Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Lere Oyewumi, yesterday extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected South-West Zonal Executives of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP. The election took place at the prestigious Emeritus Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, located opposite the UCH Main Gate in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The well-attended congress drew together top-tier stakeholders of the party, including His Excellency Senator Ademola Jackson Adeleke, Executive Governor of Osun State; His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde, Executive Governor of Oyo State; members of the PDP Board of Trustees; the National Working Committee ,NWC; fellow Senators; members of the House of Representatives; members of the National Executive Committee ,NEC; and dedicated delegates from across the South-West geopolitical zone. The event marks a significant stride in the ongoing effort to reposition and strengthen the PDP in the region.

Senator Oyewumi urged the newly elected zonal leadership to prioritize unity, inclusivity, and cohesion within the South-West chapter of the PDP. He emphasized that these elements are crucial to advancing the party’s electoral fortunes and ensuring its relevance in the national political landscape. “We must begin the rebuilding process from this point onward. Our strength lies in our unity, our focus, and our ability to genuinely connect with the grassroots. The South-West must once again become a formidable stronghold for the PDP”, he stated.

Senator Oyewumi noted that the significance of the congress goes beyond the election of new executives. It represents a clarion call for brotherhood, solidarity, and a renewed commitment to the ideals of the party, both at home and abroad. “We must put behind us the divisions of the past and embrace a future anchored on collaboration and purpose. The time has come to refocus our attention on building strong, efficient administrative structures that can support electoral successes. This will enable us not only to retain our current states but also to expand our reach across all six geopolitical zones of the country”, he remarked.

Senator Oyewumi also commended Governor Adeleke and Governor Makinde for their leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication to the growth of the party in the region. He described their presence and roles as “a demonstration of selflessness and deep responsibility”.

In his closing remarks, the Senator called on all PDP members to remain steadfast in upholding the party’s values and to work collectively towards achieving enduring political victories. “This congress is more than just an internal electoral exercise; it’s a foundational step toward a more vibrant and united PDP. Let us march forward with a shared sense of purpose and continue to lead with vision, capacity, and integrity”, he concluded.

The enthusiastic turnout and participation of prominent South-West leaders at the event underscored a collective commitment to revitalizing the party’s influence in the region. Their unity signals renewed momentum as the PDP prepares for future political engagements. “What we are witnessing today is a reawakening”, Senator Oyewumi declared. “Together, we will write a bold and victorious new chapter for the PDP in the South-West”.

2027 Presidency: I’m Focused On Mandate Given To Me By Oyo State People – Makinde

From Damola Adeloye, Ibadan

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that he will not be distracted by the clamour in some quarters for him to run for Presidency in 2027.

The Governor noted that he would not allow anyone to set an agenda for him, adding that as of now, he remained committed to delivering infrastructure, policies and programmes that will make lives more meaningful for the people, which is the mandate given to him by the people of Oyo State.

Makinde stated this on Tuesday, while appearing on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

He maintained that though he has the capacity to occupy the highest position in the land, he would put into consideration what the Nigerian people want, what his political party wants and what would be in the best interest of the people.

He equally added that if his political journey ends with being governor of Oyo State, he would cherish the opportunity given to him by the people of the state.

The Governor maintained that his administration has been able to build road infrastructure and put in place adequate security across the state, noting that these are the enablers for the agribusiness success and economic expansion being witnessed in the state.

He made a reference to his recent trip to France, stating that the trip was to finalise the deal to have a Food Wholesale Market established in Ijaiye by the Rungis International, describing the project and the Special Agro-Processing Zones springing up in Eruwa and Ijaiye as some of the gains of the agribusiness policy of the administration.

“For us, we don’t enjoy going to Abuja every month to get a handout as monthly allocation. We have all it takes. People say that Africa will get out of poverty when we take on the world, but for us in Oyo State, our approach is that what we need to take on the world is almost what we need for import substitution.

“We are building infrastructure that will allow us to have foreign exchange in agriculture and agribusiness. The infrastructure we are building are the enablers for agribusiness. We started out by connecting Ibadan, which is the major consumption hub, to Oke Ogun, the major agriculture hub. We also connected Oyo to Oke Ogun and then we connected Ogbomoso, which is the second largest consumption hub, to Oke Ogun.

“Through infrastructure, we have not only enabled agribusiness, we have halted rural-urban migration. You know that I hosted the President of Sierra Leone in Fashola Agribusiness Hub recently and he said to me that he once spoke with the President of China, asking him how he was feeding 1.6 billion people and the Chinese President told him, infrastructure. That if you build infrastructure, private people would come to build farms and industries. That is what we have done in Oyo State”.

Also speaking about the meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, Governors’ Forum ,PDPGF, held in Ibadan on Sunday and Monday, Governor Makinde said the far-reaching decisions taken by the governors were taken in consultation with all necessary organs of the party.

He maintained that those rushing to drop PDP’s name in coalition talks were doing so when a majority of party members and party organs had no clue about what they were trying to do, what is in the coalition for them and whether the coalition agenda was about power-mongering or whether it is in the best interest of Nigerians.

“These are the issues you need to put into consideration before jumping into the fray, saying you are leading a coalition without carrying the critical people in your party along”, he stressed.

When asked who would succeed him as governor in 2027, the governor declared that he has enough good people on his team and that he would not leave the state in a limbo.

He said: “We have enough good people on our team in Oyo State. But I will not just leave Oyo State people hanging. Before I came into office, I put in place a Roadmap for Accelerated Development, 2019-2023 and when we were re-elected in 2023, we put in the Roadmap for Sustainable Development, 2023-2027.

“We have achieved many things. But when people ask me, you have done so much in terms of building roads and all that, are these your legacy, I always tell them those are not the things I want to be remembered for. I want to be remembered for creating a major shift in terms of creating institutions to support good governance in Oyo State.

“Before I leave office, I will prepare a Roadmap for Continued Development of Oyo State and, whoever the Oyo State people choose in 2027, I will hand it over to him and I would have done my own bit”.

The Governor also spoke on the issue of zoning, noting that since politics is a game of numbers, the discussion on the issue will be a continuous one.

He added, however, that the governorship would leave Ibadan when there is a governor who has performed excellently and has earned the trust of the people and who decides to convince people in that direction.

Gbenga-Hashim Decries Plateau, Benue, Ondo Killings

0

Former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has condemned the renewed wave of violence in Plateau and Ondo States, describing the persistent killings as a tragic reflection of Nigeria’s failing security architecture.

In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, Hashim questioned the continued bloodshed across the country and called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s approach to security.

“How many more innocent lives must be lost before real and lasting solutions are implemented? When will this bloodletting stop”, Hashim queried.

He accused the Federal Government of failing to exercise full control over the Nation’s security situation, while simultaneously resisting calls for the devolution of critical security responsibilities to State and Local Governments.

According to him, the centralised nature of Nigeria’s security structure has become overstretched and ineffective in responding swiftly to threats at the grassroots.

Hashim also identified poor cooperation with neighbouring countries as a major contributor to the current insecurity, citing the free inflow of arms and bandits across the country’s borders as a lingering threat.

“Bandits and terrorists now operate with calculated ease, simply relocating from areas of intensified Federal Military presence to regions with low or delayed security attention”, he said, noting a pattern of violence shifting from the North East, to the North West, and now to the North Central.

Describing the trend as an “adaptive insurgency”, Hashim stressed that the Nation must adopt a decentralised and intelligence driven security strategy that includes full collaboration with subnational governments and regional partners.

“The people deserve peace, and the time to act is now”, he concluded.

Hashim warned that what is happening in Nigeria is far more complex than isolated communal disputes. “What is going on in Nigeria are not isolated communal disputes but coordinated rural and semi-urban guerrilla warfare by a motley alliance of forces of terror and banditry that have chosen the entire Northern Nigeria as their theatre of operation”, he said.

Dr Hashim also condoled the families of the victims who lost their lives. “Our heart goes to the families and communities who lost their loved ones and those who are wounded, we pray for strength for them and speedy recovery”, he said.

Meanwhile, Police sources revealed that ‎ preliminary investigations and operations in response to these attacks have led to the arrest of two suspects in connection with the killings in Bokkos, who are currently assisting with the ongoing investigation

Gbenga Hashim, a notable businessman and politician, was a presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections and has remained an influential voice in national policy debates.

According to him, “Our people are suffering because of estimated billing”.

Insecurity: Zamfara Elders Blast Dauda For Hijacking FG’s Credit

0

Zamfara State Elders Forum has criticised Governor Dauda Lawal Dare for attempting to take credit for recent security improvements in the region, accusing him of political opportunism and failing to deliver on campaign promises.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Zamfara Elders Forum, through its secretary Dr Alhaji Umaru Yusuf Tsafe, described the governor’s actions as “misleading” and a display of “inconsistency and opportunism.”

The group alleged that Lawal had reneged on his 2023 election pledge to end insecurity in Zamfara within a month, instead shifting blame to the federal government when the situation worsened under his leadership.

“Governor Lawal rode into office on the back of promises he has completely failed to deliver,” Tsafe said, noting that the governor had previously campaigned by blaming his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, for the state’s insecurity.

“Once in office, he claimed he lacked the resources to act, exposing his lack of foresight and leadership.”

The elders further accused Lawal of attempting to claim credit for recent security breakthroughs, which they attributed to the efforts, of President Bola Ahmad Tinubu,
National Security Adviser malam Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, and CDS musa

“Governor Lawal neither provided meaningful support nor initiated these operations,” the statement read, labelling his actions as “political desperation.”

The forum urged the people of Zamfara to demand accountability from their leaders, stressing that the state deserves “a governor who is honest, consistent, and genuinely committed to their safety.”

They condemned Lawal’s approach as exploitative, accusing him of seeking to benefit politically from the achievements of others.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated a high-level committee tasked with facilitating the conduct of the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census, with a directive to submit an interim report within three weeks.

The President, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, at the inauguration held Wednesday at the State House in Abuja, emphasized that a credible, technology-driven census is critical for accurate national planning and development across all sectors, including healthcare, education, security, and the economy.

In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu described the census as vital for effective policy formulation and resource allocation, noting that the last census was conducted in 2006—nearly two decades ago—when Nigeria’s population was recorded at 140,431,790, comprising 71,345,488 males and 69,086,302 females.

“The enumeration has to be technology-driven with biometrics and digitalisation. Things have changed since the last time that we conducted this exercise,” Tinubu stated. “Work with all relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. This ministry has to take charge of this because you cannot budget if you do not know how many we are.”

President Tinubu also underscored the need for strategic funding, urging the committee to explore both domestic and international sources to finance the exercise.

The newly inaugurated Presidential Committee on Population and Housing Census is chaired by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, who pledged to meet the President’s three-week deadline for the interim report.

Bagudu, reflecting on Tinubu’s guidance during the 2023 ministerial retreat, said the committee would adopt creative strategies to execute its mandate despite prevailing economic challenges.

“Despite global economic headwinds, Nigeria under President Tinubu is making steady progress. We are seeing improvements in foreign exchange stability and overall economic growth,” Bagudu noted, assuring that the committee will present feasible solutions for funding the census and ensuring its credibility.

Also speaking, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the role of accurate data in national planning, stressing that a credible census lays the foundation for such data.

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra, who will serve as Secretary to the committee, disclosed that preliminary preparations for the census have already commenced in partnership with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and other key stakeholders.

According to Kwarra, the commission is currently identifying priority areas and requirements necessary for the President to take a well-informed decision on the timing and implementation of the census. He reaffirmed the NPC’s commitment to delivering a transparent, technology-based enumeration exercise that supports inclusive development and planning.

Why I Visit Project Sites Regularly – Wike

0

By Ismaila Jimoh, Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike has said that the reason why he regularly carried out inspections on all the ongoing projects within the territory was to ensure various contractors delivered quality jobs in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Tinubu Administration.

Wike stated this on Wednesday while carrying out inspections on some ongoing road projects in Abuja.

According to him: “We cannot just sit in offices to say that jobs are going. it is indeed part of our job to go and see for ourselves, and to look at the quality of jobs.

“Yesterday, we went to the Mabushi bus terminal, we did correct certain things we saw. If you don’t go out, then you may be embarrassed by the day of the commission, because that is not what you expected, and by that time it will be too late.

“So, inspection is part of the assignment to make sure that the job is not only done, but done very, very well.”

Key ongoing projects inspected by the Minister includes the Giri District Road Network, the 16-kilometer Inner Northern Expressway (INEX) with a 15 span bridge connecting the Idu Industrial area to the Kubwa/Zuba expressway, the Collector Road CN8 from the Moshood Abiola Way to Dakibiyu in Jabi District and the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal Complex also in Jabi District.

He disclosed that the Giri District roads project and the INEX, being handled by Levante Construction Limited and Salini Nigeria Limited, respectively, are both expected to be completed by the end of May, while the Court of Appeal complex is slated for commissioning in September 2025.

According to him “I went to the road opening up the Giri District, which is where you have the EFCC academy and the University of Abuja. We believe that our work there will significantly open up the district. The contractor, Levante, has assured us that the project will be handed over by the end of May.

“We also visited the Inner Northern Expressway (INEX) being handled by Salini. We believe that by the grace of God, Salini has promised that they will hand over the project by the end of May. We also inspected the Road CN8 in Jabi District as well as the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal complex, also in Jabi.”

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of work done in all the project sites visited.

Dan Orbih To Obaseki: You Killed PDP In Edo

0

FROM IKHILI EBALU, BENIN CITY

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Orbih, yesterday accused former Edo State Governor,  Mr. Godwin Obaseki of allegedly killing the party with support from some disgruntled PDP members in Edo State.

Orbih was instrumental to Obaseki’s emergence as governor of the Edo State during Obaseki’s re-election in 2020 as the Edo state PDP chairman who championed the former governor campaign across the 192 wards of the state.

Orbih made the remarks during the official opening of a new state Secretariat, he personally donated to Edo State chapter of the party saying this modest contribution to the party is an effort to rebuild the PDP in the state and in the South South.

He added that the state chapter of the party lacks a functional secretariat for the discharge of its duties and decried the destruction done to the PDP by Ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki and his cronies under the previous government.

Orbih lamented that the party under his watch as National Vice Chairman, South-South, cannot be homeless, hence the donation to Edo State chapter of the PDP.

The National Vice Chairman, South-South stated that Obaseki killed and buried the PDP in Edo and must account for the huge money he pledged to deliver some many projects including the GeleGele Seaport,  which hitherto, he noted has not been achieved.

He called on genuine members of the party to be united in the struggle to rejig the party, noting that the PDP is a formidable party despite its internal problems.

He equally dismissed the claims that Ex-governor of Rivers State and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike was responsible for the PDP’s woes.

Orbih said that the PDP in Edo State is determined to collaborate and work with only  genuine and loyal party members who have the interest of the PDP at heart.

He alleged that the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, comprising,  Tony Aziegbemi,  PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman,  Henry Duke Tenebe and Chris Nehikhare  , Acting Secretary and Publicity Secretary respectively were  incapable of delivering the party to victory as they actively played a role with Ex-governor Godwin Obaseki in destroying the party in Edo.

“Obaseki should come back and tell us what he did with the money that he was to use to develop GeleGele Seaport.

PDP is a formidable party.  We have our own problems.  But you must know that Nyesom Wike is not our problem”, Orbih said.

Orhih also appreciated Edo State Governor,  Monday Okpebholo, whom he described as a man of humility and honour.

He said Okpebholo has shown great humility and respect for the traditional institution in the state and has repositioned the state for greater development.

“On the 17th of January, our former state chairman, Honorable Tony Aziegbemi was chased out of our office along airport road.

And from January to this very day, the PDP in Edo State  has no State Secretariat. Many leaders, party members of our great party in the Edo state have been reaching out to me.It was arising from their calls that I promised that I was going to donate an office to the Edo PDP”, Orbih said..

Orbih continued,  “As we mark this historic event, I want to send a very loud message to Jarret Tenebe, the APC chairman in Edo. He should not come here. If he comes here, he must be prepared to declare for PDP.

“Let me use this opportunity to say that I have observed with disappointment, certain characters, masquerading as acting PDP chairman and acting Secretary  as well as Publicity Secretary and PDP committee members of the party.

“Today, I want to publicly declare that those who collaborated with Godwin Obaseki to kill the PDP in the Edo State can not be caretakers. They are undertakers.

“Undertakers cannot take care of anything. They are those who buried the party in the Edo state.

“I want to use this event to tell them to stay away. It is time for us to rebuild, reconstruct, and reposition Edo State PDP.

“Obaseki came into our party to destroyed our party. And this character, some of them, they were calling him all sort of names like ‘Wake and See’,  ‘Ematon’ and ‘Technocrat’.

“I, Chief Dan Orbih, the national vice-chairman, South-south, hereby challenge Obaseki to come back to Edo state and give an account of his stewardship”, Orbih said.

Present at the event were some PDP leaders, including Dr. Wilson Imogan, an Ex-official of the PDP South South Zone, and Barr. Nosa Ogieva, Chairman PDP Edo South Senatorial District.

Expressing appreciation to

National Vice Chairman, South-South for the new secretariat,  Ogieva said Orbih has laid the foundation for a formidable PDP in Edo state.

He described the donation as  a gesture that has removed shame, hopelessness, and homelessness from the Edo PDP,  assuring that the PDP would be back to power again in the state.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has called on African youths to take the centre stage in promoting peaceful and credible elections across the continent.

Yakubu made the call while delivering a lecture at the Civil Service University in Banjul, Republic of The Gambia, where he was a guest of the institution on Tuesday.

Yakubu, being honoured by the Civil Service University in Banjul, The Gambia, after delivering the lecture.

He urged young people to actively engage in the electoral process with a positive mindset, shun electoral malpractices, and uphold democratic values.

The lecture, entitled “Democracy and Peaceful Elections in West Africa”, was delivered to students of International Affairs and Diplomacy as well as Peace and Conflict Studies.

Yakubu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, released highlight of his lecture in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

Highlighting the indispensable role of youths in electoral processes, Yakubu noted that elections in Africa could not succeed without their participation.

“Young people form the backbone of election duty staff”, he said, adding that Election Management Bodies, EMBs, often lacked sufficient permanent staff and therefore relied heavily on youths as temporary or ad- hoc personnel.

He emphasised that beyond logistics and staffing, youths also constituted the largest segment of the voting population.

“Before the elections, they are involved in voter registration one of the most critical stages of the electoral cycle.

“It is a duty that must be undertaken with sincerity, patriotism, and a sense of responsibility”, he stated.

Yakubu urged youths to be upright and law-abiding, saying: “If you want peaceful elections, play your part for God and country.

“Do the right thing. Obey the laws and regulations. That’s how we make every vote count”.

He also drew attention to the role of youths as political party agents.

He warned against misrepresenting facts or feeding political stakeholders with false information, acts that could trigger violence and erode public trust in the electoral process.

Yakubu, cautioned against the spread of fake news, especially during election periods.

“Do not be among the fake news merchants. If it’s not verified, don’t share it. As citizen reporters, you have a duty to report elections truthfully and responsibly”, he advised.

The INEC Chairman further encouraged young Africans not to lose faith in democracy or withdraw from civic engagement, saying, “This is the system we have chosen.

“It is ours to nurture, defend, and improve. Every young African must play a role in deepening and strengthening democratic institutions”.
