While also thanking Ekiti people for entrusting them with the mandate to legislate, oversight, and represent them, the Speaker hinted that the assembly had gone digital with installation of a digital voting system on the floor of the House, as well as launching an in-house broadcasting platform that live-streams plenary sessions and committee hearings to all parts of the state.

In the same vein, the House of Assembly members moved the motion for the endorsement of Governor Oyebanji to continue his administration beyond 2026 to renew his social contract with the people of Ekiti State.

Speaking while moving the motion for the endorsement, which was ratified through a thunderous voice vote by the constituents, Hon. Jacob Adeyemi Awoniyi representing Moba constituency 2, who said Governor Oyebanji has demonstrated exemplary leadership and delivered transformative policies that have positively impacted the lives of Ekiti residents, emphasized that the Governor’s achievements in critical areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social welfare are clear evidence of his commitment to the state’s progress.

Operating under the aegis of South East Forum of Former Local Government Chairmen, the former helmsmen declared their support during a courtesy visit to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu on Tuesday at Umuahia, Abia State capital.

Led by the former chairman of Umunneochi Local Government of Abia State, Dr. Frank Osita, the former chairmen said that are ready to mobilize support across the state for the President.

They also commended the Deputy Speaker for his achievements at the legislature and for setting up the Renewed Hope Partners ,RHP, meant to showcase the legacies of the President.

Speaking on their behalf, Osita said: “It is my great pleasure to present your former colleagues to you. We have come to identify with you. We have come under the umbrella of south east forum of former local government chairmen, a strategic platform designed to unite former grassroots leaders from the region. With you here is just the Abia State Chapter.

“Recognizing the crucial role we play as local government chairmen and continue to play in community mobilization in governance and development at grassroots level, this forum seeks to harness our collective experiences, influence and network for greater good of the region.

“At the heart of our mission is a renewed commitment to align the Southeast with the opportunities embedded in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We aim to do this through meaningful engagement and partnership with the Renewed Hope Partners, a platform championed by you, our leader, the Deputy Speaker.

“This forum serves not just as a rallying point but as a think tank to drive inclusive development, policy alignment and grassroot advocacy, ensuring that the region is not left behind in the national development conversation. We have come to be of use to you. We are from the grassroots, we have the structure and the idea you came up with to assist Mr. President is a very laudable one. We assure you that we will go to every nook and cranny of our various communities to assist in bringing our people and selling this idea that you’ve conceived for the interest of not just Abia State but Nigeria as a whole”.

He said that as former local government chairmen, they possess a great wealth of experience in public service, encouraging them take the forum seriously.

“Today, we have something Nigerians are going to emulate, the Forum of former Local Government Chairmen. If that’s not a great idea I wonder what is. Its greatness is found in the fact that we will understand each other better, having walked on same path.

“We will not be afraid to help each other, one for all, all for one. Twenty two years ago I was a local government chairman. You know me better. I was attending meetings with you.

“Some of us have served local government, states and then federal. So in terms of wealth of experience, we are older. Age and experience have something it brings and one of those things is the ability to remember that power is transient. So when you’re in charge, be careful. Treat people with mutual respect because you will meet them soon out there.

“I’m happy that you’ve agreed to come together under one umbrella. Your wealth of experience cannot be wasted.

“Experience begets knowledge. I came out from the grassroots. I’m a believer in grassroots and I’m returning to the grassroots. Who are the grassroots  without the chairmen? You control the grassroots.

“Take this forum seriously. We are going to do it for the whole of the South East to increase vote for Mr. President.

From Ibrahim Goronyo, Sokoto

A significant blow to the Peoples Democratic Party ,PDP, in Sokoto State has come as many prominent supporters of the party, led by Alhaji Chika Sarkin Gishiri, Chairman of the Sokoto State Traders Associations defected to the All Progressives Congress ,APC.

The defection took place yesterday at the residence of Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the APC leader in Sokoto State.

A statement made by Bashar Abubakar, the spokesman of the Association during  their reception said , ” We have the desire to move the state forward as the reason for our decision to join the APC”.

The defectors assured the APC leadership of their commitment to working towards the development of Sokoto State.

According to Sarkin Gishiri, this mass defection is a significant setback for the PDP in Sokoto, as influential members of the business community have now joined the ruling APC.

Sarkin Gishiri reaffirmed his unflinching support to the current administration of the people-friendly and prolific Gov Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for more tangible developmental strides to be massively recorded in the State.

He appreciated the continued support being received from Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko since time immemorial, which he attributed to the successes of his myriad of business activities.

He later declared his total and unalloyed support to APC in the state as well as all the other leaders of the traders in the State.

Earlier in his speech, the former Chairman of the State Traders Association and the current chairman of Sokoto State Chamber of Commerce, Alhaji Ladan Almustapha, told the Senator that all the leadership of Sokoto State Traders Associations have now agreed to join the crusade towards making the politically and economically more formidable.

He commended Sen. Wamakko for his sterling leadership qualities, especially when he was the State Governor, opining those noble virtues were what further reinforced their trust and confidence in the man of the people.

Almustapha extolled the retinue of projects executed by the Ahmad Aliyu-led administration in the state within just two years in office.

In his response, the APC leader in the state, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, expressed gratitude and happiness for the welcome development even as he promised the defectors that they would be equally treated.

He said as leaders, there is no reason not to carry all the traders along, saying now that they have agreed to work together with the current administration in the state, the government will soon come to the immediate rescue of the entire Traders in the state by completing the ongoing renovation of the burnt Sokoto Central Market.

The former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator assured the traders that the state government is planning to provide huge support by giving them financial assistance to boost their businesses and bolster the socio-economic growth of the state.

Sen. Wamakko said that every trustworthy person in the state would testify that Sokoto is being transformed positively under the administration of the consummate Gov. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto.

He further assured that the current lingering water issues in the state will decisively be addressed, even as he assured that there will be a spike in the capacity of the State Water Board, the supply of potable water as well as its quality.

He challenged the traders for their inactions when the main water pipes were being removed by the PDP-led administration a few years back, which resulted in all the water shortages being experienced in the state.

He, however, assured them that more developmental strides would be witnessed under the leadership of Gov. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for the Sokoto State to be at par with its contemporaries or even surpass them.

The epochal ceremony was witnessed by many leaders of the state traders associations, notably, Alhaji Bello Bulaki, Alhaji Ibrahim Achida, Alhaji Nasiru Tukur Faru and Alh. Almustapha Ghani Mainiyyo.

Others who were part of the history-making were Alhaji Malami Zamau, Alhaji Falalu Ibrahim Maitakalma, Alhaji Ibrahim Ba ta yima Lamba, Alh. Sanusi Kware, Alhaji Sirajo Ibrahim Maitakalmi, and Alhaji Almu Abdu Maidala, among several others.

FG Backs Measles-Rubella Vaccine Rollout

0

Federal government has pledged  communication and advocacy  support for the upcoming nationwide Measles-Rubella, MR, vaccination campaign scheduled for October.

This assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, during a courtesy visit by the Centre for Well-Being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions, C-WINS.

A statement issued by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Malam Rabiu Ibrahim, in Abuja, yesterday,  praised the team’s commitment to public health and child wellbeing.

Idris affirmed the ministry’s readiness to champion public sensitisation efforts that would ensure the campaign’s success.

“You have come to the right place. The ministry of information and national orientation exists to support and amplify initiatives like this.

“We will work with you and relevant agencies under our ministry to ensure that Nigerians are well-informed about the dangers of Rubella and the need for vaccination.”

“Many Nigerians, like myself, may be familiar with measles, but are unaware of Rubella and its devastating effects.

“That children can be born blind, deaf or with heart defects due to maternal rubella infection is a tragedy we must work together to prevent,”: he said.

He emphasised the ministry’s readiness to co-develop strategic messaging and support public education efforts nationwide.

The minister also encouraged the team to engage the National Assembly for broader legislative support.

“We do not want this to be a one-off meeting, let us make this partnership continuous, impactful and far-reaching.

“Prevention is better than cure, and this is one area where information truly saves lives,” Idris said.

According to the statement, the delegation from C-WINS, led by the Project Lead, Dr Nihinlola Mabogunje, briefed the minister on the urgent need to raise public awareness ahead of the October campaign.

Mabogunje also delivered a comprehensive presentation on the life-saving importance of the Measles-Rubella vaccine.

She explained that it is an often-overlooked threat, especially to pregnant women.

According to her, contracting rubella in the first trimester can result in Congenital Rubella Syndrome, CRS, leading to babies born blind, deaf or with severe heart abnormalities.

Mabogunje assured Idris of the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness, noting that it has been used worldwide for over 50 years.

“It is credited with saving more than 94 million lives. I commend NAFDAC’s stringent regulatory review and endorsement of the vaccine for safe use in Nigeria.

“I  urge the ministry to lead a national communication effort to combat misinformation and build public trust.

“To reach the target of 95 percent vaccination coverage, we need accurate, trusted and consistent messaging delivered through the channels that everyday Nigerians rely on,” she said. NAN

DSS Prays Court To Bar Utomi, Associates From Holding Rallies

0

Department of State Services, DSS, has filed a fresh application against Professor Pat Utomi at the Federal High Court in Abuja over  alleged plans to hold rallies.

The DSS, in the application filed yesterday through its lawyer, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, before Justice James Omotosho prayed the court to restrain Utomi and his associates from  making public comments or engaging in rallies in relation to the planned “shadow government” formation.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the DSS had, earlier, dragged Utomi, the 2007 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, before Justice Omotosho over his alleged plan to establish what he called, “a shadow government” in the country.

The security agency, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/937/2025, prayed the court to declare the move as an attack on the constitution and Justice Omotosho had fixed June 25 for the hearing.

Meanwhile, the fresh motion filed before the presiding judge was against the reports that Utomi, who is said to be currently abroad, had planned to engage in protests, road shows, media interviews and related activities upon his return to the country on June 6.

In the application filed yesterday, the DSS sought one relief.

It prayed for an order of interlocutory injunction, restraining the defendant/respondent (Utomi), his agents from staging road shows, rallies, public lectures or any form of public gathering, newspaper publications, television programmes, jingles or any other public enlightenment programme.

The service, in its grounds of application, argued that, if not restrained, Utomi’s proposed rallies, road shows and actions would “constitute a serious threat to  public order, safety and national unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It noted that as the agency statutorily empowered to safeguard the internal security of the country and prevent any threats to lawful authority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and its constituent institutions, it is incumbent on it to forstal any threat to public order, safety and national unity.

It stated that before it filed the substantive suit, Utomi, a Professor of Political Economy and Management, had, through public statements, social media and other platforms, engaged in statements and actions aimed at undermining the outcome of the case now pending before the court, and which he is aware of.

The DSS said it gathered through monitoring and intelligence reports that Utomi plans “to stage road shows and rallies under the guise of freedom of speech and association in a bid to cause public discontent in furtherance of his establishment of the purported ‘shadow government/shadow cabinet.’

The plaintiff added, in a supporting affidavit, that the former presidential candidate’s intention “is to stage road shows and rallies that are capable of drawing a large number of Nigerians with intent to cause huge disruption of peace, breakdown of public order, enable riots and violent protests just as the recent “End SARS” protests in 2020.

“All the planned protests, riots and agitations that will ensue, if the purported actions of the defendant/respondent are not stayed, may lead to mayhem with a potential for anarchy, loss of lives and property.

“The proposed allies, road shows and actions of the defendant/respondent constitutes a serious threat to  public order, safety and national unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The DSS stated that on May 26 during the fourth edition of  Topaz Lecture Series, under the theme: “Shadow Government: A Distraction or Necessity,” hosted by the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Mass Communication Class of 1988 Alumni Association, Utomi made statements capable of undermining the pending suit.

It added that in the statements, widely publicised by various national newspapers and on social media platforms, he defended the creation of the purported shadow government and  stated that if the suit succeeds in favour of the DSS, himself and his group shall adopt a different name.

The agency added that Utomi had been served with the originating process in this suit and had entered appearance vide his Counsel, Professor Mike Ozekhome (SAN) since May 20.

“The defendant/respondent (Utomi) is aware of the pendency of this action before this court, as he has been served with the originating process in this suit by courier as ordered.

“Unless this  court intervenes by granting this application, the defendant/respondent’s acts may foist a fait accompli on the court.

“It is in the interest of justice, national security and the rule of law for this  court to grant this application,” the DSS said.

Speaking  after filing the fresh application, DSS lawyer, Kehinde, SAN, explained the rationale behind his client’s decision to approach the court.

Kehinde said: “We, as counsel to the DSS, have just filed an application seeking interlocutory injunction against the defendant and his group pending the determination of the substantive suit.

“The application, being a public document can be obtained from the registry of the  court.

“It is good that as members of the fourth estate of the realm, you are keeping watch over the case filed against the formation of ‘Shadow Government’ by Professor Utomi and his group.

“The civil suit, as you are aware, was filed by the  as DSS in consonance with its statutory mandate of ensuring internal peace and avoidance of any form of insurrection and treasonable felony against the democratically elected government in the country.”

He said the application was filed because Utomi had continued to make inflammatory statements capable of igniting chaos in the country instead of abiding by the hallowed principle that civilised parties before the court are expected to maintain  status quo pending the determination of the substantive matter.

“What our client has submitted to the court is for the interpretation of the constitution whether any form of government by whatever nomenclature can be formed or allowed outside the constitution.

“Furthermore, our client is not interested in arresting anybody in respect of this matter having on its own accord submitted itself to the jurisdiction of the  court to interpret the constitution and determine the legality or otherwise of the ‘Shadow Government’ or any other nomenclature that it may be so named.

“It must be pointed out that our client under its current leadership is a very civilised organisation with absolute confidence in the rule of law.

”Its personnel will always approach the court of law whenever it feels that there is any infraction on its statutory duties by anyone or the rights of its personnel. Let the court have the final say.

“Gentlemen, we must all ensure that constitutional democracy and the rule of law have its way in Nigeria,” Kehinde said. NAN

DSS Covert Operation Eliminates 45 Bandits In Niger

In a major breakthrough against banditry in the North Central, tactical operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, supported by the  military,  eliminated at least 45 armed bandits in a covert offensive near Kuchi town in Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

The precision-led raid, carried out in the early hours of Monday, June 2,  was described as a surprise ambush designed to preempt a large-scale attack being coordinated by notorious terror kingpin, Dogo Gide.

It was gathered that the operation successfully thwarted the movement of over 100 heavily armed fighters from Kaduna and Zamfara States who had converged on the area to launch coordinated attacks on nearby communities.

Sources disclosed that  DSS operatives deployed stealth tactics, including undercover surveillance and ambush strategies, to intercept the bandits on the outskirts of Kuchi town. A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the neutralisation of 45 insurgents, with others reportedly fleeing with injuries. Several motorcycles and sophisticated weapons were recovered at the scene.

According to security intelligence, the militants were mobilised from Bilbis forest in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara and other enclaves in Kaduna State on the invitation of Dogo Gide, who has been losing ground to increasing pressure from security forces in recent months.

“The operatives followed their movement with clear precision and struck before they could attack the villages. This is a major blow to Dogo Gide and his network,” a source said.

Five DSS personnel were wounded during the operation and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility. The latest offensive is said to be part of a broader campaign by security agencies to dismantle terror cells and reclaim communities under threat.

“This successful ambush comes shortly after the elimination of over 50 bandits in the same axis. The renewed heat on the terrorists is yielding results and we hope these efforts will be sustained.”

The DSS and military authorities are yet to release an official statement on the operation, but community members have expressed relief and hope that the intensified security measures will bring lasting peace to the region. PRNigeria

CDS

From CHARLES ONYEKWERE, Enugu

Chief of Defense Staff, CDS, General Christopher Musa, said the use of non-kinetic operational approach will enhance security, as well as build peaceful and resilient communities.

Musa said this in an address at the opening ceremony of a two-day Human Security and Civil-Military Cooperation, HIMIC, workshop  held at 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, yesterday.

The workshop was organised by the Defence Headquarters in collaboration with British Defence Staff.

Represented by a Director of Civil Military Relations, AVM Olushola Akinboyewa, the CDS said  the military is adopting better strategies to strengthen its non-kinetic operational approach.

According to him, in a world where conflict and tension often cloud our perspectives, embracing non-kinetic strategies allows us to navigate conflicts with dignity, fostering dialogue and collaboration with the civilian populace.

He said, “The nature of today’s threats, including insecurity in various forms, calls for an approach that integrates both kinetic and non-kinetic methods.

“The role of human security and civil-military cooperation in national development centers on bridging the gap between military efforts and civilian aspirations for peace and stability.

“By upholding human security values, we not only aim to neutralise threats, but also  protect and support the civilians affected by conflict.

“This workshop will delve into the complexities of human security and CIMIC, providing participants with the tools to mitigate the effects of military operations on civilian life.

“The success of a modern military  depends not only on operational victories, but also on our ability to enhance human security, build resilience and foster peace and development in conflict-affected regions.”

Musa noted that the workshop was particularly timely, “as we face multiple challenges in our nation’s security”, adding that responding effectively requires a “whole-of-society” approach, where every individual and institution contributes to peace and security.

“This approach, coupled with our commitment to non-kinetic strategies, is central to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and growth.

“Throughout this workshop, participants will explore frameworks that integrate human security into military operations, emphasising the critical role of CIMIC,” he added.

A personnel of the British Defence Staff, John Sanderson, said  the workshop would expose the participants to the importance of human security and protection of civilians in every field of operation.

Sanderson, who is the lead facilitator of the workshop, noted that its essence is to build trust between military personnel and civilians in order to build a seamless relationship that works for all.

In a welcome address, the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 82 Division, Major-General Oluyemi Olatoye, appreciated the CDS and  British Defence Staff for hosting the  national workshop in the

Division.

Olatoye, who is also the Commander of the Joint Task Force in the South East, code-named ‘Operation Udo Ka’, noted that the Division had upheld respect for human rights in all its operations, adding that the workshop would  improve all aspects of civil-military relationship.

Participants at the workshop were drawn from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, FRSC, DSS, Nigerian Immigration Service, Customs, NDLEA and Nigerian Correctional Service among others.

The opening ceremony featured group photographs and exchange of plaques between the GOC and representatives of the CDS.

Djokovic beats Zverev to set up Sinner semi-final

Novak Djokovic continued his quest for a standalone record 25th Grand Slam title by swatting aside third seed Alexander Zverev to reach the French Open semi-finals.

The 38-year-old sixth seed won 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 to set up a meeting with world number one Jannik Sinner on Friday.

Djokovic, who has three Roland Garros titles, lost the opening set to 2024 runner-up Zverev after being broken in the first game of the match.

But the Serb great did not drop serve again, although he had to survive a 41-shot exchange on break point at 3-2 in the fourth set on his way to sealing a record-extending 51st Grand Slam semi-final appearance.

“My way of playing is based on running, but at my age it’s not so easy to run so much,” said Djokovic, who is the second oldest man to reach the French Open semi-finals.

There he will face Sinner, who cruised into the last four with a ruthless straight-set victory over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik earlier on Thursday.

The Italian is still yet to drop a set at Roland Garros after winning 6-1 7-5 6-0 and bringing 62nd-ranked Bublik’s remarkable run to an end.

Sinner is hunting a first title on the Paris clay after previously only gone as far as the semis, losing a five-set thriller to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz last year.

Djokovic or Sinner will meet the winner of defending champion Alcaraz and Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who also play on Friday.
