Agency Report

Cross River State governor, Bassey Otu has removed two traditional rulers from office.

The governor on Saturday suspended the village head of Esuk Utan, Okkn Archinong Eke with the entire village council effective January 3.

Governor Otu, in a letter signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Gill Nsa, gave no  reasons for the sack of the monarchs, but mandated the Calabar Municipal Traditional Rulers Council, CMTRC, to investigate the allegations labeled against the village head and the council.

CMTRC was directed to submit its findings not later than one week.

Meanwhile, the governor has directed  Obutong clan council to set up a five-man committee to manage the affairs of  Esul Utan community pending the outcome of the investigation.

It would be recalled that in April 2024, the governor had ordered the removal of the head of Akansoko in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, His Royal Highness, Etinyin Archibong Ita who had acted when the former paramount ruler passed on.

The monarch had protested, saying the governor was wrong to select a paramount ruler for the area.

He insisted that the clan heads were supposed to meet and select one from among themselves to assume the position.

He said this did not happen and the selection of an acting paramount ruler by the governor was devoid of equity.

Otú, in a statement had  appointed the Clan Head of Esuk Mba Clan in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Etinyin Francis  Efa.

Harvard Alumnus Lauds Tinubu For Reviving Port Harcourt, Warri Refineries

… Seeks consultations on tax reform bills, wants Northern govs to invest in farms, factories

An Harvard University alumnus and prominent member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Engr Abdullahi Hashim, has commended President Bola Tinubu over the successful reactivation of the Port Harcourt Refinery and Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Plant.

Hashim, who is also member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, and a fellow member, College of Diplomacy and International Relations, FCDIR, said it is refreshing to note that Tinubu has demonstrated his capacity to change the narrative in the production of petroleum products for domestic use and export.

Speaking in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists on Sunday, Hashim said with the combined production of petroleum products from Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, the nation will be able to free up its foreign spending on importation of petrol  and shore up the value of Naira.

According to Hashim, there is the need to commend Tinubu in ensuring the successful reactivation of the two refineries, saying that it is on record that past governments since 1999 were unable to achieve the present feat.

Hashim, who is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers, NICE, said Tinubu’s positive action in the petroleum industry will encourage the country’s refining and development of Petrochemical Industry in the country rather than exporting huge capacity of crude produced.

He said, “It is important to commend President Tinubu in ensuring that two of the four refineries began operations within his first 18 months in office. This is salutary and cheering news.

“This is no mean feat  as Port Harcourt and Warri refineries had been laid prostate since 1999 by previous administrations while humongous millions of dollars were spent on suspicious Turn Around Maintenance, TAM, that never turned anything around but only left Nigerians more hopeless.

“I am also using this medium to urge the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, to ensure accelerated repair works on the Kaduna Refinery and the 150,000 bpd in the old Port Harcourt Refinery in order to bolster Nigeria’s status as Africa’s leading refiner of petroleum products.

“The successful reactivation of Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries will stimulate the development of downstream plants/facilities that will optimize energy by-products which will help establish a portfolio of petrochemicals, chemicals and fertilizer companies.

“The reactivation of the two refineries will make it possible for Nigeria to change from raw materials supplier to value-added product supplier.

“With this positive development, we as a country will have a local production of competitive goods which will help appreciate the Nigeria naira currency in relation to major international currencies.

“ As an expert in civil engineering and a stakeholder, my clarion call is not only for the federal and state government alone but also to individuals that have what it takes to invest in oil and gas business for the economic growth of Nigeria

“It is important to note that oil and gas are the most important sources of raw materials because they are cheaper, more accessible and can be processed easily from the refineries. Today, many products include gasoline, cosmetics, fertilizers, detergents, synthetic fabrics, asphalt and plastic are made from petrochemicals”.

The Harvard University alumnus also stated that  the present situation has changed the previous narrative where some people claimed that Nigeria had wasted about $3 Billion to overhaul refineries that had not produced a drop of petroleum products.

He added that though Warri refinery is not 100% completed , it is necessary to remind Nigerians that not many people can remember the last time the refinery produced AGO (diesel), Kerosene and naphtha which are now being produced by the refinery.

Meanwhile, Hashim has called for more consultations on the new tax reforms bill before the National Assembly, saying these is the need for understanding from the stakeholders to arrive at a consensus on the bill.

He said, “The new tax reform bill has spark a very heated debate across the country, the division cut across the regional lines. Thus, north is against it while south specifically Lagos is in support.

“The North  felt as if as they were shortchanged, but that is not the case, business happens everywhere in this Country, but the problem with the North is that, majority of the businesses in the north happens at informal level, this phenomenal has created a lot of leakage in VAT to the state where the consumption happened.

“I will admonished the northern Governors to invest in farms and factories, not airport and dry land bridges. The stake is much higher than absolute personal interest.

“Whether the bill is passed or not, the tax Reform Bill opened a Pandora ox of structural deficiencies and economic inadequacies that must be address with the greatest sense of urgency. The consequences of not wearing an authentic, high performance and value-driven thinking cap is unimaginable at this stage.

“It is high time our Governors work towards human capital development and raise the purchasing power of the people and come up with policies that will promote corporate businesses that are taxable and vatable”.

This was disclosed yesterday in Abuja by the spokesman of  NDLEA, Femi Babafemi.

According to Babafemi, the suspect had earlier been arrested by operatives of  Tincan Command, Lagos in June, 2024 for drug trafficking.

He said the suspect had earlier  prosecuted and sentenced to four years in prison.

The NDLEA spokesman also disclosed that when he was convicted by the Federal High Court in Lagos on June 14, 2024, the trial judge gave him an option of paying N750,000 fine, which he paid and was let go.

“However, in a series of operations in December 2024, NDLEA operatives at the export shed of the Lagos airport, intercepted no fewer than 52 passports of different countries.

“These were recovered from shipments going to Canada, Russia and other countries, and were concealed in shoe soles and food items.

“Further investigations led to the arrest of four members of three syndicates involved in the racket.

“The arrested suspects include: the ex-convict, Sodade, while others are Saheed Awwal, Salaudeen Afeez and Adebayo Bamigbade.

“Both the exhibits and the suspects were on Monday, December 30, 2024 handed over to the Zonal Command of the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, in Lagos for further investigation and possible prosecution,” he said.

The agency  disclosed that not less than 316,800 bottles of codeine-based syrup were recovered from two containers by NDLEA officers at  Port Harcourt Ports Complex, Onne, during a joint examination of the shipments with men of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, and other security agencies on Tuesday, December 31.

“The seizure followed credible intelligence processed by the Port Harcourt  command of the agency,” he stated.

Also, in Kano, NDLEA operatives on Tuesday, December 31, raided Mafarki, Dan Dishe area of Dala Local Government Area, where they recovered 149,090 pills of tramadol and exol-5 from a local dealer, 45 year-old Ismail Muhammad.

Again, in Kwara , a fresh graduate, Khadijat Abdulraheem, 24, and a 20 year-old student of the University of Ilorin, Ayomide Morakinyo were on Sunday, December 29,  arrested by NDLEA operatives at Tanke-University road, Oke Odo, Ilorin.

Babafemi said  their arrest was based on credible intelligence that they were producing and selling drug laced cupcakes to students in the community.

“When their apartment was searched, 42 pieces of drug laced  cakes were recovered,” he stated.

From Damola Adeloye, Ibadan

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde  said  the upgrade of Ibadan Airport to  international standard and Ibadan Circular Road projects are dear to his government and important for the expansion of the state economy.

The governor promised to deliver part of the airport project and the 32km East Wing segment of  Ibadan Circular Road in the current year.

Makinde stated this yesterday at the 2025 thanksgiving service of  Victory International Church, Rehoboth Cathedral, Ibadan.

He noted that his administration would do more for the people  in 2025, adding that  Ibadan Airport, when upgraded, would be viable and will compete favourably with Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The governor equally reiterated that his tenure would be remembered for building lasting infrastructure and institutions in the state.

According to him, Nigerians will survive the current economic hardship because tough people are wont to outlast tough times.

“I have always said that when I leave office, I do not want to be remembered just for the projects.

“But some projects are dear to my heart. These include the upgrade of Ibadan Airport to an international standard. Some people have said it is not a viable project because Ibadan is close to Lagos. That is true; but Ibadan Airport should have been an alternative airport to Lagos from day one.

“When we came in, there was no storage and fuel dispensing facility at the airport. How will it be viable if planes cannot come and refuel in this place? Now we have put the aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility there and, yesterday I saw with my eyes how airplanes were being refueled in our airport in Ibadan.

“So, we have removed one of the obstacles. We are also extending the runway so that a Boeing 787 will be able to land in the airport,” he said

Makinde also urged residents  to be ready to be held responsible for their actions as, according to him, government will enforce the rule of law across different sectors.

Earlier in his sermon, the Presiding Bishop of Victory International Church, Taiwo Adelakun called for continuous support for  government through prayers so that it can deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen  Abaniwonda has summoned the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of Ovwian/Aladja Division, CSP Bulus Musa, and his team over a petition from  Aladja Community in Udu Local Government Area.

The petition, addressed to the Inspector- General of Police, IGP, Olukayode Egbetokun, claimed that two notorious criminals escaped from police custody.

A senior officer from the state police command, who craved anonymity, disclosed the development yesterday.

According to the officer, “The commissioner has summoned the DPO and officers on duty for investigation. This incident appears to be a case of sabotage by some bad elements within the system. The commissioner is determined to ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable, and he has ordered the immediate re-arrest of the escaped criminals.”

The petitioners called for investigation and decisive action against the DPO and his team over the escape of the suspects identified as Ovakporaye Jobome (aka Rogers) and Debi.

The suspects were said to have been apprehended by  Aladja Security Crack Team, ASCT, on December 31, 2024, following increased criminal activities in the area.

Alongside two others, Kelvin Dukuye and Philip Faka, the suspects were handed over to Ovwian/Aladja Police Station, alongside ammunition, through the efforts of the Secretary of Udu Local Government Council, Andrew Gbise.

On January 4, officers from the police station informed the community that two of the suspects, Jobome and Debi had escaped from custody.

Aladja Community Council  emphasised that the two suspects were among the most dangerous criminals in the area.

They demanded their immediate re-arrest, as well as accountability from the police officers involved.

Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Evans Bipi,  said  no death was recorded in a collapsed three-storey building  in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The commissioner, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Emeka Idika, yesterday, said  the affected building under construction collapsed on Saturday, January 4.

According to him, the timely rescue mission by the ministry alongside other joint efforts averted the loss of lives, as victims were taken to the hospital for medical care.

The commissioner said no fewer than seven persons sustsined various degrees of injuries in the incident.

“It is unfortunate that we are beginning the year with this tragic incident, though no life was lost, this is the fourth building collapse in the state since I assumed office.

“Preliminary investigation at the scene of the incident showed that the building may have collapsed due to the use of substandard materials by the builder.

“Specifically, the use of 12mm rods for decking a building is a clear violation of construction standards, unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident, as similar cases in the state had been linked to the same cause.

”The property has been sealed pending investigation into the cause of the collapse,” the commissioner said.(NAN)
