LP National Caretaker Committee Mere Political Jobbers, Seeking Relevance – Ekiti Chairman

0

Labour Party in Ekiti State has described the Nenadi Usman-led national executive caretaker committee as mere political jobbers, seeking relevance in the party.

The chairman of the party in the state, Mr Odunayo Okunade, stated this while addressing journalists at the end of the State Working Committee ,SWC, meeting in Ado-Ekiti on Monday.

He said that the SWC appraised, among other crisis rocking the party, the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, which set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal.

Okunade said that the caretaker committee was unknown to the party’s internal guides, saying, “they are mischievous people that had grown wings after the ground breaking achievements of the party’s 2023 Presidential election.”

He said the Supreme Court judgment had put a stop to all wranglings and insinuations that had been clogs in the wheel of the party’s progress.

Okunade, however, congratulated the National Chairman, Julius Abure, for his well deserved victory at the Supreme Court, urging him to passionately forgive all his distractors in the interest of the party.

He called on the national leader and his team to work towards the quick reconciliation and reunion of various factions in the party ahead of future elections.

“Labour Party is our home and together we shall coast to victory”, he stated.

Okunade, therefore, called on all warring factions to sheath their swords and allow the party to focus on its efforts at rescuing the country from the present socio-economic crisis.

Prominent member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Abdullahi Hashim, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for appointing Bayo Ojulari as the Group Chief Executive Officer, GCEO, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, and Ahmadu Kida as Non Executive Chairman of the company’s Board.

He added that the appointment of Ojulari, Kida and other members of the board is a step in the right direction, saying the duo, who are engineers with distinction, now have the opportunity to transform the national firm into a profitable venture.

Hashim, who is also an alumnus of the prestigious Harvard University and a member of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, stated this during an interview with journalists in Abuja, yesterday.

He commended Tinubu for ensuring that individuals with vast engineering, technical and leadership experience manage the affairs of NNPCL, saying the new leadership would usher in a transformative era for the national firm, fostering efficiency, transparency and innovation in the oil and gas sector.

Hashim said, “It is refreshing to note that individuals with vast engineering, technical and leadership experience are now at the helm of the NNPCL. I wish to say with a high sense of responsibility that the appointments align with global best practices in energy governance.

“The strategic appointments are pivotal to achieving sustainable energy security, infrastructural growth and economic development.”

Ojulari, who hails from Kwara State, is an alumnus of the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, SPE Nigeria Council, while Kida, who comes from Borno State, holds an engineering degree from ABU and a postgraduate diploma in petroleum engineering from the French Petroleum Institute.

Speaking on the competence of Ojulari and Kida to turnaround the fortunes of NNPCL, Hashim said he is confident that his two professional colleagues will live up to expectations and achieve the targets set for them by President Tinubu.

He said, “Ojulari and Kida are very competent for the job. They are active players in the oil industry with the requisite experience. They know what is at stake and the targets set for them by President Tinubu. I am confident that the duo and other members of the management team will meet the targets and take the NNPCL to greater heights.

“We all know that the oil industry is volatile and quite challenging. Former GCEO, Mele Kyari and his management team have done their best. Ojulari, Kida and the new management team are now in charge and will use their expertise and wide knowledge of the oil industry to take us forward in our quest to maximise the advantages of being one of the world’s producers of crude oil.

“They will surely ensure good results from NNPCL’s refineries in Port Harcourt and Warri, and the timely completion of the rehabilitation of Kaduna Refinery. The tasks are enormous, but they have the capacity to deliver on the set objectives.

“It is important to note that Ojulari has distinguished himself as the right man for the job, having piloted affairs as the Managing Director of SNEPCo and General Manager, Deepwater. He also served on the board of Shell Petroleum Development Company, overseeing onshore and offshore petroleum engineering, technical integration of development, well engineering and project engineering.

“Do not forget that Kida’s experience spanned over 32 years in the oil and gas industry. He also joined Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited, now Total Exploration & Production Nigeria, TEPNG, in 1985. In the first 15 years of his career at Total, he played key roles in many company projects, including OBITE Gas Plant Project (Onshore Nigeria), AMENAM/KPONO Phase 1 Project (Offshore Nigeria), and the OML 58 Upgrade Project located Onshore Nigeria.”

Hashim disclosed that with their wealth of experience, the stage is now set for NNPCL to witness dynamic growth for the positive development of the country.

Tinubu, had during the appointments of Ojulari and Kida, handed out an immediate action plan to the new management board to conduct a strategic portfolio review of NNPCL-operated and joint venture assets to ensure alignment with value maximisation objectives.

The president tasked the new NNPCL management team to envision increasing the country’s investment to $30 billion by 2027 and $60 billion by 2030.

A statement by his spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga, also outlined Tinubu’s expectations from Ojulari and Kida, saying “Since 2023, the Tinubu administration has implemented oil sector reforms to attract investments.

“Last year, NNPCL reported $17 billion in new investments within the sector. The administration now envisions increasing the investment to $30 billion by 2027 and $60 billion by 2030.

“The Tinubu administration targets raising oil production to two million barrels daily by 2027 and three million daily by 2030. Concurrently, government wants gas production jacked to 8 billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 10 billion cubic feet by 2030.

“Furthermore, President Tinubu expects the new board to elevate NNPCL’s share of crude oil refining output to 200,000 barrels by 2027 and reach 500,000 by 2030,” the statement added.

No Court Confirmed Aniebonam’s Leadership – Ondo NNPP

0

New Nigeria People’s Party ,NNPP, in Ondo State, says no court has confirmed Dr Boniface Aniebonam as the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, and Dr Agbo Major, as National Chairman.

The News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, reports that a Federal Court in Abuja on Thursday dismissed a suit filed by a faction of the party challenging the leadership of the duo.

Justice M.A. Hassan ruled that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the suit, affirming that internal party issues such as leadership and membership were beyond judicial intervention.

Mr Peter Olagookun, the state Chairman of NNPP, in an interview with NAN on Monday in Akure, said the duo could not lay claim to the leadership of the party since the court did not address the merit of the case.

“What happened at the court that day was very clear; a Federal High Court, Abuja, through Justice M. A. Hassan never made any comments on the merits of the case before it, as it stated that it has no jurisdiction.

“So, the court declined jurisdiction in the matter.

“Aniebonam and his team are no longer members of our party, the NNPP; they have since been expelled from the party.

“This group of people just go on the media to misinform and mislead Nigerians about the court judgment.

“So, we urged the Nigerians to ignore them when they lay claim to the leadership of our party”, he said.

According to him, the court did not make any pronouncement on conferring legitimacy on any so-called board of trustees.

Olagookun, who is also the Chairman of State Chairmen Forum, South-West Zone, added that the court declined jurisdiction on the case before it on the ground that it was an internal party affairs.

“Go to INEC portal to check who is the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party ,NNPP, you will see that Dr Ahmed Ajuji is the authentic National Chairman of the party and his executives are authentic.

“Also, check the logo that they are using, you will see that it is not the authentic logo of the party.

“Nigerians and the media houses should stop taking them seriously but keep faith with the New Nigeria People’s Party NNPP under the leadership of Dr Ahmed Ajuji as the National Chairman and Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as the National Leader of the Party.

“NNPP is the only the formidable oppositions party in the country that is ready to dislodge APC and restore the lost glory of the country,” he said.

…promises to build a bigger Centre next year

In support of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s significant investment in the welfare of children with disabilities in Ekiti State, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has donated two mini-buses, two motorcycles, and 25 wheelchairs to the Therapy Centre for Children with Disabilities in Ado-Ekiti.

Senator Bamidele made the donation during a visit to the Therapy Centre alongside Governor Oyebanji on Friday. The items were received by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, who also guided the Governor and the Senator around the facility.

Senator Bamidele praised Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to the welfare of children with disabilities, noting that the therapy centre is the first state-owned facility of its kind in the country. He promised to facilitate the construction of a bigger  therapy centre as part of his constituency project next year.

Expressing his satisfaction with the cordial relationship between Governor Oyebanji and members of the Ekiti State caucus of the National Assembly, Senator Bamidele assured the Governor that caucus members would continue to support his people-oriented programmes and policies aimed at improving the living standards of Ekiti people.

“Let me begin by thanking His Excellency, our Governor, for bringing me here to see what’s happening. I also want to thank the state government for conceptualizing this initiative. I extend my gratitude to the workers, the volunteer parents, the professionals, and all the interveners here. I am glad to be here, and I believe we need to attract all the encouragement we can from the Federal Government.

“The Governor has made a specific request. I always describe our relationship as a partnership that is working for the people of our state. By the grace of God, I will prioritize this as my number one constituency project for 2026. From my budget of N1.5 billion for construction, I will take it on, and by God’s grace, we will commence work here next year. In the meantime, let us see how we can maintain the current facilities and explore corporate social responsibility interventions until the new building is ready”.

Governor Oyebanji had earlier asked Senator Bamidele to facilitate the construction of a bigger structure that could accommodate all the children simultaneously, allowing them to attend the Centre daily.

The Governor stated, “Distinguished Senator, the reason I brought you here is that we currently have 70 children, but due to a lack of space, we must attend to them in batches. Premium Trust Bank has renovated this facility for us, and with our limited resources, we have been able to keep it operating. I brought you here to see the need for a bigger structure that can accommodate more children at once.”

In her remarks, Princess Adetoun Agboola affirmed that the Centre serves children with cerebral palsy, autism, and other disabilities, particularly those who cannot fit into traditional schools due to the severity of their conditions. She commended Governor Oyebanji for providing a facility where children requiring physical, occupational, and speech therapy can receive assistance until they can return to school.

Mrs Agboola noted that the Centre had designed a timetable allowing no more than 20 children to be transported from their homes each day using the bus provided by the Governor, as their population has grown to around 70. She also expressed gratitude to the Senate Leader for the donated vehicles, motorcycles, and wheelchairs, stating that these will greatly enhance their work at the Centre.

Cyber Attacks: CJN Bemoans Vulnerabilities Of Judiciary, Classified Data

0

By Anthony Ochela, Abuja

Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN,  Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said the judiciary has become a major focus of cyber attacks as a result of sensitive case files, personal information and classified government data at its disposal.

Justice Kekere-Ekun stated this yesterday at the opening session of a hybrid national workshop for Information and Communication Technology, ICT, staff of various courts in the country, organised by the National Judicial Institute, NJI, in Abuja.

The CJN warned that with the adoption of digital innovations to enhance the efficiency, accessibility and transparency of court processes, “we must also recognise the risks associated with online systems, particularly cyber threats and data breaches.”

She stressed that strong cybersecurity frameworks must be implemented to safeguard judicial data from unauthorised access, hacking and corruption.

According to her, “Judicial ICT staff must be trained in cyber security’s best practices, encryption technologies and secure data storage solutions.

“Protecting the integrity of court records is paramount, as any compromise could have far-reaching legal and national security implications.

“It is important to acknowledge that the National Judicial Council has taken various proactive steps to ensure that the judiciary keeps pace with technological advancements.

“One of such initiatives is the Judiciary Information Technology Policy, JITPO, which has provided a framework for the deployment and utilisation of ICT in our courts.

“This policy is currently undergoing revision to incorporate emerging digital trends, address identified gaps and ensure its continued relevance in enhancing the efficiency and security of judicial processes.

“The ongoing efforts to refine JITPO underscore the judiciary’s commitment to continuous improvement in the adoption of technology for justice delivery.

“Digital transformation in the judiciary cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires collaborative partnership between the judiciary, legal practitioners, technology experts, policymakers and international organisations.”

Highlighting some of technology’s advantages in the administration of justice, the CJN decried that most courtrooms  have limited access to reliable internet connectivity.

She insisted that to bridge this gap, the judiciary must prioritise capacity-building initiatives that equip judicial officers and ICT personnel with the requisite skills to operate digital systems effectively.

Kekere-Ekun added that training workshops such as this serves as a cornerstone for continuous learning, ensuring that all stakeholders are adequately prepared to navigate the digital future of the judiciary.

In his welcome address, the Administrator of the NJI, Justice Salisu Abdullahi said the workshop with the theme, ‘The Digital Evolution of Judicial Systems: Technology, Access and Efficiency,’ underscored the role of digital technologies in modernising and strengthening the judicial system.

Justice Abdullahi emphasised that the aim of the annual workshop is to equip court personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to keep pace with technological advancements and to ensure that they can effectively leverage technology in their roles, thus contributing to a more efficient and modem judicial system.

LP NEC Passes Vote Of Confidence In Abure-led NWC

LP

National Executive Council ,NEC, of Labour Party has passed a vote of confidence in the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee.

This was part of the resolutions at the party’s NEC meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

In a communique read out by the National Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar-Farouk,, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court decision which, it said, had returned the power, glory and supremacy of political parties.

“The court asserted the supremacy of the party over its internal affairs and that leadership of a political party is not for any court to decide, as it is a no-go area for the court, and so the court did not sack the NWC leadership.

“Accordingly, NEC in session reaffirmed the Nnewi National Convention held on the 27th of March, 2024 that produced the current National Working Committee ,NWC, members, under the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure.

“NEC-in-session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling for unauthorised stakeholders’ meeting and usurping the powers of NEC.

“He , Otti, also conducted LGA election, using another political party.

“The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalise the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

“His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected personality and this is no longer acceptable”, the communique read.

The LP NEC said that it would not hesitate to discipline the governor, in line with Article 19 of the party’s constitution”.

It also threatened to discipline any member who violated the party’s constitution, regardless of how big or powerful such individuals might be.

“NEC-in-session, in exercise of its duties, hereby cautions the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace unity and integrity of the party, as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalty if found culpable”, it said.

The NEC equally condemned the activities of the party’s House of Representatives caucus leader, Hon. Victor Ogene, saying that he had consequently been replaced with Mr Ben Etanabene.

On the Nov. 8 governorship election in Anambra and the 2027 general elections, Julius Abure said that the party was working to resolve the challenges.

He, however, said that the party would only field candidates who would be ready to promote its programmes.

Abure also said that the party was not opposed to coalition with other parties that would promote good governance.

“What the party is against is subversive activities that promote divisions in the party”, he said.

NAN reports that the meeting was attended by members of NWC, national officers of the party, state chairmen and secretaries, stakeholders and co-opted NEC members.

A group of APC Governors under the auspices of the Progressive Governors’ Forum ,PGF, on Monday visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.

The governors stated that the APC was growing stronger as the largest political party in Nigeria, insisting that it would remain stable and stronger even ahead of the 2027 electioneering period.

Speaking to newsmen after a closed-door meeting with Buhari, Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the forum, said their visit signified a show of unity and strength within the APC.

He said this lenting period and after the Ramadan, and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, they deemed it necessary to pay a homage to the former president who served eight years under the APC.

Describing Buhari as a father to the APC in politics, Uzodimma said they were pleased to meet him in good health and sound mind.

Uzodimma expressed their gratitude to Buhari for his leadership and credited him with producing a cohesive machinery that made the party retain power.

He highlighted the party’s growth in strength and capacity to govern, attributing the success to the party’s ability to hold consultations and put the nation above individual interests.

He emphasised the importance of internal cohesion and strong leadership in achieving electoral success.

The host, Gov. Uba Sani, described Buhari as a father, leader and a statesman.

Sani said not only politicians, but ordinary citizens go to pay Buhari homage at his residence.

World Health Day: FETHI Board Chair Highlights Importance Of Maternal, Newborn Health

0

As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the 2025 World Health Day, the Chairman, Governing Board of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Tobi Bankole has described  quality maternal and newborn health as the foundation for strong families and a prosperous nation.

Bankole, in a statement issued on Monday, emphasised that the health of mothers and babies is not only vital for individuals, but also for the entire nation’s future.

Besides, he noted that it is an urgent issue that demands collective efforts to ensure that every woman and child has access to quality healthcare during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

He pointed out that globally, approximately 300,000 women die every year due to complications related to pregnancy or childbirth, while over two million newborns die or are stillborn. These tragic deaths are largely preventable, yet they persist, with one life lost every seven seconds due to inadequate care.

According to him, “Every loss represents a life that could have been saved with timely medical intervention. This is why we must act now.”

The statement also acknowledged the significant strides made by the Nigerian government under the leadership of President Bola  Tinubu.

Bankole commended the administration’s ongoing efforts to revitalise primary healthcare centers which have significantly improved access to essential services for millions of Nigerians. Increased budgetary allocation to health, particularly maternal and child health initiatives, along with expanded health insurance coverage, have been key areas of focus for  government.

According to him, the administration has prioritised the recruitment and training of healthcare workers, particularly midwives and community health officers, to ensure that even the most rural and underserved communities have access to skilled care.

The FETHI Board chair also pointed to improvements in healthcare infrastructure and the provision of modern medical equipment in federal health institutions as critical to strengthening the overall capacity of the health system.

The chairman of the Governing Board urged Nigerians to prioritise their health, particularly during pregnancy and the early years of a child’s life.

He called on women to attend regular antenatal and postnatal checkups, and for families to support one another in seeking timely medical attention.

Bankole  emphasized the need for Nigeria’s health system to evolve, addressing not only obstetric complications, but also mental health, non-communicable diseases and other reproductive health challenges.

“We must raise awareness about maternal and newborn health, advocate for increased investment in healthcare and support frontline health workers who are integral to our healthcare system,” he said.

AljazirahNigeria reports that the theme of this year’s World Health Day “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” is the first theme dedicated to maternal and newborn health since 2005.

World Health Day: WHO Urges Action On Maternal Deaths, Healthy Living

0

World Health Organisation’s, WHO, Representative to Nigeria, Dr Walter Mulombo, has advised Nigerians to cultivate the habit of regular exercise, emphasising its importance in promoting health and well-being.

Mulombo made the remark during the “Walk the Talk” awareness walk in Abuja, on Monday to commemorate the World Health Day, with the theme “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.”

The event, he noted, was not only to mark the establishment of WHO, but also to raise awareness about maternal mortality and the need for collective efforts to address global health challenges.

Mulombo pointed out that although the “Walk the Talk” initiative is relatively new, it presents an opportunity for  government, civil society and communities to collaborate and significantly reduce health issues like maternal mortality before 2030.

He highlighted WHO’s ongoing support to the Nigerian government, especially through initiatives like  MAMI (Maternal Mortality Innovation and Initiatives) programme, which aims to reduce deaths among mothers and newborns.

He also stressed the importance of addressing unacceptable maternal mortality rates and the need for increased physical activity to maintain good health.

“The MAMI initiative focuses on strengthening healthcare services and community engagement, particularly in the most affected local government areas.”

Mulombo emphasised that WHO would continue to work closely with the Nigerian government, healthcare workers and other partners to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

The Ministry of Health’s commitment to improve the health of women and children was also highlighted by  the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr Kamil Shoretire.

He explained that the ministry is focused on promoting healthy beginnings for children and ensuring that women have access to quality antenatal care and skilled birth attendants.

Shoretire emphasised the importance of family planning services, that are vital for empowering women and ensuring the well-being of both mothers and their children.

He highlighted these efforts as part of the broader health strategy to support a progressive and healthier nation.

Shoretire also outlined the Nigerian Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which focuses on improving governance, health outcomes and the local production of medical supplies to reduce reliance on imports.

He noted the efforts of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, in responding to public health threats, such as the recent meningitis outbreak, with the support of international partners like Gavi, WHO and UNICEF.

According to him, with the current local government autonomy, local governments are expected to play an active role in improving primary health care, ensuring that more people have healthy beginnings for a hopeful future. NAN
