therefore, we must pull together institutional resources and support to ensure that children who suffer violence are able to report to competent authorities”.

She said the ministry of justice is committed to preventing and punishing violence against children.

“One of the measures we have undertaken in this regard is to designate specialised prosecutors to handle cases of violence against girls who were in Boko Haram captivity or violated by members of the group”.

She recommended that stakeholders should raise awareness about the issue and its devastating impact, strengthen child protection laws and their enforcement, and provide support services for at-risk children and families.

“We should promote positive parenting and non-violent disciplinary methods, and address root causes like poverty, inequality and lack of education, as well as empower children to speak up and seek help”.

Director of Administration of Criminal Justice and Reforms Department in the ministry, Mrs Leticia Ayoola-Daniels, said the gathering was a call to action.

“It is a collective responsibility to protect and safeguard the welfare and interest of the most vulnerable members of our society.

“It is an opportunity for us to review the progress we have made, identify the obstacles that remain on our path and draw a strategy towards surmounting the obstacles,”she said.

Child Protection Manager, UNICEF, Ms Mona Aika, in her goodwill message, commended the ministry for leading the conversation.

Aika described as alarming, a data indicating that six out of 10 children experienced physical, sexual violence before attaining 18 years, adding that“worst still, they do not receive the help they require.”

The Speaker, FCT Children Parliament, Waziri Rahama-Yarada urged all stakeholders to help stem the menace, assuring that the parliament would present a Charter of Demand before the end of the programmme.

Other keynote speakers were the President, Nigerian Association of Family Court Judges, magistrates and other practitioners, the Etsu of Kwali among others. (NAN)

Former presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, has called for strategic partnership to enhance sustainable expansion of healthcare initiatives in Nigeria.

Obi made the call yesterday in a statement after his visit to Sir Emeka Okwuosa Foundation, SEOF, and partners at Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital, DIOMH, in Anambra State.

His visit was occasioned by SEOF’s ongoing pediatric/adult open-heart surgery and bi-annual medical mission, scheduled for September 19 to October 12.

The mission is in partnership with Vincent Obioma Ohaju Memorial, VOOM, Foundation.

Obi, also a former Governor of Anambra State, commended SEOF and VOOM for their achievements in the last two years, which include 117 open-heart surgeries.

Hw said others are 10 interventional catheterisations (the first procedure in the South-East) and two vascular surgeries.

Obi expressed satisfaction with the partners’ work and charged them to continue to contribute to the development of the Nigerian healthcare sector.

He emphasised the urgent need to expand these medical endeavours to ensure that more lives are saved and better healthcare services extended to more vulnerable Nigerians.

“Sustainable collaboration between government, private sector and philanthropic organisations is critical to ensuring sustainability and expansion of healthcare initiatives to address both pediatric and adult cardiovascular needs”, he said.

Executive Director, SEOF, Mrs Chidimma Okoye, thanked Obi for the visit and for believing in the impact that the foundation is making in the lives of Nigerians.

Okoye stated that the procedures carried out at DIOMH offered critical medical interventions to children and adults who would otherwise have had no access to life-saving care.

She stated that the partnership and support they had received are instrumental in providing critical care to those in need.

“But, as His Excellency pointed out, this is just the beginning.

“We urge everyone to join us in our mission to save lives.

“Together, we can create a healthier future for thousands of more children and adults across Nigeria”, she said.

The Founder of VOOM Foundation, Dr Vincent Ohaju, noted that their partnership with SEOF had saved many lives.

He said he is proud of the strides the partnership had made.

“However, we know there is much work to be done.

“I urge individuals, organisations, and governments to commit to supporting initiatives like this so we can continue to transform lives through better access to life-saving medical care”, Ohaju said. NAN
