…promises to build a bigger Centre next year

In support of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s significant investment in the welfare of children with disabilities in Ekiti State, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has donated two mini-buses, two motorcycles, and 25 wheelchairs to the Therapy Centre for Children with Disabilities in Ado-Ekiti.

Senator Bamidele made the donation during a visit to the Therapy Centre alongside Governor Oyebanji on Friday. The items were received by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, Princess Adetoun Agboola, who also guided the Governor and the Senator around the facility.

Senator Bamidele praised Governor Oyebanji’s commitment to the welfare of children with disabilities, noting that the therapy centre is the first state-owned facility of its kind in the country. He promised to facilitate the construction of a bigger  therapy centre as part of his constituency project next year.

Expressing his satisfaction with the cordial relationship between Governor Oyebanji and members of the Ekiti State caucus of the National Assembly, Senator Bamidele assured the Governor that caucus members would continue to support his people-oriented programmes and policies aimed at improving the living standards of Ekiti people.

“Let me begin by thanking His Excellency, our Governor, for bringing me here to see what’s happening. I also want to thank the state government for conceptualizing this initiative. I extend my gratitude to the workers, the volunteer parents, the professionals, and all the interveners here. I am glad to be here, and I believe we need to attract all the encouragement we can from the Federal Government.

“The Governor has made a specific request. I always describe our relationship as a partnership that is working for the people of our state. By the grace of God, I will prioritize this as my number one constituency project for 2026. From my budget of N1.5 billion for construction, I will take it on, and by God’s grace, we will commence work here next year. In the meantime, let us see how we can maintain the current facilities and explore corporate social responsibility interventions until the new building is ready”.

Governor Oyebanji had earlier asked Senator Bamidele to facilitate the construction of a bigger structure that could accommodate all the children simultaneously, allowing them to attend the Centre daily.

The Governor stated, “Distinguished Senator, the reason I brought you here is that we currently have 70 children, but due to a lack of space, we must attend to them in batches. Premium Trust Bank has renovated this facility for us, and with our limited resources, we have been able to keep it operating. I brought you here to see the need for a bigger structure that can accommodate more children at once.”

In her remarks, Princess Adetoun Agboola affirmed that the Centre serves children with cerebral palsy, autism, and other disabilities, particularly those who cannot fit into traditional schools due to the severity of their conditions. She commended Governor Oyebanji for providing a facility where children requiring physical, occupational, and speech therapy can receive assistance until they can return to school.

Mrs Agboola noted that the Centre had designed a timetable allowing no more than 20 children to be transported from their homes each day using the bus provided by the Governor, as their population has grown to around 70. She also expressed gratitude to the Senate Leader for the donated vehicles, motorcycles, and wheelchairs, stating that these will greatly enhance their work at the Centre.

Cyber Attacks: CJN Bemoans Vulnerabilities Of Judiciary, Classified Data

By Anthony Ochela, Abuja

Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN,  Kudirat Kekere-Ekun said the judiciary has become a major focus of cyber attacks as a result of sensitive case files, personal information and classified government data at its disposal.

Justice Kekere-Ekun stated this yesterday at the opening session of a hybrid national workshop for Information and Communication Technology, ICT, staff of various courts in the country, organised by the National Judicial Institute, NJI, in Abuja.

The CJN warned that with the adoption of digital innovations to enhance the efficiency, accessibility and transparency of court processes, “we must also recognise the risks associated with online systems, particularly cyber threats and data breaches.”

She stressed that strong cybersecurity frameworks must be implemented to safeguard judicial data from unauthorised access, hacking and corruption.

According to her, “Judicial ICT staff must be trained in cyber security’s best practices, encryption technologies and secure data storage solutions.

“Protecting the integrity of court records is paramount, as any compromise could have far-reaching legal and national security implications.

“It is important to acknowledge that the National Judicial Council has taken various proactive steps to ensure that the judiciary keeps pace with technological advancements.

“One of such initiatives is the Judiciary Information Technology Policy, JITPO, which has provided a framework for the deployment and utilisation of ICT in our courts.

“This policy is currently undergoing revision to incorporate emerging digital trends, address identified gaps and ensure its continued relevance in enhancing the efficiency and security of judicial processes.

“The ongoing efforts to refine JITPO underscore the judiciary’s commitment to continuous improvement in the adoption of technology for justice delivery.

“Digital transformation in the judiciary cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires collaborative partnership between the judiciary, legal practitioners, technology experts, policymakers and international organisations.”

Highlighting some of technology’s advantages in the administration of justice, the CJN decried that most courtrooms  have limited access to reliable internet connectivity.

She insisted that to bridge this gap, the judiciary must prioritise capacity-building initiatives that equip judicial officers and ICT personnel with the requisite skills to operate digital systems effectively.

Kekere-Ekun added that training workshops such as this serves as a cornerstone for continuous learning, ensuring that all stakeholders are adequately prepared to navigate the digital future of the judiciary.

In his welcome address, the Administrator of the NJI, Justice Salisu Abdullahi said the workshop with the theme, ‘The Digital Evolution of Judicial Systems: Technology, Access and Efficiency,’ underscored the role of digital technologies in modernising and strengthening the judicial system.

Justice Abdullahi emphasised that the aim of the annual workshop is to equip court personnel with the necessary skills and knowledge to keep pace with technological advancements and to ensure that they can effectively leverage technology in their roles, thus contributing to a more efficient and modem judicial system.

National Executive Council ,NEC, of Labour Party has passed a vote of confidence in the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee.

This was part of the resolutions at the party’s NEC meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

In a communique read out by the National Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar-Farouk,, the NEC expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court decision which, it said, had returned the power, glory and supremacy of political parties.

“The court asserted the supremacy of the party over its internal affairs and that leadership of a political party is not for any court to decide, as it is a no-go area for the court, and so the court did not sack the NWC leadership.

“Accordingly, NEC in session reaffirmed the Nnewi National Convention held on the 27th of March, 2024 that produced the current National Working Committee ,NWC, members, under the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure.

“NEC-in-session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling for unauthorised stakeholders’ meeting and usurping the powers of NEC.

“He , Otti, also conducted LGA election, using another political party.

“The governor has also intensified his effort to factionalise the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

“His anti-party activities are unbecoming of a highly respected personality and this is no longer acceptable”, the communique read.

The LP NEC said that it would not hesitate to discipline the governor, in line with Article 19 of the party’s constitution”.

It also threatened to discipline any member who violated the party’s constitution, regardless of how big or powerful such individuals might be.

“NEC-in-session, in exercise of its duties, hereby cautions the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace unity and integrity of the party, as the NEC will not hesitate to issue stiffer penalty if found culpable”, it said.

The NEC equally condemned the activities of the party’s House of Representatives caucus leader, Hon. Victor Ogene, saying that he had consequently been replaced with Mr Ben Etanabene.

On the Nov. 8 governorship election in Anambra and the 2027 general elections, Julius Abure said that the party was working to resolve the challenges.

He, however, said that the party would only field candidates who would be ready to promote its programmes.

Abure also said that the party was not opposed to coalition with other parties that would promote good governance.

“What the party is against is subversive activities that promote divisions in the party”, he said.

NAN reports that the meeting was attended by members of NWC, national officers of the party, state chairmen and secretaries, stakeholders and co-opted NEC members.

As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the 2025 World Health Day, the Chairman, Governing Board of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Tobi Bankole has described  quality maternal and newborn health as the foundation for strong families and a prosperous nation.

Bankole, in a statement issued on Monday, emphasised that the health of mothers and babies is not only vital for individuals, but also for the entire nation’s future.

Besides, he noted that it is an urgent issue that demands collective efforts to ensure that every woman and child has access to quality healthcare during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

He pointed out that globally, approximately 300,000 women die every year due to complications related to pregnancy or childbirth, while over two million newborns die or are stillborn. These tragic deaths are largely preventable, yet they persist, with one life lost every seven seconds due to inadequate care.

According to him, “Every loss represents a life that could have been saved with timely medical intervention. This is why we must act now.”

The statement also acknowledged the significant strides made by the Nigerian government under the leadership of President Bola  Tinubu.

Bankole commended the administration’s ongoing efforts to revitalise primary healthcare centers which have significantly improved access to essential services for millions of Nigerians. Increased budgetary allocation to health, particularly maternal and child health initiatives, along with expanded health insurance coverage, have been key areas of focus for  government.

According to him, the administration has prioritised the recruitment and training of healthcare workers, particularly midwives and community health officers, to ensure that even the most rural and underserved communities have access to skilled care.

The FETHI Board chair also pointed to improvements in healthcare infrastructure and the provision of modern medical equipment in federal health institutions as critical to strengthening the overall capacity of the health system.

The chairman of the Governing Board urged Nigerians to prioritise their health, particularly during pregnancy and the early years of a child’s life.

He called on women to attend regular antenatal and postnatal checkups, and for families to support one another in seeking timely medical attention.

Bankole  emphasized the need for Nigeria’s health system to evolve, addressing not only obstetric complications, but also mental health, non-communicable diseases and other reproductive health challenges.

“We must raise awareness about maternal and newborn health, advocate for increased investment in healthcare and support frontline health workers who are integral to our healthcare system,” he said.

AljazirahNigeria reports that the theme of this year’s World Health Day “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” is the first theme dedicated to maternal and newborn health since 2005.

The event, he noted, was not only to mark the establishment of WHO, but also to raise awareness about maternal mortality and the need for collective efforts to address global health challenges.

Mulombo pointed out that although the “Walk the Talk” initiative is relatively new, it presents an opportunity for  government, civil society and communities to collaborate and significantly reduce health issues like maternal mortality before 2030.

He highlighted WHO’s ongoing support to the Nigerian government, especially through initiatives like  MAMI (Maternal Mortality Innovation and Initiatives) programme, which aims to reduce deaths among mothers and newborns.

He also stressed the importance of addressing unacceptable maternal mortality rates and the need for increased physical activity to maintain good health.

“The MAMI initiative focuses on strengthening healthcare services and community engagement, particularly in the most affected local government areas.”

Mulombo emphasised that WHO would continue to work closely with the Nigerian government, healthcare workers and other partners to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

The Ministry of Health’s commitment to improve the health of women and children was also highlighted by  the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr Kamil Shoretire.

He explained that the ministry is focused on promoting healthy beginnings for children and ensuring that women have access to quality antenatal care and skilled birth attendants.

Shoretire emphasised the importance of family planning services, that are vital for empowering women and ensuring the well-being of both mothers and their children.

He highlighted these efforts as part of the broader health strategy to support a progressive and healthier nation.

Shoretire also outlined the Nigerian Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which focuses on improving governance, health outcomes and the local production of medical supplies to reduce reliance on imports.

He noted the efforts of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, in responding to public health threats, such as the recent meningitis outbreak, with the support of international partners like Gavi, WHO and UNICEF.

According to him, with the current local government autonomy, local governments are expected to play an active role in improving primary health care, ensuring that more people have healthy beginnings for a hopeful future. NAN

Ohanaeze Youth Council Rejects  Omokri’s Ambassadorial Nomination

0

From CHARLES ONYEKWERE

Youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has rejected the ambassadorial nomination of a former presidential spokesman, Reno Omokri, by President Bola Tinubu.

Ohanaeze said if Nigeria’s security agencies clear Omokri to represent the country, it implies that his allegations of a drug-related issue involving Tinubu were substantiated.

The group in a statement issued Monday by its National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, noted that to represent Nigeria in a diplomatic capacity, one must be an individual whose words and statements are credible and factual.

It noted that Omokri representing Nigeria as a diplomat would mean a strong endorsement, institutionalisation and approval of his statements about President  Tinubu.

“The presidency should know that clearing  Omokri implies and confirms the perception of Nigerians that the  Tinubu administration lacks integrity and credibility.

“His criticism of the Nigerian government and certain politicians seems to be motivated by personal political gain rather than a commitment to strengthen democracy in Nigeria,” the statement said.
