Zamfara: NDM Condemns AYCF’s Call For State Of Emergency, Exposes Yerima Shettima’s ‘Political Opportunism’

The Northern Democratic Movement (NDM), rejects the inflammatory and divisive call by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) and its Lagos-based leader, Yerima Shettima, for a state of emergency in Zamfara State.

The group described the demand as baseless and misguided, adding that it also exposes Shettima’s desperation to remain politically relevant despite his lack of grassroots legitimacy, moral authority, and practical solutions to the North’s challenges.

The NDM notes with dismay that Yerima Shettima, a self-appointed “leader” whose only connection to Northern Nigeria is his occasional incendiary press releases, has once again chosen to milk a former Zamfara governor through dubious means to promote his narrative.

While genuine Northern leaders are on the ground collaborating with communities and security agencies to address insecurity, Shettima issues reckless statements from the comfort of Lagos, a city far removed from the realities of Northwestern Nigeria, thanks to the chicken change he receives from a low-ranking minister.

Shettima’s AYCF lacks any meaningful structure, membership, or credibility in Northern Nigeria as it exists only as a platform for him to audition for patronage from political godfathers. His call for a state of emergency is a deliberate attempt to undermine the constitutional authority of Zamfara State’s democratically elected government and sow chaos for personal relevance.

The NDM suspects that a former governor who depleted Zamfara’s resources and failed to provide security and infrastructure has now resorted to using Shettima to distract the incumbent governor, who is committed to restoring peace in Zamfara.

The NDM categorically condemns the call for an emergency as a dangerous overreach that would destabilize Zamfara and set a harmful precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.

Security challenges in Zamfara require sustained, intelligence-driven strategies, not politically motivated grandstanding. Governor Dauda Lawal Dare’s administration has made measurable progress, including revitalizing community-led vigilance groups with improved training and oversight.

Gov. Dare also cooperated with federal reinforcements for targeted operations in hotspot areas while launching socio-economic programs to address the root causes of banditry, such as unemployment and rural neglect.

The NDM challenges Shettima to publicly disclose the last time he visited Zamfara to engage directly with affected communities.

We asked him to explain the AYCF’s tangible contributions to peacebuilding beyond issuing press statements, and his relationship with political interests benefiting from instability.

Shettima’s hypocrisy is glaring. While he pontificates on Zamfara’s security, he has never condemned the role of corrupt federal actors, illegal arms traffickers, or external sponsors of banditry. His sudden “concern” for Zamfara reeks of a paid agenda to scapegoat Governor Dare and destabilize the state for his benefactor, who has woefully failed to govern the state rightly when he held sway.

The NDM calls on President Tinubu and the National Assembly to disregard Shettima’s antics and focus on strengthening support for Zamfara’s security architecture.

The NDM added that the state will no longer tolerate charlatans who weaponize our people’s pain for fame. Yerima Shettima represents nobody but himself. True Northerners are working quietly to rebuild our region, not chasing headlines in Lagos. Zamfara’s government deserves support, not sabotage.

The NDM stands in solidarity with the people and government of Zamfara. We reaffirm our confidence in Governor Dare’s commitment to peace and call on all Nigerians to reject fear mongering by political jobbers like Yerima Shettima. Now is the time for unity, not toxic rhetoric.

Signed,
Hon. Ibrahim Sule Sarki

Residents Raise Alarm, As  Illegal Task Force Take Over Abakaliki

0

By Nwogha Ndubuisi

Illegal environmental task force operators have taken over Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, molesting shop owners in their attempt to force residents to buy disposable waste buckets.

The group, operating with tricycles, recently confiscated goods from shop owners who questioned the legality of their operations.

One of the victims, Mr Solomon Nweke, a phone accessories dealer at  St Patrick Road, Kpiri-kpiri, opposite  Ugo Martins Drive, lamented that the group, with the Ebonyi State Ministry of Environment’s IGR Board boldly encrypted receipt, said the  operators stormed his shop and requested that he pays N15,000 for not obtaining the approved environmental waste bucket.

The action, according to Mr Nweke, forced many shop owners to start closing their businesses, as all efforts to convince them that there was no public notice that directed them to pay such money fell on deaf ear.

He narrated that the team leader, Mr Amechi ransacked all the shops within the area and later made away with his bunch of Oraimo phone cords.

Another victims, Mrs Nwiyi Ukamaka, a thrift wears dealer, and Engr Chibueze Njoku, narrated their ugly experiences and blamed the state government for the introduction of multiple taxation, even when they are aware of the economic situation.

However, in our investigation, the Head of Department in charge of Environmental Health Service, Mrs Uzoke Jacinta revealed that the ministry did not contract the sale of waste buckets, noting that the ministry had received a lot of complaints and warned those sabotaging it to desist from such heinous act.

When Aljazirah Nigeria contacted the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Victor Chukwu, he confirmed the activities of the saboteurs and urged the public to report those involved for arrest and prosecution.

“Chief Ayo Adebanjo had an unshakable belief in the capacity of Nigeria’s different ethnic groups to live together in one united country if their diversity is constructively addressed in the country’s constitution.

Pastor Tunde Bakare of Global Community Citadel Church, in his sermon ,stressed that life is ephemeral ,urging  everyone to live impactful lives.

“The best of men are still men and nothing but a vapour. We should live our lives accurately that when we leave here we will be missed. Our lives are frail. There is always an end,” the cleric said.

By Mariyah Adamu, Abuja

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has said that the Federal Government adopted  focused leadership and inter-ministerial cooperation in successfully surmounting port challenges and ports are now attracting major container carriers and generating revenue for Nigeria.

Oyetola, who said this yesterday in Abuja while receiving members of Study Group 4, Senior Executive Course 47, National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, on a study tour to the Ministry also said that the long and difficult systemic challenges beyond administrative inefficiencies and infrastructural collapse in the maritime sector had been surmounted.

He said he had to confront and dismantle entrenched interests and well-organised syndicates who had for years fed fat on the chaos surrounding the ports and their access.

The Minister recalled that shortly after assuming office in 2023, it became clear that the Apapa gridlock had to be tackled head-on if Nigeria’s blue economy was to thrive.

According to him, “The fierce behind-the-scenes battles that led to the eventual clearing of the infamous Apapa gridlock that crippled port operations and economic activities for over two decades did not come easily.

“For the first time in over 20 years, trucks no longer spend weeks waiting to pick up or deliver cargo.

“Port users now experience seamless movement, while haulage costs dropped by as much as 60%”, he said.

Oyetola, pointed out that said that the ports were now alive again, attracting major container carriers, while trade was moving, time being saved and revenue growing.

He said that the Apapa gridlock was not natural, adding that it was engineered by people who built careers and empires on the dysfunction.

The minister said that clearing the gridlock meant going against years of collusion, corruption, and carefully cultivated disorder which was not easy.

He said that Apapa residents now lived in cleaner, quieter surroundings.

“Small businesses are beginning to return, port workers are more efficient, and the entire Nigerian economy stands to gain from the renewed competitiveness of its ports”, he said.

Head of Delegation of the NIPSS Study Group, Mr Abdulrahaman Idris, commended the minister for the giant strides achieved within two years of his assumption of office.

Idris, said that the 2025 study tour was themed “Blue Economy Sustainable Development In Nigeria, Issues, Challenges and Opportunities”.

He said that it was meant to provide solutions to issues affecting national life and to enhance the maritime sector.

According to him, “We are here today on this study tour to understudy the ministry and its activities.

“Members of this study group 4 are drawn from the public sector, the paramilitary and the presidency.

“The outcome of this tour would also form part of our submission to the President in November”.

2 Jailed 10 Years  For Sexually Assaulting Teenager

0

Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Lagos has sentenced two men, Chukwuka Odinaka and Ikechukwu Eze, to 10 years imprisonment each for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy (name withheld).

Justice Rahman Oshodi convicted Odinaka and Eze, after they pleaded guilty to an amended two-count charge of indecent treatment and sexual assault.

In his judgment, Oshodi said he had carefully considered the plea and sentencing agreements entered by the parties under Sections 75 and 76 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2015.

“I have listened attentively to the remarks during the sentencing hearing.

“It is noteworthy that the original charges against the convicts were for sexual assault by penetration, contrary to section 261 of the Criminal Law.

“This offence carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment, because  the gravity of the original offence cannot be understated.

“As the prosecution explained during sentencing, sexual offences against children are amongst the most serious crimes that come before the courts, representing profound violations of trust and causing potentially lifelong harm to the victims.

“The defendants having  been convicted of the two offences, are hereby  sentenced to seven years imprisonment for indecent treatment of a child and three years for sexual assault,” the judge held.

Oshodi further held that the sentences should run consecutively and ordered that the names of the convicts be registered in the sexual offences register of Lagos State Government.

The convict were initially arraigned on November 23, 2022 on a one-count charge of sexual assault by penetration and they pleaded not guilty.

During trial, the state counsel, Miss Inumidun Solarin submitted that the convicts sexually penetrated the anus of the 16-year-old boy, sometime in 2020.

The prosecution called two witnesses, the brother of the survivor and a nurse from Women at Risk International Foundation, WARIF, to support its case.

The prosecution also tendered Exhibits A to A7 and closed its case, but the convicts made no-case submissions.

However, on April 15, the prosecution informed  the court that the convicts had through their counsel, Ms Tolulope Banjo, entered a plea and sentencing agreement.

The plea bargain agreement  necessitated amending the charge to indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault. (NAN)

Tinubu To Unveil World’s Biggest Cotton Factory In Ogun – Abiodun

0

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would perform the groundbreaking for the establishment of the biggest cotton and polyester processing factory in the world at the Special Agro Processing Zone located at the Gateway International Airport, Iperu/Ilisan area of the State.

Speaking while receiving the former Accountant General of the Federation ,AGF, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, and members of the Iperu Development Association in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun said the factory, which is under the “Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative,” would sit on 400 hectares of land and would employ about 250,000 people daily.

He said: “In the next 30-45 days, we will be doing the groundbreaking of the Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative that will be done by Mr. President himself. It is going to be a bigger factory, and it will be the biggest cotton and polyester processing factory in the world.

“It will employ 250,000 people per day. The promoters of this factory went around the whole state, and they decided that this is the place they want to site this factory because of the existing infrastructure like the airport, proximity to consumers, and the ability of raw materials to come in centrally.

“We are clearing the site, and this factory is going to sit on 400 hectares of land. It is like a whole new town. The requirements to support this industry can best be imagined. The economic impact on Iperu and its environs, the entire Remoland, Ijebu land, and the whole of Ogun State is beyond imagination”,  Governor Abiodun said.

He said that apart from the cotton industry, the Nigerian Air Force ,NAF, has also indicated interest in siting a base in the town to secure not only the airport but also to provide adequate security to Iperu and the adjoining towns.

Explaining the rationale behind the siting of the airport at Iperu, Abiodun noted that the town is at the central point of the state, which could be easily accessible from any part of the state, adding that the 100 housing units built by his administration at the Airport Housing Estate would soon be commissioned.

The present administration, the governor informed, embarked on the reconstruction of the old Ibadan and other township roads while public schools and primary healthcare centers were renovated, and a mother-and-child hospital was brought to the town.

He commended the former Accountant General of the Federation for her meritorious service to her state and fatherland, describing her as a true daughter of the state who served without blemish.

“Thank you for all you have done. You have attracted laudable projects like a women’s empowerment center, a mini stadium, and the erosion control project to the town as a form of giving back to society.

“You started from a humble background. You began your primary and secondary education here in Iperu and later went to Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, before proceeding to Ogun State University and working with the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation ,OPIC, before moving to the federal level.

“You are hardworking, diligent, focused, intentional, and a disciplined person. Thank you for making us proud; you are a pride to womanhood. It shows that gender must not be a limitation to what one can attain,” he added.

Speaking, Mrs. Madein appreciated the governor for creating a conducive business environment that has attracted a lot of investments to the state.

She said her reason for the visit was to give a report of her stewardship and to inform the governor of her various contributions to state and national development.

“The purpose of this visit is to come and give the report of my stewardship as the Accountant General of the Federation and to let you know that I have represented Ogun State well and contributed to national development.

“It is also to appreciate Your Excellency for the support you gave to me that enabled my success during my tenure,” she said.

Chairman of the Iperu Development Association, Otunba Taiwo Oyebanjo, noted that the combination of the governor and the Accountant General has greatly impacted the socio-economic development of Iperu, as the town now boasts modern facilities that have improved the standard of living.

The Ebi of Idena, Oba Lukman Salami, in his contribution, lauded the governor for the transformation witnessed in the last couple of years, noting that the town has moved from a village to a town with modern facilities.

Ex-Rangers Players  Chairman Seeks Help For Okala, others

Augustine Igweokolo, Chairman, Ex-Rangers International FC Players Association, has called on the government and lovers of football to come to the aid of some of their ageing members.

Igweokolo, who spoke on the recent burial of Christian Isiadinso, stated this in Awka that heroes should be celebrated while they were still alive, instead of giving them elaborate burial when they were dead.

He commended the former and present governors of Anambra for running a welfare scheme for members of the association and called on governors of other southeast states to take a cue and evolve such scheme.

“I want to thank the Anambra government for what they are doing for us; it started with Mr Peter Obi, and Chief Willie Obiano sustained it, and now Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has taken it to another level.

“The truth is that these older people are dying. At the burial we just had, Emma Okala was not there, Dominic Nwobodo was not there and Okey Emodi was not there because of ill health.

“Christian Chukwu just died, we can’t continue to wait to bury them; I want to appeal to the public especially our southeast people to come to their aid and celebrate them while they are alive.

“If the society appreciates them, let them help them now; let them build the hall of fame they are talking about, so that they too can enter it, that is the best way we can celebrate them”, he said.
