FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, NUTGTWN, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for the establishment of the Textile and Garment Development Board.

The union, in a statement yesterday in Kaduna, signed by the President and General Secretary, Peters Godonu and Ali Baba,  respectively, to commemorate the 2025 Workers Day, said it is commendable that the current administration is walking the talk about re-industrialising the country and reviving the labour-intensive textile and garment industry.

They commended Vice President Kashim Shettima for his “call to resuscitate a sector that once clothed the people and powered the nation’s economy.”

According to the vice president, “The goal is not just regulation. It is a revival. This is our opportunity to re-industrialise, to empower communities and restore pride in local production.”

The textile workers, however, noted that the board would help to ensure regular upgrading of the textile value chain, improve labour productivity, maximise value-addition and formulate strategies and programmes that would reposition Nigeria’s textile sector for global competitiveness.

From Owen Akenzua, Asaba

Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has called for an all-inclusive approach towards mitigating the security challenges currently bedeviling the nation.

The governor made the call when he received in audience, participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course, EIMC, 2025 of the National Institute for Security Studies, NISS, Bwari, Abuja, who are on a study tour of the state, yesterday.

Governor Oborevwori, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Dr Kingsley Emu, stated that security is everyone’s business, hence the need for state and non-state actors to collaborate in security management.

He therefore called for a comprehensive security agenda that would integrate non-state actors into security governance to foster sustainable peace across the country.

The governor stated that in incorporating non-state actors as part of government’s peace building initiative, his administration set up a peace building committee with members drawn from communities, a step he said had helped to nip in the bud, security threats before they arise through early warning signals from intelligence gathering.

Oborevwori thanked  NISS for choosing Delta State for their study tour, assuring them of the state government’s support throughout the period of the tour.

NISS Director, Mr Hyginus Ngele said Delta was one of the states chosen for the tour with a view to study its perspective in handling security issues, its experiences, strategies and results.

He said the activities and outcome of the study tour would have profound implications for  security and developmental plans, while assuring that the report of the study tour would be made available to  government when ready.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to unlocking infrastructure investment through long-term private concessions, with a focus on highway development.

The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun disclosed this today in his office in Abuja, shortly after
chairing a high-level meeting with partners under the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI), reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to private sector-led infrastructure development.

The session, jointly held with the Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, convened concessionaires managing nine highway projects covering over 900km, with a combined value of ₦1.5 trillion and expected to be delivered under 25-year concession agreements.

HM Edun emphasised that private capital is essential to accelerating development, following Nigeria’s return to macroeconomic stability despite global shocks and reduced oil revenues.

We have stabilised the economy. Now, we must grow—faster, broader, and inclusively. Private-led infrastructure delivery is central to that mission, Edun stated.

He highlighted the successful concession of the Benin-Asaba highway as a proof of concept, already underway with support from institutional and global investors. He also relayed the Honourable Minister of Works’ directive that concessionaires demonstrate proof of funds to ensure timely mobilisation.

Senator Bagudu reaffirmed President Tinubu’s strategic shift toward private sector-driven infrastructure, enabling investors to recover costs via tolling while closing public financing gaps.

The initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda—anchored on fiscal discipline, strategic investment, and job creation.

With private sector partners on board, the Federal Government is poised to deliver on its promise of improving Nigeria’s infrastructure and driving economic growth, marking a significant step towards achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda’s objectives.

NTAC DG Salutes Nigerian Workers ON Workers’ Day

*Sues for Support for the Tinubu Administration’s Reforms to Make Life Better for All Nigerians

*Urges States, Private Organizations to Mend Salary Disparities Between workers in Federal institutions,States and Private Organizations

Director General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps,Rt.Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub has called for consummate improvement in the welfare of the Nigerian workers serving in the States and the private sector, saying workers everywhere in the world are in the heart of development and national progress and, therefore, deserve the best to maximize their output.

He added that this gesture was important in order to close the disparity that exists between the emoluments of federal government workers and those in the States and private organizations. While calling for a close scrutiny of the salaries of workers in the States and private institutions,he said it was no longer acceptable for workers to receive pays that can hardly take them home from work at the end of each day.

In a statement made available to his media handlers today in Abuja, the NTAC boss congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of the celebration of this year’s Labour Day. He described the workers as “the hands that fertilize the earth of national development and service to all” and urged them to continue to give their best in the service of the nation and humanity.

While calling for support for the Tinubu Administration to continue to make life better for workers and for all Nigerians, the former two-term federal lawmaker said the current Administration’s various reforms, particularly, with regards to the welfare of the Nigerian workers, had from the onset of the Administration indicated that Government this time was prepared to effectively prioritize the place of workers in Nigeria against the usual lip service by past Administrations.

Rt.Hon.Buba,who noted the 35% increase in the national minimum wage and salaries of workers in federal service across board, the increase in the allowance of the National Youth Service Corps members as well as various landmark incentives that are aimed at empowering the Nigerian worker for greater comfort and productivity, explained that these gestures were all indicative of the welfarist posture of the Tinubu Administration and called on other employers to cascade these gestures down to all employees for maximum impact.

He said:
“To make greater meaning in the lives of workers in Nigeria,State Governments and the private sector must find a way to demonstrate tangible empathy for the worker, who leaves home daily ,but does not have what he needs to take him back home.

” The Federal Government has continued to do its best for the workers, but other employers of labour must follow suit in order for these improvements in workers’ welfare to trickle down and make more meaning.Take for instance, the millions that are charged in private schools and compare them with the salaries teachers in such schools receive at the end of every month, you will now understand why there’s need for a closer look in that direction. This does not just happen in our schools alone.See our factories and our corporate firms, where workers are casualised with mere pittance at the end of the month!

“Things like that deserve our attention and, perhaps, that of the National Assembly, the Wages Commission and such institutions of Government for an effective review. In more developed climes, every worker has insurance and various other welfare plans that ensure that they work in comfort and safety. We are the ones to change all these. We are not expecting anyone to come here and address them for us,” the DG emphasised.

May 1st is celebrated across many parts of the world as Labour Day in honour of workers all over the world. The day is usually marked by activities that promote the interests of workers in all sectors of the economy.

Workers Day 2025: NHRC Stresses Need To Uphold Rights, Dignity Of Nigerian Workers

0

By Anthony Ochela, Abuja

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has extended its solidarity to all Nigerian workers reiterating that their untiring commitment continues to drive the nation’s progress, even amidst daunting economic challenges.

This is contained in a statement issued by Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, the Director Corporate Affairs and External Linkages of the Commission as the global community commemorates the 2025 International Labour Day otherwise known as Workers Day.

According to the statement, in commemorate the Day, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN said, Nigerian workers are facing unprecedented hardships due to high inflation rate which has significantly eroded the purchasing power of salaries, making it increasingly difficult for workers to afford basic necessities of life.

Dr. Ojukwu also noted that the soaring cost of transportation has further compounded these challenges, often hindering workers’ ability to commute to their workplaces, thereby affecting overall productivity.

He said the Commission notes with great concern the harsh economic realities occasioned by the recent economic reforms which has exacerbated poverty.

Dr. Ojukwu lamented that the development has rendered individuals vulnerable to preventive illnesses and deaths due to inadequate access to nutrition, and healthcare.

“While we commend the Federal Government for some of the initiatives so far taken to alleviate the economic hardship, we call for economic reforms that prioritize human dignity, social justice and the well-being of citizens.

“Nigerians deserves policies that ensure decent work, fair wages and access to essential services, which will enable them to live with dignity and hope for a better future” Ojukuw said.

Continuing, the Chief Human Rights Officer of Nigeria said the Commission has observed reports indicating that law enforcement agencies have at some times suppressed peaceful protests, organized by citizens and workers who attempt to draw attention to their grievances.

According to Dr. Ojukwu, “Such actions not only contravene the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but also stifle the democratic expression of concerns which is vital for national development.”

Dr. Ojukwu used the platform of the commemoration to call on the Federal Government to engage more in constructive dialogue, as promised during the end bad governance protests, one that fosters open communication channels with labour unions and workers’ representatives to collaboratively address their concerns.

He also emphasised the need to ensure that law enforcement agencies respect and uphold citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association in all aspects of their lives including economic concerns.

The NHRC Boss further urged labour unions to adopt more proactive measures in advocating for workers’ rights as they serve as robust platforms for voicing workers’ concerns and negotiating better conditions on their behalf.

The Learned Silk reiterated the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of Nigerian workers and ensuring that their voices are heard, respected, and acted upon.

He added that the International Labour Day serves as a strong reminder of the invaluable contribution of the Nigerian Workers to National Development.

International Labour Day is celebrated annually on the 1st of May.

Zamfara: NDM Condemns AYCF’s Call For State Of Emergency, Exposes Yerima Shettima’s ‘Political Opportunism’

0
zamfara

The Northern Democratic Movement (NDM), rejects the inflammatory and divisive call by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) and its Lagos-based leader, Yerima Shettima, for a state of emergency in Zamfara State.

The group described the demand as baseless and misguided, adding that it also exposes Shettima’s desperation to remain politically relevant despite his lack of grassroots legitimacy, moral authority, and practical solutions to the North’s challenges.

The NDM notes with dismay that Yerima Shettima, a self-appointed “leader” whose only connection to Northern Nigeria is his occasional incendiary press releases, has once again chosen to milk a former Zamfara governor through dubious means to promote his narrative.

While genuine Northern leaders are on the ground collaborating with communities and security agencies to address insecurity, Shettima issues reckless statements from the comfort of Lagos, a city far removed from the realities of Northwestern Nigeria, thanks to the chicken change he receives from a low-ranking minister.

Shettima’s AYCF lacks any meaningful structure, membership, or credibility in Northern Nigeria as it exists only as a platform for him to audition for patronage from political godfathers. His call for a state of emergency is a deliberate attempt to undermine the constitutional authority of Zamfara State’s democratically elected government and sow chaos for personal relevance.

The NDM suspects that a former governor who depleted Zamfara’s resources and failed to provide security and infrastructure has now resorted to using Shettima to distract the incumbent governor, who is committed to restoring peace in Zamfara.

The NDM categorically condemns the call for an emergency as a dangerous overreach that would destabilize Zamfara and set a harmful precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.

Security challenges in Zamfara require sustained, intelligence-driven strategies, not politically motivated grandstanding. Governor Dauda Lawal Dare’s administration has made measurable progress, including revitalizing community-led vigilance groups with improved training and oversight.

Gov. Dare also cooperated with federal reinforcements for targeted operations in hotspot areas while launching socio-economic programs to address the root causes of banditry, such as unemployment and rural neglect.

The NDM challenges Shettima to publicly disclose the last time he visited Zamfara to engage directly with affected communities.

We asked him to explain the AYCF’s tangible contributions to peacebuilding beyond issuing press statements, and his relationship with political interests benefiting from instability.

Shettima’s hypocrisy is glaring. While he pontificates on Zamfara’s security, he has never condemned the role of corrupt federal actors, illegal arms traffickers, or external sponsors of banditry. His sudden “concern” for Zamfara reeks of a paid agenda to scapegoat Governor Dare and destabilize the state for his benefactor, who has woefully failed to govern the state rightly when he held sway.

The NDM calls on President Tinubu and the National Assembly to disregard Shettima’s antics and focus on strengthening support for Zamfara’s security architecture.

The NDM added that the state will no longer tolerate charlatans who weaponize our people’s pain for fame. Yerima Shettima represents nobody but himself. True Northerners are working quietly to rebuild our region, not chasing headlines in Lagos. Zamfara’s government deserves support, not sabotage.

The NDM stands in solidarity with the people and government of Zamfara. We reaffirm our confidence in Governor Dare’s commitment to peace and call on all Nigerians to reject fear mongering by political jobbers like Yerima Shettima. Now is the time for unity, not toxic rhetoric.

Signed,
Hon. Ibrahim Sule Sarki
Convener, Northern Democratic Movement (NDM)
