0

By Blessing Otobong-gabriel

The Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has expressed unwavering support for the governments of President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Maikalangu disclosed this on thursday at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, during APC FCT Unity Rally, that his stance underscores his commitment to collaborating with the federal government to deliver democratic dividends to AMAC residents.

He said: “Today marks a defining moment in my political journey. I stand before you not just as your Chairman, but as your servant-leader who remains committed to the progress, peace, and prosperity of our great Area Council.

“After careful consultations with stakeholders, community leaders, youths and women groups, and the good people of AMAC, I have made the decision to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

He emphasized that this move isn’t driven by personal ambition. Instead, it’s about positioning AMAC to tap into opportunities by aligning with the current administration. “Our goal is to ensure the benefits of governance reach every part of our communities, from Nyanya to Karshi, Karu to Jikwoyi, and Garki to Wuse.

According to him, since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike took office, we’ve seen tangible progress. Infrastructure development is underway, security has improved, and lives are being impacted. AMAC has already benefited from federal appointments and projects initiated by the Tinubu administration.

“Notably, the appointment of Hon. Dr. Zephaniah Bitrus Jisalo as Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs marks a milestone. For the first time in Nigeria’s democratic history, the FCT has a representative in the Federal Executive Council. This development underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and recognition of the FCT’s needs.

“By aligning with the federal government, we can unlock more opportunities and bring development closer to our people.”

“In addition, please permit me to appreciate Mr President for equally approving the appointment of FCT indigene as the FCT Head of Civil Service, and also the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Gwarimpa.

“To our political family, let me assure you this is not a goodbye. I am still the same Maikalangu you know. I remain accessible, accountable, and committed to inclusive governance. My administration will continue to deliver people-oriented projects, empower our youth and women, and strengthen grassroots democracy.”

“Let us work together, not as members of different parties, but as people united in the pursuit of a better future for AMAC. With this move, I believe we are positioning ourselves to attract more federal support, development programs, and infrastructure that will uplift our communities.

“In closing, I want to thank His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Chairman of our great party Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Working Committee of our great party, the Hon Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Zephaniah Jisalo, my own state Chairman FCT, Alhaji Abdulmalik Usman, the AMAC Party Chairman, my Ward Chairman, and all our party excos, for their support and vision for Abuja.

“I pledge my loyalty to the APC family and reaffirm my commitment to always put the people of AMAC first. Let’s move forward together. The best days of AMAC are ahead of us.”

While welcoming Maikalangu to the ruling party, the National Chairman of APC, Senator Abdullahi Ganduje, said the good works of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made all the area councils in the FCT to embrace APC.

He revealed Maikalangu took the best decision by joining the ruling party, even as he urged AMAC residents to continue supporting the Executive Chairman of AMAC.

Sir Itiako Ikpokpo: Recharging Sports in the Niger Delta

0

By Fred Edoreh

In the quiet of his home in Asaba, Delta State, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo called a few people together to discuss Nigeria sports. He was concerned about the dwindling fortunes of the sector, and the immediacy of his concern was accentuated by Team Nigeria’s return from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games without any medal

He recalled that the two medals won by Nigeria at the preceeding Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were delivered by Ese Brume  and Blessing Oborodudu, both from Delta and Bayelsa states, and that in the glory days of the Super Eagles, when the team won the Tunisia ’94 Africa Cup of Nations, qualified to the USA 94 FIFA World Cup, its first time, and won the football gold at Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games, the teams were heavy with players from the Niger Delta region.

Truly, those successes were anchored by the likes of Stephen Keshi, Augustine Eguavoen, Finidi George, Samson Siasia, Sunday Oliseh, Austin Okocha, Victor Ikpeba, Friday Ekpo, Friday Elaho, Jonathan Akpoborie, Nduka Ugbade, Wilson Oruma, Nwankwo Kanu Taribo West, Emmanuel Amuneke and many more Niger Deltans.

Similarly, the beautiful days of Nigeria women football paraded the likes of Captain Florence Omagbemi, Patience Avre, Mercy Akide, Stella Mbachu, Maureen Madu, Perpetual Nkwocha, Vera Okoro, Florence Ivwueta, Efionwan Ekpo, and others from the region, with clubs like Pelican Stars of Calabar, Ufuoma Babes of Warri, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt and Delta Queens of Asaba, providing the nucleus.

Nigeria secured African, Commonwealth, Olympic medals and world reckoning in boxing with names like Isaac Ikhuoria, Hogan ‘Kid’ Bassey, Davidson Andeh, David Izonritei, Peter Konyegwachie, Jerry Okorodudu, Samuel Peters, Efetobore Apochi, Efe Ajagba and more. All Niger Deltans.

The story is the same in weightlifting, tennis, wrestling, the para sports, table tennis, and athletics with the likes of Oliver Orok, Chioma Ajunwa, Enefiok Udo-Obong, Endurance Ojokolo, Mercy Nku, Gloria Alozie, Patience Okon, Gloria Kemasuode, Tamunosiki Atorudibo, Yusuf Ali, Henry Amike, Charlton Ehizuelen, Nduka Odizor, the Offiong sisters, Cecilia and Edem, Blessing Okagbare, Seun Ogunkoya and more.

He also recalled with relish the global energy which the Ogbe Hard Court brought to Nigeria but regretted that it is no longer in existence.

“As we can see, things have fallen badly apart, and we must do something to revive our sports,” he declared.

“It is not enough to just rue our declining fortunes, blame sports administrators, and fold our hands. All of us who love sports and understand its power in the transformation of society must do something from any space we find ourselves. We need to do this to recover and sustain the place of the Niger Delta in sports, for the benefit of our people and for the nation, by extension.”

Ikpokpo may have been in the circle of friends who are sports administrators, but he is better known as a politician, entrepreneur, and public servant.

A former Students Union President of the University of Port Harcourt, he was a two-time Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Council, Director General of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON,  he has been quietly minding his business, Dunamis Icon Limited, with interests in transportation, catering, hospitality, entertainment, event management and business consultancy services.

Yet, he has always recognized the economic potentials of sports and has had a burning zeal for the repositioning and development of sports, especially at the grassroots levels.

Accordingly, as Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of ALGON, he introduced the Local Governments Sports Festival in Delta State, a project which should have been escalated and elevated nationwide, had the national leadership of ALGON caught the vision.

Obviously not deterred, he reasoned that the Niger Delta, being the bastion of sports in Nigeria, must take the lead and show the way. Thus was the Niger Delta Sports Festival born.

The idea of the festival was to spark massive enthusiasm, greater interest, involvement, and participation in sports in the grassroots and inner communities of the region, to precurse the enduring deliverables of talent discovery, grooming and nurturing of outstanding athletes unto high performance class, all aimed at empowering and uplifting the youth of the Niger Delta through sports.

As noble as the intention is, the challenge was always going to be funding, but as they say, “where there is a will, there is a way.” In finding the way, Ikpokpo identified the Niger Delta Development Commission as a fitting anchor for the cause.

The NDDC has been intervening in the provision of multi sectoral infrastructure and various forms of youth and women empowerment across its mandate state for the 25 years of its establishment, and Ikpokpo thought that the Commission should as well intervene in a bigger way to uplift the sports sector of the region, especially to provide the teeming youth population a wider and more global consciousness beyond the expectations from the region’s crude oil.

Ikpokpo’s presentation to the NDDC was articulate and moving, but he says that the real heroes are the leadership of the NDDC, which not only fully understood the dynamics of development, but also had even far deeper convictions about the power of sports.

“The Chairman of the Board, Chiedu Ebie, had sourced private sector sponsorship to revive the Principals Cup in Delta State, while as Commissioner for Education, with the programme running into its tenth year. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, is not only a protagonist for all-around development of the Niger Delta, he has an unquenchable passion for youth development through the multiple platforms, and he is leading the repositioning of the NDDC into a more transformative institution, for deeper and more enduring impact on the people. The Executive Director,  Administration and Finance, Alabo Boma Iyaye, had been three times Commissioner of Sports in Rivers State. He not only understood exactly what was at stake, he knew the needed bricks to the works and when and how to deploy them. Then, there is Hon Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the NDDC, who takes the overall development and progress of the Niger Delta so heartily personal,” he revealed.

“These are the people who gave heart, flesh, life and blood to what has now become a movement for the revival of sports in the Niger Delta. They not only agreed with our proposition, they possessed it, deepened its reaches and gave it impetus as a platform for the building of greater, unity, friendship and integration of the region, recast it as a platform to retell the true story of a unique people whose abiding greatness and cultural identity have been seemingly shadowed by their oil wealth, and positioned it as a pad for the empowerment of the people to unleash their innate wealth of talents across all spheres of life.

“Their understanding, foresight, passion and commitment, provided the enabling atmosphere for us at Dunamis Icon to execute the project.”

Ikpokpo was strategically disruptive and innovative in conceptualisation, recruitment, and operations in pursuit of the success of the Niger Delta Sports Festival.

As they say, the rest is history. Nigerians have adjudged it as one of the most valuable, best organised, and highly enjoyed events in the nation’s sporting history.

Not only were the grassroots and inner communities across the over 185 local government areas of the Niger Delta region been awakened to sports, but the youngsters who made it to Uyo have had a life changing exposure and positively challenging experience. The host state, Akwa Ibom, has been left a legacy of upgraded sports facilities, but even more celebratory is the programme put in place for the continued nurturing of the youngsters discovered at the festival, the quintessential victory for not only the region, not only the sports community, but for the entire nation.

In a bid to enhance the operational effectiveness and overall performance of Nigerian athletes, the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) memorandum towards a fixed period for the National Sports Festival (NSF), as well as an affirmation of the Rules to streamline the number of sports at the Festival has been approved by the National Council on Sports.

The both memoranda were presented at the Extraordinary National Council of Sports meeting, that took place on Wednesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State and were approved accordingly.

In a communique signed by the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, it noted that the Council gave its approval for the National Sports Festival to be held between November and December of the Festival year.

The decision was reached in order to align with international best practices, as it is essential to maintain a stable and predictable sports calendar for our traditional national competitions such as the National Sports Festival.

A fixed period for the NSF would improve organization, participant engagement, financial and logistical efficiency, and marketing and sponsorship opportunities of the NSF.

The Communique also stated that the Council reaffirmed its decision on Rule 11 (i), (ii), and (iii) of the 2024 National Sports Festival General Rules and Regulations, as reached at the Extraordinary Council Meeting held in Benin City, Edo State on Thursday, March 14, 2019.

The Rule 11(i) stated that a maximum of 32 sports shall feature at the Festival (27 compulsory and 5 optional).

Rule 11(ii) affirmed that the compulsory sports were selected based on their popularity in the 36 states, including the FCT, State entries in the sports in previous Festivals, and the standard of Nigeria’s participation in the sport at the international level.

Rule 11(iii) stated that the Host State is at liberty to select a maximum of 5 sports out of the 25 optional sports to make up the 32 sports to feature ag the Festival.

This move will help stabilize the number of sports at the multisports event, to mitigate irregular changes that may affect management and organization of the Games.

The Council commended the Federal Government for its dedication to developing sports in the country by establishing the NSC.

The Council also appreciated the Ogun State Government for their commitment to hosting the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival.

The 22nd National Sports Festival, Tagged Gateway Games, will take place from May 18-30, 2025 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

By Uche Onyeali

President Bola Tinubu has set a three-week deadline for the presentation of a report on the forthcoming national population and housing census in the country.

The president gave the deadline while

inaugurating a high-level committee for the census exercise.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila,  during the event held at the State House yesterday, the president said census is critical for national development, planning and decision-making in areas such as healthcare, education, security and the economy.

He called on  relevant stakeholders to collaborate for a successful outcome of the exercise.

“Work with all relevant agencies, including the ministry of budget and economic planning.

“This ministry has to take charge of this because you cannot budget if you do not know how many we are.

“We expect you to touch on the technology area because the census must be technology-driven.

“Things have changed since the last time that we conducted this exercise.

“The enumeration has to be technology-driven with biometrics and digitalisation,” the president said.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, who chairs the presidential committee, said it would submit its interim report within three weeks.

Bagudu recalled Tinubu’s advice to ministers during their retreat in 2023, urging them to think creatively and maximise available resources, even in tough economic times.

He said despite global economic headwinds, Nigeria is making progress under Tinubu’s leadership, citing foreign exchange stability and positive growth indicators.

The minister said the committee would recommend practical strategies, including options for mobilising funding both domestically and internationally.

Also speaking, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammed Idris said accurate data is vital for planning across all sectors, adding that a credible census forms the bedrock for such data.

On his part, Chairman of the National Population Commission, NPC, Nasir Isa Kwarra,  who will serve as the committee secretary, said preparations for the census have begun.

He noted that the commission is working closely with the ministry of budget and economic planning and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth process.

Kampala Convention: Kalu Lauds Tinubu On  IDPs’ Welfare

0

By Paul Effiong, Abuja

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin  Kalu has assured the United Nations that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is taking deliberate and effective steps to address the plight of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement in Abuja, signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu.

According to the statement, the assurance was made during a high-level United Nations Special Online event held yesterday to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the Guiding Principles on Internally Displaced Persons.

Kalu also highlighted  government’s concerted efforts to domesticate the Kampala Convention, a pivotal regional treaty designed to protect and assist IDPs.

He emphasised that the Tinubu administration had proactively activated key components of the treaty to significantly enhance the living conditions of IDPs.

Kalu  informed the UN that  Nigeria’s National Assembly is diligently finalising legislation to provide legal backing to the treaty.

He assured that upon securing presidential assent, states of the federation would also adopt the legislation, ensuring a unified approach to addressing IDP issues nationwide.

“I am humbled to make my contributions about legislative activities and perspectives that we have on this particular issue, particularly in regards to concrete steps taken by my country to address the plight of Internally Displaced Persons. Our country believes so much in these principles.

“The ones that are on the front burner for us as we activate issues around  IDPs. The principle one, which is protection from arbitrary displacement. Three, which is protection during this displacement, ten, which is the right to know the fate of whereabouts of relatives and twenty eight, which is the right to be returned or resettled. These are the ones on the front burner. We also believe in other ones, these principles form the bedrock of the Kampala Convention.

“Our target is that these principles become alive in our country by making sure that the Kampala Convention which we have rectified will be domesticated in our laws in the country.

“Nigeria after rectifying it, leaving it as it is, is not enough. The next step is to make sure that it is domesticated. To do that, we have taken it upon ourselves. Personally, I proposed the enactment into our laws and sponsored it in the House of Representatives because I believe in the potency of these principles and it can only be active in Nigeria if it is made to be part of our laws, especially as it concerns arbitrary displacement and upholding human rights of these IDPs and working in partnership with organisations like yours to make sure they are well taken care of.

“I proposed a bill, it has been approved by the House of Representatives and it has moved to the Senate for concurrence. The Senate’s report is ready and will be considered when we are back from our recess on April 29. After that the National Assembly’s clerk will take it to the president for assent.

“This has been done to make sure that activities around  IDPs are governed by the framework. Government, also through legislative intervention, has provided for a commission for the protection and rehabilitation of IDPs and we call it NCFRMI, as a result of a Bill we passed in 2022 to strengthen it,” Kalu said.

While emphasising the need for the domestication of the legislations, Kalu also said that government is evolving formidable mechanisms to address the root causes of the displacements.

NORTHERN ELDERS TO FG: Plateau Killings National Disgrace, Reflection Of Failure

0

…Deploy massive security to affected areas

…Compensate victims, communities

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

Northern Elders’ Forum, NEF, yesterday added its voice to spiralling condemnations of the persistent and brutal killings in Plateau State, saying the situation has become a national disgrace and a stark reflection of the Federal Government’s failure to fulfil its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.

Besides, the NEF demanded massive security deployment to the area, as well as adequate compensation for victims and affected communities.

In a statement, the forum’s Spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, expressed deep outrage at the scale of violence inflicted on innocent citizens, warning that the Federal Government’s silence and inaction could no longer be tolerated.

The elders said that Plateau State, which was once known for its unity, peace, and cultural diversity, has now become a theatre of bloodshed and lawlessness.

Emphasing that “It is unacceptable that such acts of mass murder and destruction continue unabated, with little to no meaningful response from those charged with safeguarding the nation”.

Jiddere, therefore, called for the immediate and large-scale deployment of well-equipped security forces to Plateau State to halt the violence and restore law and order.

He added: “The silence and inaction of the Federal Government can no longer be tolerated. NEF demands the immediate and massive deployment of well-equipped security forces to Plateau State to halt these atrocities and restore order.

“The government must not only apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators but must do so swiftly and decisively. The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice, and there must be no sanctuary for those who orchestrate or enable these horrors.

“We further demand that the Federal Government provide adequate compensation to victims and affected communities who have suffered unimaginable loss.

“An independent investigative panel must be established without delay, and its findings must be made public to ensure accountability and prevent further bloodshed.

“The Northern Elders Forum stands in full solidarity with the people of Plateau State and all affected regions. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in these senseless attacks. Enough is enough. The time for words has passed; this is a time for bold, decisive, and just action”.

Similarly, Arewa Youth Forum, an umbrella body of all of Youth Organisations and Civil Societies in Nigeria and Diaspora, has strongly condemned the devastating attacks in Plateau and Benue states that resulted in loss of lives and property destruction.

This was contained in a statement signed by the National President, Ahmed Mohammed Zagi, made available to our correspondent, yesterday.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.

“We also commend the resilience of the people of Plateau State in the face of these challenges”, it said.

Arewa Youth Forum, therefore, demanded investigations into the killings.

“We call for a thorough and transparent investigation to identify perpetrators and their sponsors”, it said.

The group further demanded protection of lives and property, through deployment of adequate security measures to prevent further attacks.

Furthermore, they asked for justice for victims, as well as prosecution of those responsible, to ensure justice and deter future attacks.

They urged citizens to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and reject violence.

The Arewa Youth Forum is committed to promoting peace, unity, and development in Nigeria, standing in solidarity with the people of Plateau and Benue states.

Other groups, such as the Arewa Consultative Forum, have also condemned the attacks, demanding compensation for victims’ families and relief for those injured.

InfraCredit Raises ₦27bn, Plans NGX Future Listing

0

By Charles Ebi

InfraCredit, Nigeria’s domestic credit guarantee institution, has raised ₦27bn ,$17.7m, in new equity as part of a broader ₦64bn ,$41m, listing on the NASD OTC Exchange Plc.

The capital raise, supported by a $6m investment from the United Kingdom through its MOBILIST programme, marks a major step toward deepening Nigeria’s local capital markets and accelerating infrastructure financing.

The announcement was made following the formal listing of InfraCredit on the NASD OTC Exchange, marking its debut on the public market and signaling its intention to explore a future listing on the Nigerian Exchange ,NGX.

The move reflects InfraCredit’s broader ambition to tap into domestic capital pools and foster a more inclusive and liquid financial ecosystem for infrastructure development.

The UK government’s investment was channeled through MOBILIST ,Mobilising Institutional Capital Through Listed Product Structures, an initiative designed to mobilize private capital for sustainable development.

The investment will enhance InfraCredit’s guarantee capacity, allowing it to support a wider range of infrastructure projects across Nigeria and strengthen its ability to provide local currency guarantees to institutional investors.

Speaking on the development, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter described the transaction as a testament to the long-standing collaboration between the United Kingdom and Nigeria in promoting sustainable development and market-based solutions.

He noted that the UK, through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office ,FCDO, was instrumental in the founding of InfraCredit via the Private Infrastructure Development Group ,PIDG, and remains a committed partner to its growth.

“InfraCredit’s success highlights the power and impact of long-term partnerships. This transaction illustrates the potential of public markets to mobilize domestic capital at scale”, Baxter said.

InfraCredit’s Chief Executive Officer, Chinua Azubike, welcomed the development, stating that the listing represents a pivotal chapter in the company’s journey toward scaling up infrastructure finance in Nigeria.

“Our transition to a listed public company reflects our ambition to build a deeper, more inclusive capital market for domestic resources that accelerates infrastructure delivery in Nigeria”, Azubike said.

Established to enhance the creditworthiness of infrastructure-related debt instruments, InfraCredit provides Naira-denominated guarantees that reduce risk and attract long-term institutional capital from sources such as pension funds and insurance firms.

The company’s guarantees have so far enabled the development of a project pipeline exceeding ₦750bn ,$500m, underscoring its growing role in Nigeria’s infrastructure landscape.

The latest investment and equity raise come at a time when Nigeria faces an estimated infrastructure investment requirement of over $2.3trn between 2021 and 2043, according to government projections.

By expanding its reach in the capital markets, InfraCredit aims to bridge a significant portion of this funding gap through strategic partnerships and private sector engagement.
