From Our Correspondent

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen  Abaniwonda has summoned the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Ovwian/Aladja Division, CSP Bulus Musa, and his team over a petition from  Aladja Community in Udu Local Government Area.

The petition, addressed to the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Olukayode Egbetokun, claimed that two notorious criminals escaped from police custody.

A senior officer from the state police command, who craved anonymity, disclosed the development yesterday.

According to the officer, “The commissioner has summoned the DPO and officers on duty for investigation. This incident appears to be a case of sabotage by some bad elements within the system. The commissioner is determined to ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable, and he has ordered the immediate re-arrest of the escaped criminals.”

The petitioners called for investigation and decisive action against the DPO and his team over the escape of the suspects identified as Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers) and Debi.

The suspects were said to have been apprehended by  Aladja Security Crack Team, ASCT, on December 31, 2024, following increased criminal activities in the area.

Alongside two others, Kelvin Dukuye and Philip Faka, the suspects were handed over to Ovwian/Aladja Police Station, alongside ammunition, through the efforts of the Secretary of Udu Local Government Council, Andrew Gbise.

On January 4, officers from the police station informed the community that two of the suspects, Jobome and Debi had escaped from custody.

The revelation sparked outrage from the community, which accused the police of negligence and possible foul play.

Expressing grave concern over the escape, t

Aladja Community Council  emphasised that the two suspects were among the most dangerous criminals in the area.

They demanded their immediate re-arrest, as well as accountability from the police officers involved.

The petition also highlighted the need for the IGP and the police commissioner to take swift action to restore public confidence in law enforcement and address security challenges in Aladja and its environs.

Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Evans Bipi,  said  no death was recorded in a collapsed three-storey building  in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The commissioner, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Emeka Idika, yesterday, said  the affected building under construction collapsed on Saturday, January 4.

According to him, the timely rescue mission by the ministry alongside other joint efforts averted the loss of lives, as victims were taken to the hospital for medical care.

The commissioner said no fewer than seven persons sustsined various degrees of injuries in the incident.

“It is unfortunate that we are beginning the year with this tragic incident, though no life was lost, this is the fourth building collapse in the state since I assumed office.

“Preliminary investigation at the scene of the incident showed that the building may have collapsed due to the use of substandard materials by the builder.

“Specifically, the use of 12mm rods for decking a building is a clear violation of construction standards, unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as similar cases in the state had been linked to the same cause.

”The property has been sealed pending investigation into the cause of the collapse,” the commissioner said.(NAN)

Diallo earns Man Utd deserved draw at Liverpool

0

Amad Diallo struck a late equaliser as Manchester United made a mockery of their recent form to hold Premier League leaders Liverpool to a thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday.

It looked as though Ruben Amorim’s United would go home empty-handed despite a vastly-improved display but Diallo swept in a shot in the 80th minute to earn his side a point.

United had gone ahead in the 52nd minute when Lisandro Martinez powered home a ferocious shot from a tight angle.

But an off-key Liverpool responded seven minutes later with Cody Gakpo curling home a stunning equaliser before Mohamed Salah put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot.

After Diallo’s leveller both sides had chances to win in a frantic finale with United’s Harry Maguire spooning a glorious chance over the crossbar with the last kick of the game.

As the fans made for the exits on a freezing afternoon it was United’s who were happiest after watching a display that offered hope of better things to come in 2025.

Liverpool remain in control of the title race with 46 points from 19 games, six ahead of Arsenal with a game in hand as they seek to equal United’s 20 English crowns. United moved up a place to 13th with 23 points.

Based on the current form and confidence levels of the two teams, many of the United fans who made the trip on a grim afternoon might have feared a mauling similar to March 2023 when a rampant Liverpool put seven goals past their arch-rivals.

2024: A Historic Year for Nigerian Football

0

By Patrick Ngwaogu

The year 2024 has been a landmark year for Nigerian football, with achievements that have solidified the country’s status as a powerhouse in African and global football. From the success of the national teams to individual player accolades, Nigeria has truly demonstrated excellence on the pitch. Under the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, the country has reached new heights and set the stage for even greater accomplishments in 2025.

Let us take a comprehensive look at Nigeria’s remarkable footballing achievements in 2024.

Major Achievements of 2024

  1. Super Eagles Qualified for AFCON 2025

One of the highlights of 2024 was the qualification of the Super Eagles for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is set to take place in Morocco. The Nigerian national team displayed a commanding performance during the qualification campaign, finishing at the top of their group. This achievement reflects the resurgence of the Super Eagles under their new coach, who has instilled discipline, tactical flexibility, and attacking flair.

Key players like Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Samuel Chukwueze played pivotal roles in ensuring that Nigeria secured a place in the prestigious tournament. Osimhen, in particular, had a stellar year, emerging as one of Africa’s top goal scorers. Fans are optimistic that the Super Eagles will not only participate but contend for the title in Morocco.

  1. Nigeria’s Participation in the CAF Women’s Champions League

In the women’s football arena, Nigerian clubs once again demonstrated their dominance by qualifying for the CAF Women’s Champions League. Clubs such as Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens have consistently represented Nigeria with pride, and their qualification for this year’s tournament is a testament to the strength of women’s football in the country.

With players like Rasheedat Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe setting the standard, Nigeria is not only producing exceptional players but also leading the way in promoting and developing women’s football in Africa.

  1. CHAN 2025 Qualification

The home-based Super Eagles, composed of players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), secured their spot in the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). This tournament is exclusively for players plying their trade within the continent, and Nigeria’s qualification underscores the growing competitiveness of the NPFL.

The team’s qualification campaign was marked by resilience and skill, with standout performances from players like Chijioke Akuneto and Ebube Duru. The CHAN tournament presents an excellent opportunity for these players to gain international exposure and further their careers.

  1. Olympic Qualification for Women’s Football

Another historic milestone for Nigeria in 2024 was the qualification of women’s football teams for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. This achievement marks a return to the global stage for Nigerian football.

The men’s team, led by a new generation of stars, has been hailed as one of the most talented squads in recent years. Meanwhile, the women’s team, the Super Falcons, continues to build on their legacy as one of Africa’s most successful teams. Both teams are set to make Nigeria proud on the world stage in 2024.

  1. Individual Player Accolades

The year also saw Nigerian players receiving recognition for their outstanding performances:

• Lookman Ademola was crowned the CAF African Player of the Year (Men), cementing his place as one of the best strikers in the world. His exploits for both club and country have made him a role model for aspiring young players across Africa.
• Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons’ goalkeeper, was named the CAF African Goalkeeper of the Year (Female). Her heroics in goal have been instrumental in Nigeria’s success, and she continues to inspire young female goalkeepers across the continent.

These individual accolades reflect the quality of Nigerian players and their impact on both domestic and international football.

  1. 44th in FIFA Rankings

Nigeria ended 2024 ranked 44th in the FIFA World Rankings, a significant improvement from previous years. This rise is a direct result of consistent performances across all levels of national football. The Super Eagles’ victories in competitive matches, coupled with strong showings in friendlies, have contributed to this upward trajectory.

This ranking not only highlights the progress made by Nigerian football but also serves as motivation to aim even higher in 2025.

  1. CAF Best Female Team of the Year
  2. Staff training for the first time in many years
  3. Adequate training for the referees Including providing them with compensation Equipment
  4. Winning the Under 20 WAFU Tournament and qualifying for under 20 AFCON
  5. Staff training for the first time in many years
The Super Falcons added another feather to their cap by being named the CAF Best Female Team of the Year. This award is a testament to their dominance in African football and their resilience in the face of challenges. The team’s performance in 2024, including their qualification for the Olympics and their spirited displays in international competitions, have been nothing short of exemplary.

The Role of Leadership: Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau

The achievements of 2024 would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau. His tenure has been marked by a renewed focus on grassroots development, improved player welfare, and enhanced partnerships with sponsors. Gusau’s commitment to transparency and accountability has restored confidence in Nigerian football administration.
Under his guidance, the NFF has prioritized youth development programs, ensuring a steady pipeline of talent for the national teams.

His efforts to professionalize the NPFL and invest in women’s football have also paid dividends, as seen in the success of Nigerian clubs and national teams.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As Nigeria basks in the glory of 2024, the focus now shifts to sustaining this momentum in 2025. Here are some key areas to watch:

1. AFCON 2025: The Super Eagles will aim to win their fourth AFCON title in Morocco. With a talented squad and a strong coaching team, the expectations are high.
2. World Cup 2026 Qualification: The standing of the Super Eagles on World cup qualifying table may not look bright, but there is surely light at the end of the tunnel. The vigour that the remaining qualifiers would be prosecuted will further elevate Nigeria’s footballing reputation.
3. Youth Development: The continued success of the Golden Eaglets and other youth teams will be crucial for the future of Nigerian football.
4. Club Football: Nigerian clubs will aim for continental glory in the CAF Champions League and CAF Women’s Champions League.
5. Improved FIFA Rankings: With consistent performances, Nigeria could break into the top 30 of the FIFA rankings in 2025.

The year 2024 has been a banner year for Nigerian football, filled with achievements that have brought pride to the nation. From the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualification to the Super Falcons’ accolades, the successes on the pitch have been matched by improvements off it, thanks to the leadership of Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau.

As we look forward to 2025, there is every reason to believe that Nigerian football will continue to thrive. With a talented pool of players, dedicated administrators, and passionate fans, the future is bright for the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, and all other national teams.

Australia end 10-year wait for series win over India

0

Australia held their collective nerve to clinch a blockbuster five-test series against India 3-1 on Sunday and take custody of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade.

In keeping with a pulsating series where momentum swung back and forth by the session, the fifth test remained on a knife edge until the final hour when Australia eased to a six-wicket triumph.

Perhaps helped by Jasprit Bumrah’s inability to bowl because of a back injury, Travis Head and debutant Beau Webster guided Australia to their victory target of 162 runs with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 58.

The win in front of a packed house at a Sydney Cricket Ground bathed in pink for Glenn McGrath’s cancer charity also ensured Australia will defend their World Test Championship title against South Africa at Lord’s in June.

“It felt like it was kind of seesawing throughout the whole series so to finish it 3-1, to hold the trophy, is an amazing feeling,” said Australia skipper Pat Cummins.

“I’m immensely proud, I absolutely love playing with these guys and it’s been a lot of fun along the way as well.”

Abuja Residents Face 15-Day Power Outage From Today Jan 6 – TCN

0

By Charles Ebi

Abuja residents have been notified of a planned 15-day power outage from Monday, January 6 to 20, 2025.

This announcement was made in a statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, Transmission Company of Nigeria ,TCN, on Friday.

The outage is necessitated by the Federal Capital Development Agency’s ,FCDA, road dualization project along the Apo axis.

According to TCN, “Eight number 132kV and 33kV towers will be relocated along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line ,Outer Southern Expressway route. This relocation work will necessitate a planned power outage from Monday, 6th January to Monday,  January 20, 2025 from 9:am to 4:pm daily, which is the estimated duration for the dismantling and construction of the towers as well as restringing of the power cables that would enable resumption of bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from Gwagwalada Substation”.

This initiative, the statement says, is essential to facilitate the expansion and modernization of the Outer Southern Expressway, a project expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency and enhance urban development in the capital city.

The areas affected by this planned outage, according to the TCN statement, include Kubwa, Karu, Maraba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and Apo Mechanic.

It will also impact parts of the Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and Alaita axis. Customers of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company ,AEDC, in these locations will experience electricity rationing during the specified period.

The relocation of the transmission towers is critical for the successful completion of the Outer Southern Expressway road project, an initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and infrastructure in the capital city.

TCN, however, expressed regret over the temporary inconvenience this outage will cause, stating, “While the relocation of the transmission towers is a necessity for the road completion project, TCN apologizes for the inconvenience this planned power outage will cause and assures that power supply will be restored as soon as the towers relocation and cable stringing are completed”.

Last week, the TCN informed the public that Abuja residents will experience temporary power outages this weekend due to essential maintenance work at two critical transmission substations.

According to TCN, these planned activities were designed to enhance the operational efficiency and reliability of the power infrastructure in the affected areas.

The maintenance schedule commenced on Saturday, December 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which TCN engineers undertook technical servicing on a 60MVA power transformer and its associated switchgears at the Gwagwalada 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation.
