FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Edo State chapter has warned commercial banks not to conspire with the state government to alter the signatories of local government councils accounts.

Chairman of the State PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr Anthony Aziegbemi gave the warning while speaking with journalists in Benin City.

Aziegbemi, who alleged that the directive by Governor Monday Okpebholo to banks to change the signatories of the accounts of councils was to pave the way for the looting of funds.

He threatened that if any bank obeys the directives, the party would have no option than to drag it to court.

The chairman also alleged reports of illegal requests for sensitive council documents by unauthorised persons in the state.

According to him, “We are also witnessing another very disturbing trend,  local government chairmen are signatories to the account of their various councils.

“What Governor Okpebholo and his cohorts are trying to do is to change the signatories of those accounts making sure that the elected chairmen that are supposed to be signatories to these accounts do not have access to it.

“We have also witnessed unauthorised attempts to alter signatories to local government accounts, as well as clandestine efforts to withdraw funds without a proper mandate.

“There are also reports of illegal requests for sensitive documents by unauthorised persons.”

Aziegbemi noted that the flagrant disregard for the  judiciary and the subversion of the constitution by the Edo State government in the purported suspension of the 18 local government chairmen and their vice is a serious threat to  democracy.

He added that the action would not only undermine the rule of law, but also create a dangerous precedent, weakening the entire legal and democratic system.

By Dickson Pat, Abuja

All the Electricity Distribution Companies, DisCos, risk a 5% reduction of their administrative operational expenditure if they fail to offtake at least 95% of available nominated energy for two out of three months per quarter.

This was contained in a newly introduced addendum Order on Performance Monitoring Framework for Electricity Distribution Companies, DisCos, issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC’.

The Addendum1, issued on December 23, 2024, introduces significant updates to the Key Performance Indicators, KPIs, originally stipulated in the Order issued on July 5, 2024.

The revised Key Performance Indicators, KPIs, will take effect from the first quarter of 2025.

“The Order seeks to ensure compliance with the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These include accountability by the DisCos’ management, increased operational performance, improved energy delivery to customers, and customer satisfaction,” the statement read.

“DisCos must now ensure they offtake at least 95% of available nominated energy for two out of three months per quarter.

” A failure to meet this target will result in a 5% reduction in the DisCo’s administrative operational expenditure for the subsequent quarter. This adjustment aims to incentivize DisCos to optimize energy delivery to customers.

“Compliance with the Uniform System of Accounts has been revised from a monthly to a two-month per quarter basis.

“Enforcement Action for Default: Non-compliance for two months within a quarter will trigger stringent enforcement measures, including the possible withdrawal of the “Fit and Proper” approval for the DisCo’s Chief Finance Officer or equivalent positions”, the statement added.

On the timeline for customers’ complaints resolution, the order stated: “The timeline for resolving customer complaints via the NERC Contact Centre and NERC Headquarters has been updated. DisCos must now achieve a 75% resolution rate for all complaints within a quarter, reflecting an increased focus on customer satisfaction”.

LCCI Outlines Strategic Priorities For Economy In 2025

0

From Rotimi Asher, Lagos

Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry, LCCI, has identified strategic priorities for Nigeria’s economic recovery and growth in 2025.

In its New Year statement made available to journalists, the Chamber acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians and the business community in navigating significant economic challenges in 2024, including inflationary pressures, volatile exchange rates, and high production costs.

Reflecting on 2024, LCCI highlighted the nation’s tumultuous economic landscape, shaped by the removal of fuel subsidies, rising inflation, and tight monetary policies.

The Chamber noted that inflation climbed from 22.79 per cent in mid-2023 to 34.60 per cent by November 2024, driven by increases in food prices, transportation costs, and energy expenses.

Core inflation rose to 28.75 per cent during the same period. GDP growth for 2024 was modest at an estimated 3.46 prr cent, hindered by structural inefficiencies, insecurity, and global headwinds.

According to the Chamber, globally, the economic landscape is poised for transformation, influenced by shifts in U.S. leadership, trade policies, and energy strategies.

Domestically, Nigeria faces persistent challenges, including high inflation, foreign exchange scarcity, and low foreign direct investment, FDI’. Capital inflows in Q2 2024 stood at $2.6bn, a 22.85 per cent decline from the previous quarter, while FDI contributions were a mere 1.2 per cent of total investments.

On sectoral performance and outlook, the Chamber provided insights into key sectors:

On agriculture the Chamber noted that despite contributing 28.65 per cent to GDP at its peak, the sector faced challenges from insecurity, high input costs, and climate variability. Growth in 2025 is expected to benefit from government initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and value chains.

On manufacturing LCCI said the sector, contributing 8.9 per cent to GDP, struggled with high costs, energy shortages, and foreign exchange volatility. It noted that moderate growth is anticipated in 2025, driven by improved infrastructure and local production policies.

While on construction and real estate it said contributing 3.35 per cent and 5.43 per cent to GDP respectively, these sectors saw growth constrained by high material costs and financing barriers.

The recently launched Real Estate Investment Fund is expected to stimulate growth in 2025.

Speaking on public debt and fiscal policy, LCCI noted that Nigeria’s public debt reached an estimated N134.3tn, $91.3bn, in 2024, driven by budget deficits and rising debt servicing costs.

Debt servicing consumed nearly 162 per cent of government revenue, limiting fiscal space for development. LCCI emphasized the need for fiscal discipline and innovative revenue strategies in 2025.

The Chamber outlined six key areas for government to focus in 2025 which include addressing inflation and ensuring price stability, strengthening fiscal sustainability and effective debt management, improving the ease of doing business to attract investment, tackling unemployment and empowering youth, enhancing food and energy security and advancing trade and investment to diversify revenue sources.

With GDP growth projected at 3.2 per cent by the IMF, LCCI expressed cautious optimism for 2025. Inflation is expected to ease as monetary policies take effect, and trade, agriculture, and manufacturing are poised to drive job creation. However, achieving these goals will require bold reforms, public-private partnerships, and targeted investments in critical sectors such as telecommunications, oil and gas, and renewable energy.

LCCI President Gabriel Idahosa called for collaboration between the private and public sectors to unlock sustainable growth and improve the well-being of Nigerians. “Businesses must embrace innovation, digital transformation, and sustainability to overcome challenges and seize opportunities in 2025,” he said.

FMC Bida: MD Slams Petitioner, Says Accusation  Baseless

0

FROM SAMSON ALFA, MINNA

Medical Director, MD, Federal Medical Centre,  FMC, Bida, Niger State, Dr Abubakar Usman, said the recent petition alleging poor performance by the hospital is baseless and unfounded.

Usman, who was responding to the recent petition by some groups, “titled request for the removal of Dr Usman Abubakar as medical Director of FMC Bida”, said the petitioners are far from the truth on the functions and activities of the center.

According to him, their alleged claims of unprecedented departure of key consultant doctors, poor management, dysfunctional equipment, CT scan machines, dialysis and non-functional oxygen plants are an imaginary tendency to satisfy their selfish interest.

The medical director, while responding to the allegations, said as a public figure, he is subject to scrutiny, criticism  and disagreement over the  mass exodus  of consultants from the hospital.

“We have 60 consultants  as against 39 in 2021 when I assumed office. They offer services  in various specialities and sub- specialties.

“Also the application of seven other consultants  are  awaiting waiver for recruitment in 2025. There is also an increase in the number of other professionals like nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, laboratory scientists in the last three years.”

On the alleged neglect of key medical equipment, he explained that it is far from the truth. The hospital has six functional dialysis machines and a new one is to be installed soon.

The medical director  disclosed that plan is underway to procure a new CT scan machine with five years maintenance contract, adding that the petitioners claims of  non- functional oxygen plants  is unfounded.

“Oxygen plants were procured and installed on August 28, 2021, while the one donated by the federal ministry of health and social welfare was installed on  November 9, 2022.

“I will like to inform you that since the installation of the first plant, the hospital has been the major supplier of oxygen to the entire state and has not procured  from any vendor. The second oxygen plant sited at IBB Hospital supplies  Minna General Hospital, Jumai Babangida Maternal and Neonatal Hospital Minna and other private hospitals in the state,” he pointed out.

Usman, however, disclosed that the only challenge facing the hospital is inadequate bed space and expressed commitment to uphold the highest standard of medical excellence.

NASS ‘ll Soon Go After Saboteurs In Oil Sector — Senate Leader

0

…says 2025 budget, Tax Reform bills, others top agenda for legislative action

From Abdullateef Bamgbose

The National Assembly (NASS) will soon go after alleged saboteurs in the oil sector, said the Leader of the Senate, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central).

Bamidele who stated this in a personally signed new year message to Nigerians, listed consideration of the N49.7 trillion 2025 budget, the tax reform bills, amendment of the 1999 Constitution etc, as items topping the legislative agenda of NASS in the new year.

Bamidele in the message titled: “Another Year of Limitless Opportunities”, said the National Assembly will dutifully sustain the drive of the President Bola Tinubu led government to deepen global best practice in the country’s petroleum industry.

“This is the rationale behind the Senate Ad-hoc Committee to Investigate Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.

“Considering the significance of the Committee, the National Assembly has initiated the process to constitute a joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives to look more decisively and incisively into diverse issues spurring infraction and sabotage in the petroleum.

“We recognise that a number of unfinished tasks are currently pending before the two chambers of the National Assembly. But consistent with the principles of rational choice, we address each of these tasks in order of national priority or significance.

“Consequently, the new few weeks will be devoted to the scrutiny of the Appropriation Bill, 2025; Tax Reform Bills, 2024; investigation of economic sabotage in the petroleum industry, amendment of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and key economic reform initiatives that have been in the pipeline to open up Nigeria for real businesses that will throw up limitless opportunities,” he said.

He added that the constructive collaboration the National Assembly has been having with the executive since June 2023 , is already yielding positive results and repositioning the Nation’s economy for the benefit of Nigeria and Nigerians.

He said: “With the multi-tiered interventions by the Presidency and National Assembly, for instance, Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals commenced operations within the 2024 fiscal year. Likewise, Port Harcourt Refining Command Warri Refining & Petrochemicals Company are now back to operations after almost two decades of dysfunction.

“The operations of these refineries are a testament to the political will of the government of All Progressives Congress to reverse all negative trends that plague our economy and polity.

“Beyond the downstream petroleum sector, the National Assembly has leveraged its multi-tiered interventions in virtually all strategic sectors to reverse the regression that the country recorded at different times between 2011 and 2023.

“The approach has spurred steady growth in our gross domestic products all through 2024. It has sustainably translated to 2.98% growth in the first quarter; 3.19% in the second quarter; 3.46% in the third quarter and may be as high as 4% in the fourth quarter.

“Also, our debt-service-revenue ratio has shrunk from 97% in June 2023 to 65% in November 2024, and I believe the margin will further shrink in the new year we began on Wednesday.

“Each of these records is indeed a great leap forward, and our parliamentary agenda that emphasises strategic collaboration among government arms without prejudice to our constitutionally guaranteed independence has made it obviously attainable.

“All these outcomes simply means Nigeria is now out of the vicious cycle of fuel importation that cost her $600 million, which annually translates to $7.2 billion.

“It also means the operations of these refineries will significantly reduce undue pressure on the Naira; guarantee stability in the foreign exchange market and trigger an unprecedented crash of consumer price index, often used to measure inflation.”

From Our Correspondent

Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, and Kogi Central Senatorial District stood still on Tuesday, as residents trooped out en-masse to welcome the immediate past governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello who travelled home for the New Year celebrations.

Addressing the mammoth crowd, Governor Ododo said Bello had laid a solid foundation for the sustainable growth and development of the state.

The governor pointed out that the ability of Bello’s administration to reform the civil service and institute a productive workforce was a solid foundation on which the current administration is thriving.

According to him, the prompt payment of salaries by his administration is the outcome of the efforts and foresight of the Bello administration.

The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland charged the people of Ebiraland at home and in the diaspora to embrace peace, speak with one voice and prioritise the interest of Ebiraland over personal interest.

The monarch, who offered prayers for Ebiraland and Kogi State in general, solicited support for Governor Ododo to enable him achieve more development for the state.

In his speech, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Bello described the former governor as the one who laid a solid foundation for the state in the areas of infrastructure and human capital development.

He assured that based on the activities of the Governor Ododo-led administration, 2025 would usher in peace, unity and development to Kogi State.

Pope Francis Advocates Debt Forgiveness For Poor Countries

0

Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, yesterday, advocated debt forgiveness for poor countries to enable them come out of the woods and  develop.

The Pope made the call in his 2025 World Day of Peace message, annually marked on January 1 to encourage peace in the world.

The theme of the global event for 2025 is ‘Forgive Us Our Trespasses, Grant Us Your Peace.’

The Pope’s message was read by the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Reverend Alfred Martins, during Mass to commemorate the day.

The event was marked at the Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral, Lagos, to promote peaceful co-existence.

The archbishop quoted the Pope as saying “God does not weigh up the evil we commit, rather he is immensely rich in mercy, for the great love with which he loved us ( Eph 2:4).

“That yet he also hears the plea of the poor and the cry of the earth.

“What the world will do is simply to stop for a moment, at the beginning of 2025 to think of the mercy with which he constantly forgives our sins and forgives our every debt, so that our hearts may overflow with hope and peace.”

The leader of the Vatican added that “in teaching us to pray the “Our Father”, Jesus started by asking the Father to forgive our trespasses, but passes immediately to the challenging words, ‘as we forgive those who trespass against us (cf. Mt 6:12).

“In order to forgive others their trespasses and to offer them hope, we need to be filled with that same hope, the fruits of our experiences of God’s mercies.”

According to him, hope overflows in generosity and it is free of calculation, making no hidden demands, with the aim of raising those who have fallen, heal broken hearts and set free those in bondage.

He said “at the beginning of this Year of Grace, I will like to offer three proposals capable of restoring dignity to lives and enable people to set out anew on the journey of hope.

“In this way, the debt crisis can be overcome and all of us can once more, realise that we are debtors whose debts have been forgiven.”

He renewed the appeal launched by Saint John Paul II on the occasion of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 to consider reducing substantially, if not cancelling outright, the international debt which threatens the future of many nations.

He appealed to more prosperous countries to forgive the debts of those nations that have no capacity to repay the amount they owe.

A new financial framework must be devised to create a global charter based on solidarity and harmony between peoples, he suggested.
