Oyo: Road Crashes Claimed 222 Lives In 2024 – FRSC

0

Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Oyo Sector Command  said yesterday that 222 people lost their lives in various road crashes in 2024.

The corps disclosed this in Ibadan in its end-of-the-year statistics signed by the Sector Commander, Mrs Rosemary Alo.

Alo said the figure indicated a reduction compared to the 270 deaths recorded in 2023.

According to her, the figures emanated from 304 road crashes recorded in 2024 and 495 crashes in 2023 respectively.

The sector commander noted that the statistics indicated that 779 people were injured in crashes in 2024 compared with 1,321 in 2023.

“1,795 people were involved in road crashes in 2024, while 2,935 people got involved in 2023.

“The number of crashed vehicles reduced to 412 in 2024 from 794 recorded in 2023,” she said.

The sector commander attributed the 2024 road traffic crash data reduction to aggressive stakeholders sensitisation programmes and enforcement exercises of the corps.

Alo added that the corps embarked on inclusive advocacy in 2024, sensitising passengers to always engage their rights to speak out when a driver drives recklessly.

“Initially, the focus has always been on drivers, but now, we are telling passengers to note that more people lose their lives in an accident than the driver.

“So, passengers must not be complacent when the driver fails to obey traffic rules,” she said.

She, however, urged drivers and commuters to always see their safety on the road as a joint responsibility to avoid loss of lives and property.

DSP Faults N1.7m Gratuity, N40,000 Pension

0

Esther Marcus who claims to be a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, has shared her experience of being underpaid after 35 years of service.

In a viral video, Marcus, who claimed to have joined the force at the age of 16, disclosed that after retiring in 2018, she received N1.7 million as her gratuity and was subsequently placed on a monthly pension of N40,000.

Voicing her frustration over what she called the “dirty contributory pension scheme,” she said, “My name is Esther Marcus, a retired DSP of the Nigeria Police Force. I retired on November 1, 2018. I just want to use myself as a case study. It is applicable to every other police officer under this dirty contributory pension scheme.

“After serving for 35 years, though I joined the Nigeria Police Force at a very young age, I escorted a friend; unfortunately, she was not selected, but I was chosen because I was tall, even though I was not yet 16 when I joined the police.

“When I retired in 2018, I waited for over a year before I was given N1.7 million after 35 years. Then, after waiting for another three months, they started paying me N40,000 as my monthly pension after giving me N1.7 million and that applies to every other policeman  who retired under this dirty scheme called the contributory pension scheme. That is what we’ve been going through.”

According to her, the federal government has ignored their pleas despite multiple public hearings on the issue.

Marcus added, “This struggle has been ongoing for over 10 years now because when I retired in 2018, there was a police retirees meeting. They started it in 2017 or thereabout and all our cries to the federal government have been met with deaf ears. It is not an insult, but that is the truth.

“They are aware of what we are going through. They have held about three or four public hearings on this case. But when personnel of the army was retiring, the DSS and other paramilitary forces — there was nothing like a public hearing.”

Marcus also highlighted what she saw as inequality within the police force, claiming that senior officers like Assistant Inspectors General, AIGs, Deputy Inspectors General, Digs, and the Inspector General, IGP, have been exempted from this pension scheme.

“The AIGs, DIGs and IGP have exempted themselves from this dirty contributory pension scheme. They only left commissioners of police downwards; they are the ones suffering it.

“The president cannot say he has not heard of this issue. He knows what is happening,” she said.

Marcus, determined to continue the fight for justice, vowed that  retired police officers would not stop advocating for their rights. “Let me tell you, we will never stop fighting because even those coming behind us, you cannot just see  injustice and not fight against it. It is not possible.

“How do you expect me to survive on N40,000? That is for me as a DSP. We have two-star officers and one-star officers who are receiving N28,000 and you want them to survive on this? What offence did the police commit to deserve this ill-treatment?

“We will not stop fighting. What we are planning now is to go and occupy the National Assembly and call CNN to cover the whole programme.”

She added that anyone opposing this reform is akin to a vulture, waiting for the vulnerable to perish.

“Anyone who is against us will not escape from this evil bondage. That person, that man, that group who does not want the police to be exempted from this evil— they are vultures because a vulture only waits for its victim to die, then it comes to feed. And that is what has been happening.”

Marcus  stated that it is unrealistic to expect police officers to stop engaging in corrupt practices when they know retirement will bring them into such financial circumstances.

She said, “You want the police, knowing fully well that when they retire, they are going into hell; you want them to stop corruption? They will continue collecting bribe. They will continue extorting. They will continue enriching themselves by whatever means they can.”

From London to Abuja: Mikel Arteta and Bunmi Haruna Share a Vision of Resilience and Tactical Innovation

0

Arsenal FC of London and Abuja-based FWC Champions FC share a compelling narrative of resilience and ambition. Both teams have faced challenges in their pursuit of titles: Arsenal has been without an EPL trophy for over two decades, while FWC FC has not secured a major title in nearly seven years.

In the wake of recent struggles, Arsenal boldly appointed former player Mikel Arteta in 2019, and in 2024, FWC FC took a decisive step by introducing the dynamic young coach Bunmi Haruna, a former assistant coach for Nigeria’s U-17 team. Both are passionate about their craft, with Arteta born in Spain in 1982 and Haruna just a year younger.

Reflecting on his first year, Haruna hailed it as both demanding and transformative. He successfully guided his team through an unbeaten league season, bringing them back into the conversation for top-tier contention. While they experienced a setback in the promotion playoff, losing on penalties, their captivating style of play has garnered a growing fanbase, especially in Jos. Additionally, the club celebrated its triumph in the FCT Pre-season Tournament, marking its first trophy in five years.

Looking ahead, FWC FC has set ambitious goals for itself, targeting promotion to the NNL and a state FA Cup victory by 2025. Haruna is dedicated to developing players for European opportunities and building a robust scouting network to help African talents make their mark in top-tier football. He envisions a future where players can secure positions with prestigious clubs like Barcelona and Chelsea by 2025.

“Our targets are clear: promotion to the NNL and the state FA Cup. I am committed to helping young talents in Africa achieve their dreams of playing for elite European clubs through my scouting network.

“I’m also among the few Nigeria-based coaches proficient in the latest video analysis software to dissect football games.

“I look forward to applying this expertise to continental teams and our national squad in the coming year,” said coach Bunmi Haruna.

Haruna expressed his admiration for Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and his innovative set-piece routines. Impressively, over half of FWC FC’s goals in the NLO 1 Super 8 came from set pieces—tactics he mastered alongside Nigeria’s top youth team coaches.

“Set pieces are vital in modern football. I watch numerous Arsenal matches—not to imitate but to understand the strategic principles behind their offensive and defensive play, particularly during set pieces.

“I have learned immensely from working alongside Nigeria’s youth team coaches, including Manu Garba, Nduka Ugbade, Emmanuel Amunike, and Haruna Ilerika. They emphasize the impact of set pieces, which can shift the game’s dynamics in your favor, even when the team isn’t at its best,” Haruna concluded confidently.

Obi’s A Doomsayer, Hellbent On Inciting Nigerians Against Tinubu — APC

0

All Progressives Congress, APC, said Peter Obi‘s New Year message is “misleading and an attempt to score cheap political points”.

Obi was the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 elections.

In his New Year message to Nigerians, Obi criticised President Bola Tinubu, while expressing grave concerns over institutional corruption, mismanagement, poverty, hardship and an escalating debt profile.

The former governor of Anambra State stated that corruption has been deeply entrenched in government and nepotism has become the norm on Tinubu’s watch.

He also demanded “vigorous, positive actions” from the administration to bring succour to Nigerians.

However, in a counter-statement on Thursday,  APC’s spokesperson, Felix Morka, said Obi’s assessment is at variance with all indicators that showed that the economy is rebounding across all sectors.

Morka accused Obi and members of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of making relentless attempts to incite public outrage against the Tinubu administration.

The APC accused Obi of portraying himself as “a leading doomsayer, omniscient and philosopher’s stone”, while failing to deliver “meaningful achievements during his eight-year tenure as governor in Anambra State.

“In reality, 18 months later, the economy, under President Tinubu’s administration has shown a steady record of progress.

“Despite these and other initial beneficial outcomes of ongoing reforms, the administration is doubling its efforts to ensure their fullest benefits for the transformation of our country.

“It is a thing of irony that Obi, who now arrogates to himself to be omniscient and philosopher’s stone, when it comes to our nation’s challenges, left no record of significant achievement, let alone transformation of any kind, in his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State.

“Like his co-travellers in the PDP, his obsessive pessimism and endless but futile effort to incite public outrage against the administration is borne out of the realisation that Tinubu is unwittingly cementing their political irrelevance by his visionary and full-throttle reform.

“Under the banner of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda,’ President Tinubu is dutifully turning our nation’s fortunes around. We urge Nigerians to remain confident of better days ahead,” the statement reads.

The ruling party added that the president’s goal is to reduce inflation from 34 percent to 15 percent in 2025.

“With the vigour in the administration’s war on corruption, evidenced by ongoing investigations and trial of well-heeled Nigerians, Obi’s pontification on the urgent need to tame corruption is a clear case of carrying coal to Newcastle,” the party added.

DANGER! Insecurity, Still  A Pain In The Neck

0

* Schools, farms, homes under siege

* Security personnel paying the ultimate price

* As troops record significant progress in 2024

Despite obvious efforts by security agencies led by the country’s military, cases of insecurity have continued, DAUDA ISAMAIL and MARYAM SANNI write.

On Tuesday, November 5 last year, at least 10 farmers including women from Wayam and Belu-Belu villages in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State were reportedly killed by bandits.

According to residents, six of the victims were beheaded and attackers went away with their heads.

They said many people also sustained bullet wounds and were being treated at a clinic in Kagara, the Headquarters of Rafi LGA.

Many were also kidnapped during the attack that happened around 5am when the victims were observing their early morning prayers, thus making residents of Wayam, Belu-Belu, Madaka and adjoining communities to flee to Kagara town, the Headquarters of Rafi LGA.

Recall that in September 2024, the Coalition of Shiroro Associations in Niger State had raised the alarm that bandits and terrorists have enslaved their people forcing them to farm for the bandits, and that they had also dispossessed the villagers of their harvests especially soya beans and maize just as several of the villagers have relocated to Gwada, Zumba, and Lakpma towns.

Raising the alarm in Minna, the coalition through its spokesman, Mallam Saidu Usman flanked by other executive members of the group, said the situation was climaxed by the recent killings of no fewer than 13 villagers at Mai-Gero in Manta ward of the local government.

“It is disheartening that inhabitants from the affected communities have been forced to abandon their farmlands and ancestral homes for fear of being kidnapped or killed”

In 2022, it was reported that bandits were occupying at least 12 of the 25 LGAs in the state.

That same year, the governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, had disclosed that not less than seven out of the 25 LGAs in the state were frequently under attack by bandits and terrorists.

This was even as the number of out-of-school children in the state had reached over 298,962, the highest in the North-central geo-political zone of the country.

The governor, who spoke at the flag-off of the North-central campaign against out-of-school children in Minna, the state capital, did not name the affected local governments but reports have it that Shiroro, Munya, Rafi, Magama, Mariga, Mashegu and Wushishi are some of the bandit-prone local governments in the state.

Bello said there is a nexus between the number of out-of-school children and insecurity that has plagued the seven local governments in the state, adding that:” When we talk about out-of-school children, the question begging for answer is why are there so many out-of-school children, obviously our size and current security situation plays a major role.

“To access some schools in Niger State, some pupils trek five to 10 kilometres to get to schools. With the security situation, if such a pupil is a girl, no parent will dare it especially when 10 to 11-year-old girls are being raped.”

The story isn’t different in other North Western states such as Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara and others. Even in Borno and other North Eastern states, news of terrorist attacks have continued with cases of bombings seemingly resurfacing.

It would be recalled that in August, bandits abducted over 150 persons and rustled over 1,000 cattle in some villages in Gobir Emirate of Sokoto State, Daily Trust can report.

The incident happened few days after the death in kidnappers’ den, of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, who was also the District Head of Gatawa.

The monarch was, on July 29, kidnapped alongside his son and six others on the Sokoto-Sabon Birni Road.  After that, a number of other attacks were also reported in the state.

A recent survey disclosed  that insecurity has led to closure of 113 schools in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States alone.

Observers, including Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, former Minister of State for Education, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission, and Cristian Mundrate, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, have therefore called for measures to secure schools to enable children to learn without hindrances.

Sadly, the South East is also bedevilled with widespread insecurity cases of “unknown gunmen” seem to be on a spree kidnapping, maiming, destroying and killing unarmed citizens and security operatives alike.

But despite perpetrators of insecurity being undeterred as they keep innocent citizens, schools, farms anr their homes under siege, while they make security agents pay the ultimate price, Nigeria’s military, Police and other security agencies have remained undeterred and unfazed as they recorded significant progress in making the country safe for citizens and residents too..

But despite these challenges, the millitary is no doubt prepared and recorded significant successes throughout 2024.

According to the Nigerian Defence Headquarters,  about  8,034 terrorists were neutralized, 11,623 apprehended and rescued 6,376 hostages.

Director Defense Media Operations Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this while briefing defense correspondents on the successes achieve by the by Armed Forces of Nigeria from January to December, 2024.

He noted that troops have since the beginning of the year been confronted by different threats in five active theatres of operations across the country, which include NE, NW, NC, SS and SE.

According to him, “Troops aggression across the various theatres of Operation since the beginning of the year culminated in 8,034 neutralised terrorists, 11,623 arrest and 6,376 rescued hostages. Furthermore, troops recovered 8,216 weapons, 211,459 ammunition and denied the oil theft of an estimated sum over #57 bn (N57,052,218,551.00) only.

“The breakdown of the recoveries are as follows: 4,053 AK47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, 731 dane guns and 240 pump action guns. Others are; 120,247 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 41,515 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 5,373 cartridges, 1,940 assorted arms and 25,664 assorted ammunitions.

“Additionally, troops recovered: 53,101,430 litres of stolen crude oil, 9,179,181 litres of illegally refined AGO and  90,595 litres of DPK. Others are; 156,095 litres of PMS amongst other items.

“Overall, the military is keeping up the pressure through ongoing operations in the various theatres across the country. The military is through these  operations, increasingly creating conditions in which terrorist can not carry out  acts of terror or harm citizens.”

He emphasised that the armed forces is constantly examining ways to improve the effectiveness of its operations and  guarantee the safety of citizens.

“On the whole, the armed forces is constantly examining ways to improve the effectiveness of its operations and  guarantee the safety of citizens.  Relatedly, operations are on an upward trajectory to winning the war,” he concluded.
