0

FROM SAMSON ALFA, MINNA

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Niger State Command has intercepted a  tanker loaded with 246 bags of cannabis sativa along  Suleja-Kaduna road.

The State Commander of NDLEA, Mallam Shehu Nomau gave the hint during a media chat in Minna.

Nomau said the command successfully got the consignment as a result of intelligence report from a patriotic Nigerian who made the information available to the command.

He revealed that the fuel tanker was from Delta State and carrying cannabis sativa weighing 3,047 kilograms to Niger State as its final destination.

The commander  explained that the tanker was arrested alongside  three vehicles with four suspects.

He said the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.

Nomau acknowledged the support and commitment of Governor Umaru Bago to the command in fighting  illicit drugs and drug dealers in the state.

He warned drug peddlers  to desist, as the command would not relent in its efforts to arresting them.

Abia Govt Moves To Acquire  60% Of EEDC’s Assets

0

From CHARLES ONYEKWERE

Abia State government said it has submitted a bid to acquire 60 percent of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company’s, EEDC, assets to boost power distribution in Umuahia, the state capital and other adjoining local government areas.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed this during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting, said the move was part of efforts by the Governor Alex Otti-led administration to fast-track development.

Kanu, who said negotiations for the 60 percent acquisition of EEDC’s assets had reached an advanced stage, added that the process of ring-fencing eight local government areas in Abia Central and Abia North is ongoing.

Similarly, the commissioner announced that the state government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with MTN Nigeria for  digital transformation of the state covering six key areas.

According to him, the strategic partnership between the state and MTN Nigeria is the outcome of several months of negotiations between Abia State government officials and the management of MTN.

The commissioner identified the key areas as100 percent coverage of the population and space of the entire state with broadband access before the end of 2025; provision of 4G and 5G services in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia; and a device ownership scheme for Abia civil servants (a situation whereby MTN will finance the acquisition of laptops, smartphones and Wi-Fi devices for civil servants).

Others include digital governance (provision of cloud services and dedicated cloud computing service), establishment of Abia Digital Mall and the provision of a digital marketplace to drive both e-governance and e-commerce in the state.

The commissioner explained that the partnership would help the state leverage technology to drive socio-economic growth. Contributing, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, announced that Abia  is among the pilot states for the Solar-for-Health-Power Project, an EU-sponsored project, which he said would be launched in a week’s time.

According to him, the EU will bring 70 percent financing, amounting to N2 million euros, while Abia State will pay a counterpart funding of 30 percent.

He noted that the project, when launched, would light up a minimum of nine health facilities across the state.

Contributing, the General Manager of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, Mr Ogbonnia Okereke, said the agency had commenced door-to-door collection of waste in some parts of Aba, Umuahia and street-to-street collection in some parts of Abia North.

The initiative, according to him, is part of  efforts to keep the state clean, adding that it has elicited joy among residents and commendations from Abians in the diaspora. He added that ASEPA is on the verge of converting animal dung at  Lokpanta cattle market into biogas for roasting animals.

The ASEPA boss said the initiative would become an alternative to the use of tyres to roast animals, as the practice has grave health implications. He also said that the agency had commenced recycling waste into other products.

He noted that the abattoirs in Lokpanta and Uzuakoli had been renovated and reopened after they were shut down, following their poor hygienic conditions. “As ASEPA moves from waste conversion and recycling into a circular economy of waste as opposed to a linear economy, they have signed an MoU with a firm that possesses both international and extensive local experience in this area.

Insecurity: Forum Raises Alarm Over Rising Death Toll, Rejects NASS  Summit

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

Group under the auspices of Nigeria Youth Forum, NYF, has raised  alarm over the worsening security crisis, warning that the country is drifting dangerously into a state of anarchy, as citizens continue to pay the price for government’s failure to act.

The forum, in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja by its National President, Comrade Toriah Filani, described the ongoing killings in Benue, Zamfara, Katsina, Borno and Plateau States, alongside emerging terror-linked groups in Kwara State, as a coordinated assault on national stability.

The group outrightly rejected the security summit proposed by the National Assembly, dismissing it as a repetitive and ineffective measure that had never produced meaningful results.

“We have no confidence whatsoever in the National Assembly’s proposed security summit. It will amount to another round of talk shows and hollow communiqués. If the president had sacked just one GOC or commissioner of police over the atrocities in these states, others would have sat up by now,” Filani stated.

The group warned that Nigeria is bleeding and that those entrusted with protecting lives and property appear more concerned with political maneuvering than confronting the national emergency.

“Nigeria is bleeding while our leaders chase shadows. Every week, the country is plunged into fresh chaos and all we get are recycled press statements and condolence messages,” the group lamented.

To back its position, the coalition cited a recent BBC Hausa report, which revealed that no fewer than 3,610 Nigerians were killed by bandits and insurgents between January and March.

According to the report, Niger State recorded the highest number of deaths with 631 persons killed, 251 abducted and 178 separate attacks. Zamfara followed with 585 deaths, 918 abductions and 250 attacks.

“In Borno State, 514 people were killed, 357 kidnapped and 397 attacks recorded. Katsina witnessed 341 killings and 495 kidnappings across 247 incidents, while Kaduna recorded 106 deaths and 128 violent attacks, Sokoto and Kebbi States also suffered 184 deaths collectively within the same period.

“Additional data from the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, put the total number of Nigerians killed within the past year at over 614,000, with 2.2 million abducted across the country. Similarly, figures from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, ACLED, analysed by Premium Times, revealed that between May 2023 and May 2024 alone, 4,556 fatalities and 7,086 abductions occurred across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The North West led with 1,475 deaths and 4,343 abductions, followed closely by the North Central which recorded 1,444 deaths, mostly from banditry, communal clashes and cult-related violence, along with 1,321 abductions.

“In the North East, at least 819 persons were killed and 688 abducted from 408 violent incidents. The South South zone had 336 deaths and 295 abductions, while the South East witnessed 310 fatalities and 214 kidnappings. In the South West, 172 deaths were recorded alongside 225 abductions during the period under review. Another report from Beacon Consulting stated that 13,346 Nigerians were killed and 9,207 abducted in 667 out of the 774 local government areas between May 2023 and September 2024,” the report revealed.

Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, the member representing Damboa, Gwoza and Chibok Federal Constituency of Borno State,  Ahmadu Jaha,  decried the resurgence of Boko Haram and ISWAP, revealing that insurgents now deploy weaponised drones more advanced than those in the  military’s arsenal.

“At one point, 22 of Borno State’s 27 local government areas were under terrorist control. If we fail to act decisively now, Nigeria risks the kind of collapse that befell empires like Rome, whose leaders ignored the threat until it was too late.”

The forum echoed its concerns, describing recent attacks in Uromi (Edo), Jos (Plateau), and parts of Kaduna as clear signs of an expanding warfront. It warned that what began as farmers-herders clashes has evolved into highly coordinated attacks by foreign mercenaries and well-armed bandit networks.

It cautioned that Nigeria risks descending into full-scale war if urgent and far-reaching actions are not taken immediately.

The group  noted that blaming indigenous Fulani communities for the crisis is misguided, stating that many of the attacks are carried out by foreign elements who have exploited Nigeria’s weak border control and institutional gaps.

It concluded by calling for immediate reforms within the security architecture, increased funding, deployment of modern warfare technologies and political will from the presidency to halt the country’s descent into chaos and equally advocated for more budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector as a means to reduce unemployment and curtail insecurity.

ICPC, NASS Partner On Transparency, Accountability in Legislative Agenda

ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, to promote transparency, open governance, and accountability in Nigeria’s legislative processes.

The Chairman of the ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, made this known on Monday during the inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House of Representatives.

Dr. Aliyu stated that the ICPC, as an anti-corruption agency, is pleased to align with the House on initiatives that foster open governance and transparency, stressing, “Mr. Speaker, we want to assure you that, on our part, we are open to working with the National Assembly, especially the House of Representatives, to deepen transparency and accountability in your legislative agenda. Our doors are open to policies that promote transparency and ensure that the masses receive the dividends of democracy.”

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, emphasized that the Policy Dialogue reflects a shared commitment to fostering parliamentary transparency, accountability, and a citizen-driven legislature.

The Speaker said, “From the outset, we pledged to regularly engage with Nigerians, report on our performance, and adjust our direction based on public feedback. Today’s dialogue is part of that commitment. It also serves as a prelude to the forthcoming Open NASS Week, during which we will open our doors to public scrutiny and present our midterm progress.

Continuing, he said, “The aim is not only to celebrate our achievements but also to critically examine areas needing improvement in the spirit of democratic inclusion,”.

The Speaker further explained that the 10th House’s legislative agenda was developed through extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including Ministries, Departments, Agencies, civil society organizations, and development partners. These engagements produced a comprehensive roadmap to guide legislative work from 2023 to 2027.
According to him, the House took deliberate steps to align its legislative priorities with the “Renewed Hope” agenda of the Tinubu-led administration, ensuring synergy between the legislature and the executive.

“Our agenda promotes collaborative governance through constructive engagement with the Executive. This enables us to fulfil our independent mandate while aligning our legislative efforts with national priorities and addressing the critical needs of our citizens,” he added.

The Speaker said that the agenda encompasses eight broad priority areas, including strengthening good governance, enhancing national security, revitalizing the economy, reforming legal frameworks, and advancing social development, noting that “It also champions inclusion through an open Parliament, guides foreign policy in line with national interests, and addresses environmental and climate sustainability”.

He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to maintaining the highest transparency, inclusivity, and accountability standards, adding that, “We will uphold the same spirit of legislative courage that has brought us this far—the courage to enact necessary reforms for our nation’s progress, even when difficult,”.

Other keynote speakers at the event also expressed their willingness to partner with the House of Representatives to support robust legislative frameworks that promote inclusivity and good governance.

Kanu’s Trial: Court Admits Gulak’s Death Certificate

0

By Anthony Ochela, Abuja

‎The Federal High Court Abuja has admitted the medical report and death certificate of former presidential aide, Ahmed Gulak, as evidence in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing terrorism-related charges.

‎Justice James Omotoso, who presided over the proceedings, allowed the documents tendered by the prosecution through a witness identified simply as BBB, following no objection from the defence team led by Kanu Agabi (SAN).

‎The prosecution, led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), presented the documents, which included a police report from Owerri, Imo State, linking Gulak’s death to gunmen suspected to be members of IPOB.

‎During cross-examination, Agabi challenged the credibility and completeness of the video statement obtained from Kanu during DSS custody, stating that only the defendant and his team were visible in the footage.

‎The witness responded, “That is the procedure,” affirming it was the full recording.

When pressed further, he could not recall whether or not he wore a mask during the interview.

‎Agabi raised concerns over Kanu’s prolonged detention and alleged solitary confinement.

‎The witness, however, maintained that he was merely an investigator and not responsible for Kanu’s custody or welfare, saying: “Solitary confinement is not a practice of the DSS. I am not his handler,” he said.

‎The defence further questioned the legality of the prolonged detention, claiming it constituted “cruel and inhuman treatment,” but the witness insisted he was unaware of Kanu’s psychological state and said it was not part of his investigative duty.

‎Under further scrutiny, the witness said he was not involved in drafting the charges and could not confirm the dates of various charges and to what extent it was amended against the defendant.

‎Agabi asserted that the charges were “speculative,” to which the witness reiterated he is merely focused on investigation and not privy to matters relating to litigation.

‎The proceedings deadlocked after the lead counsel for the defendant informed the Court that he was yet to receive documents they had applied to get from the police to help their case.

Agabi therefore sought an adjournment which was objected to by Awomolo.

‎Citing prior orders of the Court on accelerated hearing, the prosecutor said there is a deliberate ploy by the defense to slow down the pace of the trial.

Awomolo told the court he was not aware of any application for documents.

‎He thereby prayed the Court to order the defense to continue with cross examination of the prosecution’s witness, noting there are five other witnesses waiting to give their testimonies.

He said the case had gone on for ten years due to the needless applications by the defence team.

‎In his intervention, Justice James Omotosho stated that though the practice direction provides for day to day trial in matters of this magnitude, in the interest of justice, however, he will grant the defence request for a short adjournment to enable them get the required documents.

‎Before adjourning, the judge sought clarification over claims that the Department of State Services (DSS) barred Kanu’s lawyers from accessing him.

Agabi dismissed such a claim, noting instead that he went to the DSS facility much earlier than the 2pm he was supposed to be there.

‎Justice Omotosho faulted Aloy Ejimakor, a member of the defence team, who made a social media post alleging being stopped by DSS from accessing their client in custody.

‎The judge cautioned Ejimakor against unprofessional conduct and urged all counsel to verify information before publishing, particularly on the social media.

‎The court subsequently has adjourned trial to 21 May at the instance of the Defense counsel.

APC National Security, Basiru Vows To Unset Adeleke, Says He Lacks Capacity To Lead Osun

0

The National Secretary, All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr Ajibola Basiru has disclosed that he is vying for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s seat due to his lack of capacity to lead the state to prosperity.

In a congratulatory message to celebrate the Governor’s 65th birthday issued by his media office on Wednesday, the former Senator said the governance of the state can no longer be entrusted into the hand of the governor.

The statement added that apart from the fact that the governor has no time to oversee governance in the state due to his constant travelling, he also lack quality hands to supervise activities in his absence.

“While we salute him on his birthday, we like to remind him that Sen. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru Ph.D is contesting to unseat him because of the obvious lapses he has noticed in the current administration in our dear state. The governance of our dear state cannot continue to be entrusted in the hands of someone like Governor Adeleke. We need a governor with idea and who is surrounded by development-driven individuals.

He cannot continue to use few days in Osun and the other remaining days outside. We would have pardoned his frequent travels if he had capable hands to leave the administration with but no. We have, together with our principal, consulted widely and that is why he has thrown his hat in the ring. He wants to salvage the plight of our people.

“One does not need anyone to say it to know that Osun’s agricultural sector is almost dead. Nothing seems to be working under the current administration. No single company has been established or opened under this current tenure. Tourism in Osun is at its lowest patronage.

“Our educational sector has nosedived. What do we expect when teachers are sacked and not replaced. The health sector is nothing to write home about. The money accrued to the state in the last 30months has been spent recklessly. The state government should publicly come out to tell the people how their funds are spent.

“A good leader doesn’t take the people to where they want, he takes them to where they ought to be. Our state is fast losing the gains of the past. So while we wish him all the best life can offer, we like to remind him that Sen. Basiru is contesting to unseat him. And we know the outgoing governor would be proud of his successor when he takes over from him in 2026,” the statement added.

The statement further stated that Basiru is not nursing any ill feelings against the Governor, saying we want to join the good people of Osun Stare to celebrate our governor and brother, His Excellency, Sen. Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke as he clocked 65. For us, we nurse no hatred against him especially as he celebrates his birthday. So we congratulate him. The politics we are all involved in is because of the betterment of our state.

“Being a knowledgeable people and apart from the fact that our principal is a lawyer by profession who adheres to the tenets of democracy, we don’t see politics as a do-or-die affair. When Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke defeated us in the last election, we respected the people’s wish”.

12th Edition of CNS National Swimming Championship Kicks Off July 15th in Asaba

…As NAF Lauds CNS for Restoring Swimming’s Lost Glory

By Joel Ajayi

The 12th edition of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) National Swimming Championship is set to hold from July 15 to 19, 2025, at the state-of-the-art swimming complex of the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

The prestigious event will feature participants in both junior and senior categories, drawn from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory. Athletes representing military and paramilitary agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Navy, Police, Civil Defense, and Customs, among others, will also compete.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Navy Headquarters in Abuja, Chairman of the Nigerian Navy Swimming Association, Rear Admiral P.C. Nwatu, emphasized that the CNS Swimming Championship is a key initiative in promoting youth development nationwide.

“We are proud to be part of this tournament. At the Nigerian Navy, we see this competition as part of our corporate social responsibility. For nearly 15 years, we have remained committed to it, and we are looking forward to introducing more innovations to improve it,” he said.

Rear Admiral Nwatu noted that the championship serves as a platform for talented young athletes to showcase their abilities and avoid being sidelined due to lack of opportunities.

“This platform enables youth to demonstrate their skills and be nurtured to reach the podium,” he added.

President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, Chief (Mrs.) Chinoye Daphey Aliyu, commended the Chief of Naval Staff and the Nigerian Navy for their steadfast support in developing aquatic sports in Nigeria.

She noted that the championship is a vital talent discovery platform, with the potential to identify and groom swimmers for the national junior team ahead of the African Junior Championships.

“The CNS Championship remains a cornerstone of our strategy to scout, nurture, and prepare elite athletes who will represent Nigeria at key international events, including the Africa Youth Games, the World Aquatics Junior Championships in August, and other global competitions throughout 2025,” she stated.

Chief Aliyu also praised the Nigerian Navy for restoring the lost glory of swimming in Nigeria, celebrating the nation’s recent achievements on the international stage. She highlighted that Nigeria broke two African records in the 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle events at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships held in Egypt. Team Nigeria clinched three gold medals and one bronze—an unprecedented feat in the nation’s swimming history.

She credited part of this success to the support of the Chief of Naval Staff, who deployed Lieutenant Commander Labake Oriretan—a former national champion and seasoned coach—to guide the national team during the competition.

The upcoming championship is expected to attract a wide range of participants, including representatives from states, swimming clubs, military and paramilitary bodies, and academic institutions. The Nigeria Aquatics Federation’s technical committee and national scouts will be on ground to evaluate performances and select exceptional swimmers for advanced training at the national camp.

Chief Aliyu concluded by calling on all stakeholders to support the championship, as Nigeria continues to rise in global aquatic sports.

Trump Meets Syria’s New Leader in Landmark Encounter, Lifts Sanctions

Trump Meets Syria’s New Leader in Landmark Encounter

President Trump on Wednesday met with Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in Saudi Arabia, marking a dramatic shift in global perceptions of the former Islamist fighter who was once tied to al Qaeda and targeted by a U.S. bounty.

Al-Sharaa’s forces led the offensive that captured Damascus and toppled longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad. He has since established himself as leader of a government promoting itself as inclusive and democratic.

Mr. Trump’s engagement with al-Sharaa — following similar actions by some European leaders — may significantly strengthen Syria’s new government as it seeks to restore relationships with Western nations after years of intense conflict and sanctions.

In a statement, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Mr. Trump told the Syrian leader he had “a tremendous opportunity to do something historic in his country,” and encouraged him to join the U.S.-backed Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel.

Mr. Trump also urged al-Sharaa to “tell all foreign terrorists to leave Syria; Deport Palestinian terrorists; help the United States to prevent the resurgence of ISIS,” and “assume responsibility for ISIS detention centers in Northeast Syria,” according to Leavitt.

The meeting included Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), Mr. Trump’s host in Saudi Arabia, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan via phone.

The meeting followed Trump’s announcement that his administration would lift U.S. sanctions on Syria, saying the move aimed “to give them a chance at greatness.”

“The sanctions were brutal and crippling, and served … an important function, nevertheless, at the time, but now it’s their [Syrians’] time to shine,” Mr. Trump said during his speech in Riyadh. “I say good luck, Syria. Show us something very special.”

Leavitt said “President Erdogan praised President Trump for lifting sanctions on Syria and committed to working alongside Saudi Arabia to encourage peace and prosperity in Syria. The Crown Prince also commended President Trump for his decision to lift the sanctions, calling it courageous.”

Al-Sharaa expressed gratitude to Mr. Trump, MBS, and Erdogan “for their efforts to put together the meeting, and recognized the significant opportunity presented by the Iranians leaving Syria, as well as shared U.S.-Syrian interests in countering terrorism and eliminating chemical weapons.”

The “Iranians” referenced by the White House were reportedly linked to the Assad regime’s allies in Tehran.

“President Al-Sharaa concluded with his hope that Syria would serve as a critical link in facilitating trade between east and west, and invited American companies to invest in Syrian oil and gas,” Leavitt said.

The White House also announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would meet with the Syrian foreign minister later this week in Turkey.

Mr. Trump is the first U.S. president since Bill Clinton in 2000 to meet with a Syrian leader, making this a historic diplomatic development. Sharaa, who previously led the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), rose to power quickly after Assad’s collapse. HTS evolved from the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, and Sharaa had also fought U.S. forces in Iraq in the early 2000s.

Until recently, Sharaa was subject to a $10 million U.S. bounty for leading HTS, which remains designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. Despite Assad’s ouster, longstanding U.S. sanctions continued — until Trump’s recent shift in policy, which is partly aimed at reducing Iranian influence in Syria and across the region.

Saudi Arabia is also rebuilding relations with Sharaa’s government, a move likely meant to counterbalance Iran’s reach in Syria, where Tehran and Moscow had supported Assad during the war.

Israel remains skeptical and has continued conducting airstrikes in Syria, frustrating Sharaa’s leadership.

Senator Lindsey Graham expressed caution, insisting the White House must consult Congress before changing sanctions policy. Graham, who is meeting U.S. and Turkish officials in Turkey, said he could support sanctions relief under the right conditions.

“I am very inclined to support sanctions relief for Syria under the right conditions,” Graham stated. “However, we must remember that the current leadership in Syria achieved its position through force of arms, not through the will of its people.”

He emphasized the importance of working with allies, particularly Israel, before lifting sanctions, adding: “Waiving congressionally passed sanctions is a complicated process… it has to be done in a coordinated fashion with our allies.”

Mr. Trump’s visit to Riyadh was the first stop of a four-day Middle East tour, which will also include Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. While in Saudi Arabia, he addressed a U.S.-Saudi investment summit, where the White House unveiled a $600 billion investment deal, including what it called the “largest defense sales agreement in history.”

France Pushes for Tougher Sanctions to Cripple Russian Economy

France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, on Wednesday urged the United States and European nations to devise stronger sanctions aimed at “suffocating” Russia’s economy to compel President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine.

While the EU approved a new sanctions package the same day, Barrot noted that previous punitive steps have yet to halt Russia’s offensive, which has entered its fourth year.

“We will have to go further, because these massive sanctions have not yet deterred Vladimir Putin from continuing his war of aggression against Ukraine,” Barrot told broadcaster BFMTV.

“We must prepare to impose devastating sanctions that could suffocate the Russian economy once and for all,” he said.

Barrot revealed plans to meet US Senator Lindsey Graham in Turkey on Thursday to discuss a US sanctions proposal Graham is currently developing.

Graham “has designed a package of extremely powerful sanctions”, with tariffs of 500 percent on countries that continue to import Russian oil, the French foreign minister said.

“Russia has found ways to circumvent the blockade imposed by Europe and the United States,” Barrot said.

“Turning off the tap in this way is a way of grabbing Russia by the throat,” he added.

“I hope that Europe will in turn be able to impose sanctions on hydrocarbons,” Barrot said.

Last Saturday, the leaders of France, Britain, Germany, and Poland jointly urged Russia to observe a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting this week, but the appeal has gone unanswered.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited Putin to personally attend the upcoming Russia-Ukraine talks in Turkey on Thursday, though Moscow has not confirmed its delegation.

On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe would impose more penalties if Russia did not comply with the ceasefire proposal.

The 17th sanctions package targets Russia’s “shadow” oil fleet. However, officials concede that this round is less extensive than prior ones due to challenges in reaching consensus among EU nations.

Pope Leo XIV Offers Mediation in Global Conflicts, Urges Christians to Remain in Their Homelands

Pope Leo XIV offered to mediate between leaders of countries at war on Wednesday, saying that he himself “will make every effort so that this peace may prevail”.

The new US pontiff, who became head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics last week, also called on Christians living in the Middle East not to abandon their homes, in a speech to members of the Eastern Catholic Churches.

“Who, better than you, can sing a song of hope even amid the abyss of violence?” he told the packed Paul VI hall at the Vatican, noting that “from the Holy Land to Ukraine, from Lebanon to Syria, from the Middle East to Tigray and the Caucasus, how much violence do we see!”.

He urged them to pray for peace, adding: “For my part, I will make every effort so that this peace may prevail.

“The Holy See is always ready to help bring enemies together, face to face, to talk to one another, so that peoples everywhere may once more find hope and recover the dignity they deserve, the dignity of peace.

“The peoples of our world desire peace, and to their leaders I appeal with all my heart: Let us meet, let us talk, let us negotiate!”.

Leo took over as pontiff from Pope Francis, who died on April 21 aged 88.

He was speaking at a pre-arranged event for the 2025 Jubilee holy year dedicated to the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches, located across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, India, and parts of Africa.

In his appeal to end conflicts — a dominant theme in his addresses so far — Leo thanked those “sowing seeds of peace”.

“I thank God for those Christians — Eastern and Latin alike — who, above all in the Middle East, persevere and remain in their homelands, resisting the temptation to abandon them,” he said.

“Christians must be given the opportunity, and not just in words, to remain in their native lands with all the rights needed for a secure existence. Please, let us strive for this!”
