Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has described renewable energy as the cornerstone for global development policy.

Abbas disclosed this while declaring open, the First Legislative Conference and Expo on Renewable Energy yesterday in Lagos.

The event was organised by the House Committee on Renewable Energy in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, under the Parliamentary Development Programme.

The speaker described the conference as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s legislative journey.

“It affirms our resolve to contribute meaningfully to global energy reform and to create opportunities for economic growth, industrial innovation and environmental resilience,” the speaker said.

He highlighted key legislative strides by the 10th House of Representatives to include: the creation of a Standing Committee on Renewable Energy to guide national priorities and the recent tax reform bills eliminating Value Added Tax on renewable energy and compressed natural gas, among others.

He noted that Strategic Objective 8.5 of the House Legislative Agenda prioritises the transition to clean energy through private investment incentives, public health reforms in cooking energy and emissions reduction.

Referencing global trends, the speaker observed that in 2024 alone, 585 gigawatts of renewable energy were added globally—accounting for over 92 percent of new power capacity—with $1.7 trillion invested in clean energy technologies in 2023.

“What was once considered a fringe alternative is now the backbone of global power development.

“Nigeria must align with this trend to safeguard our economy and environment,” he added.

The speaker commended the administration of President Bola Tinubu for passing the Electricity Act of 2023, which devolved power generation authority to sub-national entities, and for approving $1 billion in financing for rural solar expansion.

“Of this amount, $750 million has been allocated to expand solar energy access in underserved areas.

The speaker also spotlighted Nigeria’s role in continental efforts such as the Mission 300 Initiative with the World Bank and African Development Bank, which seeks to provide electricity to 300 million Africans by 2030.

He called on all stakeholders —government, private sector, civil society —to act with purpose and clarity, stressing the importance of converting conference resolutions into actionable legislation, scalable technologies, and impactful investment.

By Our Correspondent

Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday adjourned a suit filed by some vulnerable residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, against the Minister, Nyesom Wike, until May 29 for hearing.

Justice James Omotosho adjourned the matter after Adamu Mahmood, who appeared for the plaintiff, sought an extension of time to file a further affidavit in response to the counter affidavit served on him.

The aggrieved residents, including, scavengers, beggars and petty traders, dragged the minster, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, and others to court demanding N500 million in damages over alleged breach of their fundamental rights.

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, on April 15 filed its counter affidavit.

NSCDC in its counter affidavit deposed to by Goodness Akomolafe, denied all the allegations.

In the application dated and filed April 15, civil defence said it had not violated the applicant’s fundamental human rights in any way.

Besides, the Department of State Service, DSS, another defendant, also denied allegations by the plaintiff, urging the court to dismiss the suit.

A legal practitioner, Abba Hikima filed the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1749/3024 before Justice Omotosho on behalf of the vulnerable residents.

Hikima listed as the applicant in the originating motion dated November 19, 2024, but filed on November 20, 2024, said he is suing in public interest for the protection of vulnerable citizens in Nigeria.

Also listed as respondent in the suit is the director-general of the DSS.

The appellants are praying the court to, among others, order a stop to their alleged arbitrary arrest on Abuja streets by the respondents.

The lawyer also joined the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, and Federal Government of Nigeria as fifth and sixth respondents respectively.

He is praying for an order awarding the N500 million as general and exemplary damages for the violation of the fundamental rights of the affected citizens.

He prayed the court to declare that “the arbitrary arrest, detention without charges, harassment and extortion of homeless persons, scavengers, petty traders, beggars and other vulnerable Nigerians resident in the FCT, constitute a violation of their fundamental rights.

The rights, they said, are guaranteed under Sections 34, 35, 41 and 42 of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as altered).

He is, therefore, seeking “an order directing the respondents to issue a public apology to the affected individuals and Nigerian citizens at large for the inhumane, arbitrary and unconstitutional treatment meted on them pursuant to the directive of the 1st respondent (Wike) dated the 22nd October, 2024.

“An order mandating the respondents to set in motion and implement immediate policies and reforms, including public education for the realisation of the fundamental human rights of vulnerable Nigerians residing in Nigeria.”

Hikima averred that on November 12, 2024, at about 11pm, on the Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja, he sighted a motorcade of a joint task force security operatives and enforcement officers, including personnel of the military and police arresting numerous individuals perceived as homeless persons, scavengers and beggars.

He alleged that those arrested include hawkers of goods such as ice cream, sweets and biscuits; petty traders conducting lawful businesses along the roadside and persons dressed in ways reflecting their economic hardship or appearing homeless.

According to him, the individuals were forcefully apprehended, verbally harassed and subjected to physical threats in full view of all passersby, thereby creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

He said he felt devastated as a human rights lawyer, and decided to trail the task force’s motorcade from a reasonable distance to Eagle Square along Shehu Shagari Way where they dropped off the victims.

Performance Not Party Will Determine Adeleke’s Election  Victory, Says APC Member

From Richard Akintade, Osogbo

A leading security expert in Nigeria and strong member of the All Progressives Congress ,APC, in Osun State, High Chief Olalekan Jackson Ojo, has informed that there is currently no opposition party strong enough to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as well as the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, as he would emerge victorious come 2026 gubernatorial election in Osun.

Ojo added that the sterling performance of Ademola in all sectors of the state economy, especially infrastructure would give him seamless victory over his opponents and not his political party.

Ojo was reacting to the gale of defections from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, in the state to the main opposition APC, the recent which was that of Member representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in the State, Hon. Oluwole Oke.

The security expert said Governor Ademola has performed beyond the expectations of many, including his traducers with unprecedented impacts across the state.

He explained that despite the monumental achievements of the Governor, he has not borrowed a dime from anywhere to fund his numerous projects yet he continues to pay workers and pensioners as and when due.

He, however, described Oluwole Oke’s defection as a mere jamboree with no adverse effects on the reelection of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

“The integral consideration by the electorate in any political environment is performance and not political party; and that is exactly what is going to play out in Osun during the governorship poll of 2026.

“Though I am a member of the APC from Imesi-Ile, but this Governor has greatly impressed me with the speed and manner he breaks unprecedented records in all sectors across the state.

“For instance, contrary to the claim of Wole Oke and his co-travellers, the impacts of his government in Obokun is uncommon, there are some areas I didn’t expect any Governor to touch even if I become Governor myself but this Governor went ahead and made it happen.

“Obviously, the Governor has written his name in gold in the sand of time and definitely history will not forget him in a jiffy, this is a man that unlike his predecessors has refused to borrow a dime and continues to perform than those that dragged Osun State into humongous debt through dubious borrowing.

“It is my utmost delight that the people of the State recognise and appreciate his great performance, the fact that played out during the Workers’ Day Celebration on May 1, that unanimous endorsement by the state’s workforce is unprecedented in the annals of Osun politics and I can assure you that personally beyond party affiliations, I will equally mobilize for the Governor to win his second term bid”, Ojo said.
