Fidelity Bank has introduced an initiative tagged: “Bundles of Joy,” designed to support children with special needs and their families.

Divisional Head of Brand and Communications, Fidelity Bank, Dr Meksley Nwagboh, announced this in a statement in Lagos, yesterday.

Nwagboh said the initiative focused on creating inclusive spaces and activities for children between the ages of four and 11 with conditions such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.

He said the programme aims to address the challenges that families face in integrating their children into the society.

“This initiative underscores Fidelity Bank’s commitment to foster a more inclusive society for children with special needs.

“Through the ‘Bundles of Joy’ programme, we are providing a variety of engaging activities, including sensory rooms, outdoor play stations and obstacle courses, all tailored to help improve mobility and social skills.

“Additionally, we offer resources and information to help parents and caregivers better support their children,” he said.

According to him, families can participate by registering their children online at www.fidelitybank.ng/bundlesofjoy/.

He explained that parents are required to provide their name, child’s name and details about their child’s needs during the registration process.

Nwagboh, stated that accordingly, Fidelity Bank will reach out to the families to arrange a special outing for each child in January 2025.

He noted that the ‘Bundles of Joy’ programme is part of the bank’s broader commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, and its efforts to promote inclusivity for children with special needs.

Nwagboh added that the bank’s staff also supported Patrick Speech and Language Centre in Ikeja, Lagos State; a facility dedicated to the education and socio-economic development of children and young adults with autism recently.

He said their contributions include cash donation and gift items to enhance the learning experience of students at the centre.

“With the Bundles of Joy initiative, Fidelity Bank continues to demonstrate its dedication to create meaningful impact and foster a society where every child is given the opportunity to thrive,” he said. NAN

Kutigi Old Students Association, KUOSA, Class of 1984, has urged the Niger State government to take urgent action to restore public schools  to their former glory.

Head Boy of the set, Abubakar Shaba, made the call during the association’s second reunion meeting to mark its 40th graduation anniversary in Minna.

He also called on the state government to prioritise security to ensure conducive atmosphere in the educational sector.

Shaba appealed to the state government to provide adequate security in public schools and facilities, citing complaints of vandalism by hoodlums.

“We recall the good old days when schools in Niger State were in good shape.

“Unfortunately, over the years, the situation has deteriorated and the facilities have become a shadow of themselves due to poor maintenance culture,” he said.

He, however, paid tribute to 25 of their mates who have passed on, emphasising that welfare remains a topmost priority.

Also speaking,  the Assistant Head Boy of the 1984 set, Professor

Baba Alfa, decried the state of the school they left 40 years ago, saying there is the need to prioritise education as a fundamental pillar for national development.

“The school is begging for attention, investing in education today is crucial for shaping capable leaders for tomorrow.

“This reunion is aimed at uniting ourselves for a better tomorrow,” he said.

He also disclosed that the association had been supporting the families of their deceased mates.

Alfa said it operates a cooperative society where members can obtain loans, adding that it was part of efforts to support one another.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the reunion provided an opportunity for old students to reminisce about their time in school and discuss ways to give back to their alma mater. NAN

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Kwara State Command has disclosed that  929 people were arrested for hard drugs-related offences between January and December.

The State Commander, Mrs Fatima Popoola, who disclosed this yesterday during a news conference at the agency’s headquarters in Ilorin, said those arrested include 839 males and 90 females.

She explained that the command conducted a series of activities to suppress the supply and demand for hard drugs, adding that 2,642,103 kilograms were seized within the year in review.

“The seized drugs include cannabis, tramadol, diazepam, methamphetamine, cough syrup laced with codeine and cocaine/crack.

“Cannabis tops the list of seized drugs accounting for 1,455,529 kilograms, so the state is in dire need of intervention to solve the hydra-headed challenges of abuse and trafficking in cannabis.

“The mop-up of 1.5 tones of cannabis is a big saviour to parents and the good people of the state, if not, the destructive effects of the drugs could have been devastating,” she said.

The commander said 185 hard drug users were apprehended and referred to the drug demand reduction unit for brief interventions and were re-integrated with their families.

“In addition to the intervention efforts, 22 clients were admitted to our rehabilitation facility with other 17 who are non-residential, coming from their homes for counselling.

“The prosecution and legal service unit secured 133 convictions from the Federal High Court, Ilorin, which involved 123 males and 10 females, while more cases were charged but still pending.

“14 vehicles and 12 motorcycles used by the suspects in drug crimes and monies seized were forfeited to the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said.

Popoola said the command, in conjunction with the state government, had also started drug integrity tests titled “Drug Testing Policy”, in which 261 fresh students of Kwara State University, Malete, were tested.

“The vice chancellor; dean of student affairs and all the fresh students tested proved negative for hard drugs. Many thanks to the university for providing a favourable and suitable climate for the test.

“Other institutions of higher learning need to emulate such a policy that will help Nigeria achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3: “Health and wellbeing for all by 2030,” she said.

The commander, however, said the rehabilitation centre that could accommodate 200 people for treatment and counselling of drug addicts, had not been completed due to paucity of funds.

By Abdullateef Bamgbose

Katsina State governor, Malam Dikko Radda has lauded the appointment of two indigenes of the state to key positions at the Sokoto-Rima River Basin Development Authority, SRRBDA.

The governor commended the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer of Hillside Royal Suites, Badru Muntaka Ahmed, as the Executive Director of Agricultural Services.

Ahmed  is a seasoned banking executive with two decades of experience in agricultural financing and regional development.

An agriculture education graduate from Ahmadu Bello University, Ahmed  brings valuable expertise from his extensive career, including his recent role as Group Head, North III, where he successfully managed operations across seven northern states.

“His proven track record in managing complex regional operations and agricultural financing will be invaluable to the Authority’s mission,” the governor noted.

Radda equally lauded the appointment of Abubakar Ibrahim Dutsin-ma as Executive Director of Finance.

His experience as chairman of various ministerial committees, including the Committee on Sales of Fertilizer, Pesticides and Agrochemicals, coupled with his ongoing MBA in Agribusiness Management from Rome Business School, positions him uniquely for this role.

The governor, on behalf of the government and the people of Katsina, congratulated the new appointees and appreciated President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in the state’s human capital.

“We are confident that their service will contribute significantly to the agricultural transformation agenda of the federal government,” Radda said.

ACF Condemns Military’s Response To Sokoto Airstrike, Demands Probe

From Our Correspondent

Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has called on the federal government and the military high command to conduct a thorough investigation into the  bomb attack on Silame community in Sokoto State.

It would be recalled that a military jet allegedly bombed a village in Sokoto State, killing some residents, while others were seriously injured

However, the military authorities had denied the alleged bombing of the village.

Reacting in a statement in Kaduna yesterday, ACF’s National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, expressed concern over the military’s response to the attack,

“The bland response of a spokesperson of the military insisting that the attack was on a planned target was most insensitive.

“We recall that the Defence Headquarters had initially attempted to wish away the Tudun Biri tragedy only to later admit it was a mistake, as indeed proved so by its own internal investigations.

“It is not clear if indeed those responsible for Tudun Biri had been punished as ought to have been,” the forum said.

The statement equally described the attack, which occurred on Christmas Day, as “one mistake too many,” just as it called for a probe  and equally make the results public.

“We are deeply troubled and saddened by the Silame incident, as one far too many in the country.

“This was not an isolated incident, as the memories of similar attacks on Tudun Biri community, Kaduna State, about a year ago, and earlier in Adamawa and Nasarawa States, with their gruesome statistics of casualties, remain fresh in our memory.”

Agency Report

Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara has presented the 2025 budget proposal to a faction of the House of Assembly.

Fubara presented the N1.1 trillion budget yesterday to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led Assembly, which had earlier read the governor’s letter requesting permission to present the appropriation bill during plenary yesterday.

This marks Fubara’s second budget presentation since assuming office.

The governor had presented the 2024 state appropriation bill of N800 billion in 2023 to a four-man Assembly led by the Speaker, Edison Ehie.

He made the presentation amid the sudden demolition of parts of the  Assembly Complex.

This followed the defection of 27 members, led by the fractional Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The lawmakers had defected to APC, following the face-off between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Ehie eventually resigned from the Assembly, after which Fubara appointed him as Chief of Staff.

The budget, christened ‘Budget of Recovery,’ has N433.622 billion (62.06%) and N265.037 billion (37.94%) allocated to capital and recurrent expenditure respectively.

The governor said 62.06 per cent of the budget was allocated to capital development in order to jump start the economy and initiate massive infrastructural renewal across the state.

This, Aiyedatiwa said, was with a view to provide the needed foundation for desired recovery.

“I wish to reiterate that the main objective of the budget is to make life easy for our people.

“This objective is sacrosanct and non-negotiable.

“It is our administration’s collective resolve to continue to break new grounds that will definitely usher in sustained prosperity for the good people of Ondo State.

“It is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I stand before you today on the occasion of the signing of the 2025 Appropriation Bill into law.

“This is a critical moment for our administration, one that marks a significant step towards fulfilling the promises we made to the people of Ondo State during the electioneering processes,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa also appreciated the people for the unwavering trust and confidence in his administration as evidenced by the votes he got during the November 16 governorship election.

He noted that fiscal discipline, accountability, transparency and full disclosure would be strictly enforced in implementation of the 2025 budget.

Earlier, the speaker expressed happiness that the legislature was able to work and pass the budget within two weeks.

Court Orders Temporary Forfeiture Of $49,700 From Ex-REC

Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday ordered the temporary forfeiture of $49,700 allegedly recovered from a former Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for Sokoto State in the 2023 general elections, Dr Nura Ali.

Justice Emeka Nwite gave the order after Osuobeni Akponimisingha, counsel to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, moved an ex-parte motion to the effect.

While the Federal Republic of Nigeria was the applicant, Ali was the sole respondent in the motion ex-parte marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1846/2024.

The motion, dated December 20 and filed on December 24, was jointly filed by the ICPC and the Department of State Service, DSS,

The Director of Legal, Mr Usman Dauda,  signed the application on DSS behalf, Akponimisingha, Assistant Chief Legal Officer in ICPC, was part of the legal team that drafted the process.

The motion sought an order of the court temporarily forfeiting $49,700.00 from Ali during a search operation by the Federal Government of Nigeria, FRN, being property suspected to be proceeds of an unlawful activity.

It also sought an order directing the applicant i.e., the FRN, through the ICPC and the DSS to jointly conduct a thorough preliminary investigation into the alleged unlawful activities of Ali, in respect of the moveable property sought to be forfeited and make a report to the court within 90 days.

It sought an order directing the applicant i.e. FRN, through the ICPC and the DSS to deposit the $49,700.00 in an escrow account with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

The application equally sought an order directing the applicant to publish a notice in any national newspaper calling for persons whether human, juristic or artificial, having interest in the money to show cause why it should not be permanently forfeited to the federal government.

Giving nine grounds why the application should be granted, the applicant said the victim of the alleged crime was the Federal Government of Nigeria and innocent taxpayers which include judges of courts across the country.

It said the money was recovered during a search operation by operatives of the DSS at the residence of Ali.

“The alleged moveable property of $49,700.00 was bribe money received by Dr Ali when he was the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Sokoto State.

“The alleged moveable property is not the legitimate earning of Dr  Ali.

“The alleged moveable property is suspected to be proceed of crime,” it said.

The applicant argued that INEC does not pay its staff members with American Dollar.

It said the essence of the application was not to compulsorily acquire the alleged moveable property from the alleged owner, but to preserve the property from dissipation.

It said if the court grants the reliefs sought, interested persons including the alleged owner will be given opportunity to offer an explanation as to its legitimacy.

“Where cogent and verifiable explanation exists as to how the property was acquired, devoid of crime, the alleged owner or any other person having proprietary interest in the property will be allowed unrestricted possession.

“This application is not in conflict with the provisions of Sections 43 and 44 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which guarantees the rights of citizens of Nigeria to acquire and own immoveable and moveable properties in any part of Nigeria,” it said.

When the matter was called, Akponimisingha, who appeared for the FRN, told the court that the motion ex-parte prayed the court for four orders.

The lawyer said four exhibits were attached to the motion, including Exhibit DSS 1 to Exhibit DSS 4.

He urged the court to grant the application in the interest of justice.

He said a search was conducted in Ali’s residence in Kano and $49,700 was retrieved from the building.

He told the court that Ali allegedly said that $150, 000  was given to him by the former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, and Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

The ICPC lawyer, who alleged that Ali made this disclosure in his extra-judicial statement to the DSS, said the former REC also wrote a letter to the security outfit in a bid to reclaim the money.

He insisted that INEC does not pay his workers or RECs in dollars.

Also in the affidavit in support of the motion ex-parte deposed to by Iliya Markus, a litigation officer with ICPC, he noted that Akponimisingha informed him that he read through the case file and comprehended facts forming the allegations leading to the execution of a search warrant by operatives of the DSS at Ali’s residence.

Markus said the DSS received an intelligence report on Dr Ali on allegations of bribery received from stakeholders, i.e politicians in the course of his official duties as INEC REC in charge of Sokoto State.

He said the intelligence report was processed and residence of Ali in Kano was searched pursuant to a search warrant executed jointly by operatives of the ICPC and DSS.

“A copy of the search warrant is hereby attached and marked as exhibit DSS 1,” he said.

The officer said in the course of the execution of the search warrant, the sum of $47,000.00 was recovered from the house.

According to him, Dr Ali also made statement(s) with respect to the search on his residence and the subsequent recovery of the alleged $49,700.00.

“A copy of the said extra-judicial statement is hereby attached and marked as exhibit DSS 2,” he said.

He said invitation letters had been written to the persons he claimed gifted him the money.

“I also know as a fact that he did not report the gift to any law enforcement agency as required by extant laws of the land.

“Dr Ali had in the past written letters to the DSS requesting for release of the alleged $49,700.00 bribe money to him.

“Copies of the said letters are hereby attached and marked as exhibits DSS 3 & 4 respectively,” he said.

Markus said investigation is yet to be concluded, hence, the need for the 90 days application.

Justice Nwite, who noted that the application  was meritorious, granted the prayers.

The judge adjourned the matter until January 30,  2025 for report of compliance on the publication in the media and adjourned until March 31, 2025for hearing of the matter.(NAN)

2027: Ex-Atiku Campaign Coordinator Advises PDP Against Northern Presidential Candidate

A Lagos State PDP Chieftain and former member, Atiku Abubakar 2023 Presidential Campaign Committee, PCC, Dr Adetokunbo Pearse, has urged the party to ensure that a southerner emerges as its presidential candidate in 2027.

Pearse, the Head, Directorate of Documentation/Reporting, Atiku Abubakar PCC in Lagos State, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos, yesterday.

The State Coordinator of Support Groups for Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign, said a northern presidential candidate might not be good for the fortune of the party in the next presidential election.

“The national opinion now, the tendency, the feeling generally, is that the PDP should field a southerner for president in 2027

“That is the general feeling.

“We need somebody from the South to complete these four years, to complete the eight years of southern presidency, so that we can rescue Nigeria.

“That is the feeling of Nigerians now. Therefore, I will go with the idea that it is not strategic, it is not in our best interest to say we are supporting a northerner for president.”Pearse said.

The party chieftain also said that PDP didn’t need any merger with another political party to win.

He also ruled out the possibility of major opposition parties, including the Labour Party, New Nigeria People’s Party, and PDP, coming together to challenge the APC in 2027.

According to him, there has not been a history of successful political mergers in the country.

“An alliance in our politics, even abroad, you can see it’s very difficult because it is hard for the competing groups and leaders to give way for one or the other.

“It is not easy, it is not easy, and it is not even realistic. We tried it before and I have a lot of experience with this.

“It is not possible for PDP to go into any alliance in 2027. I personally think it is very unlikely, ”

According to him, LP and NNPP will not bring much to the table as both parties only produced one governor each in the last general elections.

Pearse said that PDP would win the 2027 presidential election ,given the number of governors and National Assembly members it has ,with a southern candidate.

“We just need to strengthen our party. We need to reach out to our members that have left the party.

“If they come back to the party, even if 60 per cent of them come back to the party, we win the next election.

“We win the next election because this last 2023 election was very close. We have 12 governors. We have about 40 per cent of the National Assembly, “he said.

According to him, PDP has 12 states already, all it needs to win are few states to dislodge APC.

Pearse said that all that PDP needed was to look out for party leaders “who had one astray “,especially to the Labour Party.

“They include our youth members who went to support Labour. And we have been doing that, by the way, since the end of the last election.

“We have been working on that, making sure we bring our people back, reaching out to them, talking to them. We are negotiating how we are going to do it.

“So, all we need to do is to work within our structures, negotiate, reconcile all our people and we will win the next election,” he said.

Pearse said that the former ruling party lost the 2023 general elections because the party went into the election with a divided house over zoning.

“The party went astray last time because they did not clarify the constitutional tenets that said that if the national chairman comes from the north, the presidential candidate cannot also come from the north.

“Since we normally elect the national chairman before the presidential candidate, it was expected that the national chairman (Dr Iyorchia Ayu) would gracefully step down once a northerner had emerged for president.Tbat did not happen.

“That was the beginning of our problems. It was a divided house that lost that election.

“The Presidential Candidate, Vice President Atiku Abubakar also didn’t do enough to solve the problem. We are not going to allow it to happen now,” he said.
