Gas Flaring: NGOs Rally Agencies In Community-Driven Energy  Project

0

From INIOBONG SUNDAY, Uyo,

Towards a safer Niger Delta, a civil society organisation committed to poverty and environmental risk reduction has expressed concerns over the widespread gas flaring, methane emissions, environmental degradation and carbon pollution in the Niger Delta.

Towards this end, the Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risk Reduction, NAPPDRR, has rallied global agencies, including Global Greengrants Fund, GGF, and Oilwatch Africa, OA, in a multi-million dollar energy innovations project in Akwa Ibom State oil communities.

Launching the scheme during a town hall meeting on community-led energy innovation in Esit Eket Local Government Area  at the weekend,  the Executive Director, NAPPDRR, Emem Edoho explained that the intervention became necessary to mitigate the negative multiplier effects of fossil fuels on humans and the environment.

“Nigeria’s energy landscape is complex, with significant reliance on fossil fuels. However, with the launch of the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan, NETP, in 2022, our country has committed to achieving net – zero emissions by 2060. This plan aims to tackle energy poverty and the climate crisis simultaneously, promoting renewal energy, improving energy access and enhancing energy efficiency.

“Here in Akwa Ibom State, we are committed to alligning our efforts with the state climate action plan.  NAPPDRR is proud to contribute to this effort through our innovative climate action project, Green The Future, GTF. This project was made possible with the generous support of Global Greengrants Fund and Oilwatch Africa. It focuses on mitigating the impact of methane emissions and other greenhouse emissions in oil and gas host communities.

“The GTF project is a community-led initiative that empowers local communities to take ownership of their energy future. By promoting sustainable energy solutions, improving energy efficiency and supporting climate – resilient development, we can reduce the environmental and heath impact of fossil fuel extraction and promote more sustainable future for all,” he said.

In the same vein, the Programme Officer of NAPPDRR, Lady Helen Eyo, who spoke on ‘Green the Future: Accelerating Decarbonisation and Community Resilience in the Hostcom Project,’ said the initiative focused on  oil and gas host communities in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Nsikak Ekong, represented by the Director of Petroleum Resources Directorate, Engr Anietie Emah, and the Head of Government and Community Relations at Frontier Oil Ltd, Mr Samuel Atara, among other participants, commended  NAPPDRR for the initiative and expressed their support for the project, even as they stressed the need for such initiative to be launched across all the affected communities.

The Chairman of Esit Eket Local Government Area, Uduak  Ikot, who was represented by the Supervisor for Environment, Ime Jonah, lauded the commitment of non-state actors in the promotion of energy innovations to free the environment of pollution and other irritants with attendant maternal and infant mortalities in the oil communities.

Papers from resources persons drawn from other NGOs, including  the Executive Director, Centre for Advocacy, Good Governance and Ecological Response, Mfon Gabriel and Edidiong Dickson of Policy Alert, PA, and others painted a gloomy picture of oil communities devastated by gas pollution, methane emissions and oil spill in the Niger Delta region, and called for a holistic action plan to mitigate the scourge.

Kogi Central: Constituents Sue Akpabio, Senate Over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension

By Uche Onyeali

Some constituents of Kogi Central Senatorial District have dragged Senate President Godswil Akpabio and the Senate before the Federal High Court in Abuja over the suspension of their elected representative, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, from the National Assembly.

The appellants, including Ovavu Iliyasu, Isah Otini, Onivehu Amoto, Isah Mediant, Ogunmola Samuel, Umar Oyiza, Megida Sadiq, Siyaka Akinlade, Michael Ademola and Ananyi Omeiza, in the suit filed on their behalf by the law firm of Femi Falana & Co, are seeking, among other declarations, that their right to political participation under Article 13(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights had been violated.

The appellants argued that the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months unlawfully denies them representation in the National Assembly.

The litigants maintained that only the electorate has the authority to determine their representative’s tenure and that the respondents, which include Senate authorities, acted beyond their powers in suspending her.

They  asked the court to set aside the suspension and compel the Senate to immediately restore all of  Akpoti-Uduaghan ‘s rights and privileges.

They are requesting an injunction restraining the respondents from taking  further actions that may infringe on their constitutional right to representation.

Part of their prayers include “an injunction restraining the respondents whether by themselves, their servants, agents, officers or otherwise howsoever from carrying out  acts or omissions which may result in the contravention or likely contravention of the fundamental rights of the applicants.”

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Lagos State Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, was at the weekend  installed as Obalefun -Agbaye of Obatala Worshippers Worldwide in Badagry.

News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the title was conferred on Rhodes-Vivour by a group of traditional religion worshippers ,Obatala worshippers, led by Oba Adedokun Ayinla, the Alase Oosa Agbaye Worldwide.

NAN reports that “Obatala” is one of the revered deities in Yorubaland, depicted as a wise and compassionate god by worshippers.

Speaking during the installation in Ikoga area of Badagry, Ayinla said leaders of traditional religion worshippers in Yorubaland agreed to confer the politician with the title.

According to him, the Akran of Badagry, Menu Toyi 1, gave his permission to confer Rhodes-Vivour with the title with a crown and staff of office.

Ayinla ,however, said Obalefun Agbaye only made Rhodes-Vivour a leader among Obatala worshippers and that he could only wear his crown during religious activities and ceremonies.

“But listen carefully, if you are religious leader or a chief, you should know that the traditional ruler of the town is superior to you. He is the custodian of our customs and traditions.

“You have no power or right to put on your crown and staff of office to meet him in his palace and see him. It is wrong.

“This is just a crown among traditional worshippers. Some of us have many crowns, but we only wear them during religious activities or when we celebrate traditional festivals.

“This is just a traditional religious crown and must be used on occasion like this or during religious festivals”, he said.

Ayinla and other religious leaders prayed for Rhodes-Vivour after which they handed him the staff of office

The excited Labour Party chieftain then danced round the venue of the installation to the admiration of religious leaders and other Obatala worshipers present.

Rhodes-Vivour and wife before installation

Speaking ,Rhodes-Vivour thanked the religious leaders and other worshippers for the title, promising to live up to expectations.

NAN reports that the former governorship candidate was accompanied to the installation ceremony by his father, his wife, friends and some Labour Party members.

Presidency Disowns 2027 Campaign Billboards, Urges Immediate Halt

0

Presidency has disowned a growing wave of 2027 campaign billboards promoting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, describing them as unauthorized and illegal.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Presidency expressed dismay over the billboards, which have been spotted in cities like Abuja and Kano, some featuring images of the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

While acknowledging the enthusiasm and loyalty of supporters, the Presidency emphasized that President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima have not sanctioned any 2027 campaign efforts, adding that such actions contravene the nation’s electoral laws.

“The electoral law that guides the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections”, the statement noted. “Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages”.

The Presidency warned individuals and groups behind the campaign materials to desist immediately, stressing that the President remains focused on delivering his administration’s agenda, which includes economic revitalization, infrastructural renewal, human capital development, social investment, and national security.

“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC, sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television”, Onanuga stated.

He added that when the time is right and INEC signals the start of the electoral process, President Tinubu will communicate his intentions directly to Nigerians.

Zamfara Fire Outbreaks: CSOs Slam Governor Dauda For Inaction

0

A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) under the banner of Zamfara Concerned Citizens has accused the Zamfara State Government, led by Governor Dauda Lawal, of failing to safeguard lives and properties amid a series of devastating fire outbreaks across the state.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, the group’s convener, Mansur Abubakar, described the situation in Gusau and the state’s 14 local government areas (LGAs) as “dire and life-threatening,” attributing the recurring fires to the government’s apparent negligence.

“The response from the Zamfara State Government and its Fire Service has been shamefully absent,” Abubakar said.

The criticism follows a recent blaze on Wednesday at approximately 1:45 PM, which razed the home of Malam Abu Nusaiba in Gusau.

According to the statement, desperate calls to the Zamfara State Fire Service were met with excuses: every station contacted reported that their vehicles were either broken down or lacked fuel.

“The result? Irreparable loss of property and untold suffering,” the statement read.

The coalition highlighted that this was not an isolated incident. Similar fires have recently struck the Gusau Central Market and Kauran Namoda LGA, with no emergency response forthcoming in either case.

“Where is the leadership? Where is the emergency preparedness?”

Abubakar questioned, accusing Governor Lawal’s administration of showing “an alarming lack of readiness and commitment” to protecting citizens.

The CSOs contrasted the current administration’s record with that of former Governor Bello Matawalle (2019–2023), whom they praised for equipping every LGA with operational fire service units, including functioning fire engines, alarms, and well-supported personnel.

“The difference between then and now is glaring—and heartbreaking,” the statement noted.

Under Lawal’s leadership, the group alleged, the state’s fire services have deteriorated, with no working fire engines, emergency fuel supplies, or sense of urgency.

The coalition issued a series of demands, calling for the immediate deployment of well-equipped firefighting teams across all LGAs, the repair and refuelling of fire service vehicles, and the provision of modern firefighting equipment and alarms.

They also urged the government to revive the welfare and training of fire service personnel and provide relief and compensation to victims of recent incidents.

“The primary duty of any government is the protection of its citizens. Right now, that duty is being dangerously neglected,” Abubakar warned.

“We cannot and will not remain silent as this continues. The people of Zamfara deserve better—before more lives, properties, and futures are lost.”

Anambra Governorship: I’m Not Afraid Of Incumbency Factor – Moghalu

0

Labour Party ,LP, candidate for Nov. 8 Anambra governorship election, Dr George Moghalu, says he is not afraid of incumbency factor in the election.

Moghalu stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria ,NAN, yesterday in Abuja.

“The election will be determined by the people and the will of God, not the party or incumbency factor.

“People with incumbency power had been defeated before and many times over, so, what is the big deal? It is about the people.

“It is also about us going to market ourselves to the people. It is about the people assessing our antecedents.

“It is about the people looking at the promises we have made, whether we can be dependent on and they can deduce this from our antecedents.

“It is about the people and the will of God concerning each and everyone of us. One person at any given time will be the governor of the state”, he said.

According to him, power belongs to God and the people, adding that God gives it to whosoever He wishes.

The immediate past Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority ,NIWA, who expressed the confidence that LP had high chances of winning the governorship race, said he was ready and prepared for the election.

“I am fully prepared. I have not been more prepared than now”, he said.

On how he was able to win the governorship ticket, considering the short time within which he joined Labour Party, Moghalu attributed it to the will of God and the wishes of the people of the state.

“I give all the glory to God Almighty because I have always said that power belongs to God and He gives it to whom He pleases at His own time.

“It looks like this is my time and God’s will came to prevail. I also want to thank the delegates for having confidence in me, placing their future in my hands for guidance.

“So, for me, I give all the glory to God. There is nothing special about me. But it is the people who decided, out of their free volition, to give me the chance”, he said.

Asked if he would have won the All Progressives Congress ,APC, governorship ticket if he had remained in the party, Moghalu said: “I would have still contested but I am not God who sees tomorrow”.

He commended the leadership of Labour Party, the delegates and the people of Anambra for entrusting him with the mandate to run for the governorship election, pledging that he would not disappoint them.

“Like I told them at the primary election that I would justify this confidence; that I would not let you down. Hold me to what I said. So, I’m still repeating that appeal to them.

“To the Anambra people, trust me, give me an opportunity to serve you. You will not regret it.

“Place your confidence in me; I will justify it. At the end of the day, I will come back to you to say ‘thank you’. What I will do for the state will endear me to you”,  he assured.
