0

Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang said his administration has so far invested N3.6 billion in the procurement of fertiliser and other farming inputs.

Mutfwang disclosed this during a New Year state broadcast yesterday in Jos.

The governor said the huge investment is aimed at boosting food production and other agricultural activities in the state.

“Our administration has so far invested over N3.6 billion in the purchase and distribution of fertilisers and other farming inputs to boost food production.

“A database of over 300,000 farmers has been collected and we have designed an online input distribution system to streamline resource allocation, which will be launched soon,”he said.

The governor noted that his administration had made significant improvement toward making Plateau the epicenter of agriculture in the country.

“We have reached advanced discussions with  African Development Bank, AfDB, to onboard Plateau as a participating state in the development of the Special Agro Processing Zone.

“BARC Farms has been partially reactivated, with a private investor establishing feedlots; successful trials for wheat, barley and grasses such as Napier and Brachiaria were conducted, setting the stage for mass production in 2025.

“Kuru Livestock Centre is set to be redesigned and construction will commence in January.

“Through the Agricultural Services and Training Centres, ASTC, over 6,000 hectares of land have been cultivated to assist displaced communities in returning to their homes and livelihoods,” he said.

Mutfwang said arrangements have been concluded to upgrade  Yakubu Gowon Airport to a cargo airport to facilitate the export of perishable crops and vegetables produced in our state.

He explained that his administration had also established  Plateau Commodity Marketing Company, PLACOM, toward addressing challenges in commodity trading, warehousing and market information systems. (NAN)

The Association of Six Geopolitical Zones has lauded Dr. Bello Matawalle, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, for his achievements in combating insecurity and pledged support for his efforts to create a safer and brighter future for the country in 2025.

In a New Year message delivered by the group’s spokesperson, Chigozie Emanuel Oyerimba, the association praised Matawalle’s success in tackling criminal activities, particularly in the fight against kidnappers and terrorists.

“We have seen what you achieved in 2024, especially in flushing out key criminal elements like Alhaji Halilu Sububu and thousands of others,” the statement read.

“This year, 2025, promises to be even bigger and more impactful under your leadership.”

The association credited Matawalle’s proactive approach to security for putting Nigeria on the path to becoming an insecurity-free nation.

It highlighted his commitment to fostering safety, including efforts to enable farmers to return to their fields and ensuring Nigerians can sleep peacefully at night.

“Your continuous support for the youth and your dedication to creating a secure environment for all Nigerians are commendable,” the group added.

Matawalle’s leadership was also acknowledged for fostering collaboration between security agencies and local communities, which the group said has significantly restored peace to previously troubled regions.

“Appointing you as the Minister of State for Defence was not a mistake. You deserve this position, and your track record proves it,” Oyerimba noted.

The association urged Nigerians to rally behind Matawalle’s initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collective action in achieving national security and prosperity.

Dr. Bello Matawalle, a former governor, has received widespread praise for his strategies to combat terrorism, banditry, and other threats, focusing on inter-agency cooperation and addressing the root causes of violence.

The association expressed optimism that his leadership would lead to further security improvements in the year ahead.

Illicit Money Will Be Taxed Under New Tax Bill – Taiwo

0

By Dickson Pat, Abuja

Chairman, Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele has said that illicit funds in Nigeria such as laundered money or proceeds of crimes will also be taxed under the controversial tax reform bill.

Oyedele made the assertion when speaking on an X space hosted by Nairametrics in partnership with Business Day, BudgIT, and CODE.

He explained that the government will rely on data and intelligence reports to track illicit funds of Nigerians and tax them before probing the sources of such funds.

He said such tax will be collected through what he tagged a “voluntary disclosure programme”, in which people will declare the source of their funds whether legal or illegal.

“Yes, we have provisions, for illicit funds, in those bills. You have to pay tax regardless of the source of the income, and once we find that you have revenue, including from the international data we’re going to be receiving, and you can’t explain it, you have to pay the tax.

“But for people to be able to do that almost seamlessly, we plan to do a voluntary disclosure programme, where we give the people the opportunity to self-declare before we now come down on them because this time around there is going to be data and everybody will know it is not a joke,” he clarified.

Oyedele further explained that the government will find out the revenue of citizens whether a citizen discloses or not.

“We are going to write you and tell you, “This is how much you have in your account”, the number of bank accounts that you have; how much money you spend on your payment card; the money you have with investment accounts and asset management, stock accounts, how many times you have travelled abroad.

“I don’t want to scare anybody but these are pieces of cake that they have been doing in small, large, developed, underdeveloped countries for years. So we are not even doing anything that is novel, we are just trying to be at par with the rest of the world.”

Oyedele also noted that expanding the tax net to the underworld of crimes will help Nigeria fight corruption.

He said: “We think this will also help us to fight corruption because if we want to do this seriously, this is how to tackle corruption.

“Because I find money that you can’t explain, then I collect the tax fast, then I come back to say “by the way, where did you get the money from?”

He added that the bill makes provision for an Ombudsman to ensure that taxpayers are not cheated and overtaxed. He said the Ombudsman would be legally empowered to function

“The Ombudsman can also bite. And it is not just about protecting the vulnerable person, you come in and just vent. The Ombudsman has the means and resources to intervene immediately. And there are consequences for the revenue authority if they don’t listen to you, including legally.”

The tax bill provides relief for low-income earners and small businesses as they would be exempt from income taxes and value-added taxes.

However, it is facing strong resistance from the Northern part of the country, where political stakeholders say it would not benefit the region. Virtually all governors in the Northern region have opposed the bill.

By Aliyu Galadima, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu  said his government would unveil the National Values Charter already approved by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, in the first quarter of 2025.

The president said this in his New Year message to Nigerians.

According to him, the charter will promote mutual commitments between  government and citizens, and foster trust and cooperation among diverse populations and between  government and  citizens.

“I will launch an ambitious national orientation campaign that fosters patriotism and love for our country and inspires citizens to rally together.

“As far-reaching and foundational as our reforms are, they can produce the desired outcomes only through shared common values and identities and unconditional love for our country,” Tinubu said.

The President also announced that the National Youth Confab earlier announced in October 2024 would start in Q1 2025.

“The Youth Confab will begin in the first quarter of 2025, a testament to our commitment to youth inclusiveness and investment as nation-builders.

“The Ministry of Youth will soon announce the modalities for selecting the conference’s representatives from our diverse, youthful population,” the president said.

He also urged governors and local council chairpersons to work closely with the central government to seize emerging opportunities in agriculture, livestock, and tax reforms and move the nation forward.

While appreciating  governors who have embraced the federal government’s CNG policy, the president said:

“I commend governors who have embraced our Compressed Natural Gas initiative by launching CNG-propelled public transport.

“I also congratulate those who have adopted electric vehicles as part of our national energy mix and transition.

”The federal government will always offer necessary assistance to the states.”

Tinubu urged Nigerians to become better citizens and uncompromising in their devotion and allegiance to the country to achieve national goals and objectives.

He said citizens’ moral rectitude and faith in the country were fundamental to the success of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.

“In 2025, we will commit to promoting adherence to ethical principles, shared values and beliefs under the National Identity Project,” he said.

Tinubu first announced the plans to convene a National Youth Confab during his October 1, 2024, presidential address to the nation, noting that it would address the diverse challenges and opportunities confronting youths.

According to him, the 30-day Confab will unite young people nationwide to collaboratively develop solutions to issues such as education, employment, innovation, security, and social justice.

He said the conference would provoke meaningful dialogue and empower our young people, who constituted more than 60% of the population, to participate actively in nation-building.

The president added that the modalities of this Confab and selection of delegates would be designed in close consultation with young people through their representatives.

By Charles Ebi, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has restated his administration’s unwavering commitment to reduce the inflation rate from 34.6% to 15% by the end of 2025.

He made this known in his New Year message to Nigerians  yesterday.

“In 2025, our government is committed to intensifying efforts to lower these costs by boosting food production and promoting local manufacturing of essential drugs and other medical supplies,” Tinubu explained. “We are resolute in our ambition to reduce inflation from its current high of 34.6% to 15%.” The president emphasized the progress made in key economic areas in 2024.

“Fuel prices have gradually decreased, and we recorded foreign trade surpluses in three consecutive quarters. Foreign reserves have risen, and the Naira has strengthened against the US dollar, bringing greater stability,” he said.

Tinubu also lauded the record growth of the stock market, which generated trillions of naira in wealth, and a surge in foreign investment that signaled renewed global confidence in Nigeria’s economic policies. However, he acknowledged that food and essential drug prices continued to strain many Nigerian households, a challenge his administration is determined to tackle in 2025.

Reflecting on the challenges faced in 2024, Tinubu acknowledged the economic hardships endured by households but highlighted several indicators pointing to a brighter economic future.

“Though 2024 posed numerous challenges to our citizens and households, I am confident that the New Year will bring brighter days. Economic indicators point to a positive and encouraging outlook for our nation,” Tinubu stated.

President Tinubu’s 2025 budget presentation, made on December 18, 2024, projected a reduction in inflation from the current rate of 34.6% to 15% in 2025. The proposed budget, which is about ₦22 trillion higher than that of 2024, includes significant allocations for defense and security (₦4.91 trillion), infrastructure (₦4.06 trillion), health (₦2.4 trillion), and education (₦3.5 trillion), among other sectors.

Despite these ambitious plans, analysts remain skeptical about the feasibility of these projections, especially the inflation target.

When Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at 22.41%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS. However, inflation surged to an alarming 34.6% by November 2024, a rise many economists attribute to the president’s controversial policies, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the country’s foreign exchange rates.

Despite these challenges, President Tinubu’s budget speech projected optimism, not only for inflation but also for the exchange rate, which he believes will improve from ₦1,700 per dollar to ₦1,500 per dollar by 2025.

Checks by Nairametrics show that the exchange rate between the naira and the dollar ended the year at N1,535/$1 representing a 40.9% depreciation for 2024.

The official exchange rate between the naira and dollar closed in 2023 at N907.11/$1 thus depreciating by 40.9% for the year which compares to a 49.1% devaluation at the end of 2023.

Oyebanji Pledges More Support For Revenue Agency

Ekiti State governor, Biodun Oyebanji has pledged to give more support to the management and staff of Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, EKIRS, to boost  Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, and enhance greater development.

The governor therefore charged  revenue-generating Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, to cooperate with EKIRS to block  leakages by putting a stop to manual collection of tax and revenue.

While commending EKIRS for the improved revenue profile, Governor Oyebanji urged revenue-generating agencies to support and cooperate with the tax agency, charging them to do more for the state to rake in more funds into its coffers for his administration to serve the people better.

The governor made the remarks on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, while performing the turning of the sod for the construction of Revenue House that will  serve as the corporate head office of EKIRS.

He commended the EKIRS Chairman, Mr Olaniran Olatona and staff of the agency for working very hard in 2024 to receive national recognition as one of the best performing state revenue agencies in Nigeria by raising the IGR from N600 million to N1.8 billion monthly.

Apparently impressed with the figures posted by EKIRS in the outgoing year which he described as “an impressive performance,” Oyebanji said the welfare of staff has been of paramount concern to him, hence nothing would be spared to improve their welfare for better service delivery.

According to him, the groundbreaking of the new EKIRS corporate headquarters was not merely symbolic, but  signifies a critical step in enhancing seamless revenue generation and tax administration. The gesture, he added, is aimed at fostering economic growth and improving the lives of citizens.

Governor Oyebanji noted that staff of the revenue agency have demonstrated capacity and nothing should be spared to invest in them to do more, hence the approval granted the proposal for a new office complex that would motivate them to do more.

Reiterating the readiness of his administration to block all revenue loopholes, Governor Oyebanji promised to crack down on MDAs that engage in acts that encourage fraud in tax administration through alleged underhand dealings including manual collection of revenue which end up in private pockets.

He said: “I want to commend Team EKIRS for doing us proud by posting a very impressive performance nationally this year. With what you have been able to do, you have demonstrated dedication, commitment and capacity, so no amount is too much for us to invest in you.

“I also commend all revenue-generating agencies for their support; I charge them to do more and I plead with them to cooperate with EKIRS so that we can block  these leakages. I am aware that some of these MDAs are  doing manual transactions because that is  a window for them to continue stealing government money.

“As we move into 2025, we are going to be deliberate about this and we are going to come very hard on MDAs that deliberately sabotage our efforts to serve our people to the best of our ability. I know that EKIRS staff can do more than they are doing if they have the fullest cooperation of these MDAs.

“We will try as much as possible to support you so that you can post a better performance in 2025 and I assure you that your welfare will be a personal concern to me. You have done so well that people are asking what are we doing differently in Ekiti, but we just have dedicated staff that have put on the cap of a  private sector player.”

Earlier in his address, the EKIRS chairman expressed gratitude to the governor for providing the agency with a prime piece of land which is strategically located in the heart of the state capital, noting that the approval was predicated on his delight with the performance of the staff.

Mr Olatona noted that the Revenue House would enable the agency qualify for more collaboration with the Joint Tax Board and other bodies, reduce the stress for taxpayers and also provide them with seamless access to services and information.

The revenue boss said the project stands as a beacon of his team’s dedication to excellence, transparency and accountability, revealing that the professionals involved in the construction including architects, engineers, builders and workmen are from the state whom he said are competent to do a good job.

Former EKIRS Chairman, Mr Isola Akingbade, noted that the project, when completed, would be one of the best in the country. He hailed the governor’s commitment in making life better for the entire people of the state since his assumption of office.

The Project Manager, Engr Olajide Dada, promised to deliver the job within the scope of time, noting that enough men and resources are available to ensure the delivery of a quality project.

The event was attended by SpeakerAdeoye Aribasoye; Secretary to the State Government, Dr Habibat Adubiaro; Head of Service, Dr Folakemi Olomojobi; members of the House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, among others.

The commissioner added that the council approved the money as intervention to the State Pension Board for the payment of outstanding retirement benefits to pensioners as presented by the Office of the Head of Service at the meeting.

Minerals Exploration: Stakeholders Commend  Ban Reversal

0

Some stakeholders in the mining sector have commended the federal government for reversing the five-year ban on mineral exploration activities in Zamfara State.

The stakeholders made the commendation in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, yesterday in Abuja.

NAN reports that the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, recently announced the reversal of the ban on mining exploration in Zamfara, citing significant improvement of the security situation in the state.

NAN recalls that the federal government banned all forms of mining exploration in Zamfara in 2019, following alarming reports of banditry and its link to illegal mining.

National President, Miners Association of Nigeria, MAN, Mr Dele Ayankele, thanked the minister for the move, explaining that the ban deprived government of accruable revenues.

Ayankele stated that insecurity and banditry, which led to the ban, had also resulted in unnecessary budgetary allocations being wasted to maintain peace in the area.

“This is not to talk of unquantifiable losses to the mining lease holders in Zamfara, who might have lost their titles due to non-remittance of appropriate fees and levies as at when due.

“Also holders may have experienced inability to service loans and its attendant piling debts, rotten equipment, loss of manpower and social embarrassment due to inability to maintain their family obligations,“ he said.

He commended the minster for efforts leading to the ban reversal.

According to him, the effectiveness of the move will be determined by the measures put in place to sustain the security recorded in the state.

He acknowledged the determination of the minister to secure mining sites across the country, particularly through inter-ministerial collaborations.

“All these will be unveiled early in the coming year, as lease holders attempt to resume mining operations,“ he said.

Similarly,  Secretary of the Association of Miners and Processors of Barite, AMABOP, Patrick Odiegwu, described the reversal as a step in the right direction and a welcome development.

He stated that continous suspension of economic activities could lead to more insecurity, as residents of the affected areas might become idle and resort to unlawful means to sustain themselves.

According to Odiegwu, government should consolidate on the reversal by leveraging  technology to secure mining areas and beyond.

He explained that analog security measures may not be effective in addressing insecurity compared to a modern monitoring system that incorporates artificial intelligence.

“If we want to apply guns towards securing our environment, we will continue to have insecurity. If we apply technology, huge artificial intelligence, robotics, you don’t even need to lose one soldier.

“Government has the capacity to monitor every body in Nigeria, individually, if such system is available,“ he said.

He emphasised that proactive measures are necessary to keep bandits on the run and maintain the peace that had been established. NAN
