From Richard Akintade, Osogbo

“The one we are referring to is  the one been organised by the Omoluabi group been led by former governor, Rauf Aregbesola, we are discouraging our members who are loyal party APC member to not go there to register because Omoluabi as a group is not a member of our party in Osun State.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the inauguration of the train the trainers and workshop for the electronic membership registration will hold today in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as announced by the National Chairman of our party, Dr Abdulhai Ganduje, therefore, any ongoing or previous registration in recent time is unknown to any party organs. This clarification is very important as a result of speculations and intentions of some marauders to mislead unsuspecting members of the party.

“Rauf Aregbesola in as far as we are concerned in Osun APC, we have been saying it severally that he is no more member of APC in Osun State.

“We have taken steps three times to notify the national secretariat that Aregbesola is giving us distractions in APC affairs in the state and then the party at the national should do the needful in dealing with him. He is a national figure, we know. But if we can not handle his case in this state, we have refer his matter to national secretariat and I know, soonest that they are going to act on it”.

The meeting commended the leadership of the State Executive Committee under the  chairmanship of Alhaji Tajudeen Lawal for the efficient management of the party and at the same time, acknowledged the resilience, loyalty and commitment of the party members across the state especially in this trying period as an opposition in the state.

Foremost lawyer and rights activist, Femi Falana has has said all states can pay the minimum  wage, following funds accrual from the removal of fuel subsidy.

Appearing on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Falana said, states that default would be dragged to court.

He said: “There is no state in Nigeria today that cannot pay more than the minimum wage because the government removed fuel subsidy last year and President Tinubu told Nigerians that the money made from that policy will be used.

“Any state government or employer of labour that does not pay the national minimum wage, we have agreed this time around (our law firm and the labour unions) we are not going to allow the non-payment of wages. They will be dragged to court.

“We are going to ensure the law is complied with, including the fact that we will be paying the court to make an order, deducting what belongs to the workers monthly from the source in Abuja. We cannot go like this”.

This is coming against the backdrop of the federal government’s agreement with organized labour over the payment of a new national minimum wage for workers.

Labour which embarked on an indefinite strike had called it off on Tuesday following negotiations and agreement.

The Q1 Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, had demanded N464,000 as a new minimum wage but the government proposed N60,000.

Former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen has frowned at the low number of women in decision making in Nigeria.

Tallen, a former Deputy Governor of Plateau State who bared her mind in Abuja while speaking to newsmen, noted that Nigerian women have paid their dues and ought to be given more participatory space in the governance of the country.

The former minister of state for science and technology, however, commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing more women into his cabinet.

She expressed appreciation to God for giving her the grace to serve the nation in various capacities so far.

“The bible teaches us that in every situation we should give thanks to God. So I thank President Tinubu for the position he has given women so far, but to be honest, we are not yet there.

“Nigerian women have paid their dues. They were at the forefront of his campaign, not only for Tinubu, but in every election.

“They are the engine room of any campaign. Come rain, come sunshine they are always there and for that we deserve more. In as much as we thank the president, we thank his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for advocating very strongly for women, carrying them along, but we are not yet close at all,” she said.

On Nigeria’s stand for 35 percent Affirmative Action for women, Dame Tallen observed that the country is yet to measure up.

According to her, “The 35 percent affirmative action, we are not close, though the president has not finished his appointments yet. Most of the parastatals and ambassadorial appointments are yet to come out; so we pray and hope that he will make up in these areas.”

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG, in charge of the South-West Zone, Sylvester Alabi has urged officers in Ogun State to shun anti-human rights behaviour capable of tarnishing the image of the force in order to change the negative narrative that members of the public have against the police.

He also sought Governor Dapo Abiodun’s support on security facilities to assist them work effectively in combating crime and criminality in the state in order to ensure the safety and properties of the citizenry.

Alabi, who made the appeal when he visited Ogun State on Tuesday on a one-day tour, charged the officers to eschew acts of police brutality and exploitation from members of the public so that they could change their negative perspective about them and earn their trust on security matters

He said his visit was in compliance with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, that all DIGs should visit their geopolitical zones to interact and interface with various police officers on professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

The DIG, who also oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, Abuja, advised police officers to imbibe the spirit of discipline, hard work and take advantage of training programmes and opportunities, as well as discharge their duties within the confines of the law to erase the negative narrative from members of the public and command respect for themselves.

Alabi, who disclosed these during a courtesy visit to the governor in Abeokuta to thank him for his friendly collaboration with the police, appealed for more support on facilities and equipment.

He assured of the police readiness to ensure the security of lives and properties.

Responding, Governor Abiodun said the state would continue to collaborate with the police on security matters to ensure a peaceful environment for investors, as well as secure the lives and properties of the people.

“It is indeed a pleasure to receive you this afternoon. I want to appreciate the commissioner of police and his team for doing a good job in the state. Group Begs Tinubu To Appoint PLWD As Humanitarian Minister

0

FROM RAHILA ABDULLAHI, KADUNA

Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to appoint one of them, Halimat Tejuosho, as a Minister.

Speaking on behalf of 100 coalition groups at a meeting in Kaduna, recently, Comrade Aliyu Sani maintained that the aim of organising the press conference was to join other groups and individuals to drum support for Tejuosho to be considered Minister of Humanitarian Affairs.

“Today, we join People Living With Disabilities, PLWDs, across the 36 states and the FCT, as well as All Progressives Congress, APC, PLWD leaders in the 36 states and other stakeholders including senators, APC stalwarts, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, credible and objective observers and youth parliaments across the country who have been agitating and consulting widely for the appointment of this seasoned personality.

“As a selfless patriot who has been using her personal resources to bring succour to senior citizens, PLWDs and the less privileged through her well thought out Queen Adenike Tejuosho Foundation, QATFoundation, giving her a position of responsibility in line with her passion and interest will energize her to do more for the downtrodden.

“As a mark of true philanthropy, she recently celebrated Children’s Day with vulnerable and indigent children where over 500 school books, bags, shoes, water bottles, foodstuffs and writing materials were shared.

“Her Ramadan largesse to over 1,000 PLWDs, as well as Sallah packages to hundreds of households who could not afford to celebrate the festivities cannot be forgotten”, he added.

Judging by individual sacrifices and the sheer passion to touch lives, the coalition appealed to Mr President to urgently consider filling the vacuum created by the suspension of Dr Betta Edu by appointing Tejuosho as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to enable Nigerians enjoy the dividends of democracy in line with the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, especially in the area of poverty alleviation.

“It goes without saying that since the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has been without a minister, government is failing in providing basic succour to the less privileged.

“From her antecedents and if given the opportunity, she will continue to extend her generosity and passion to turnaround the fortunes of the less privileged and downtrodden in Nigeria”, the statement noted.

On the argument that Tejuosho is not from the South-South region where the former minister hailed from, the coalition stated that her maternal home is Delta State which makes her a full-blooded South-South person even though her father is from Lagos State.

“We do not want to trivialise the issue of origin and region as competence and merit should trump issues of origin and other differences that only serve to divide rather than unite us.

“It is, therefore, our earnest appeal to Mr President to consider appointing this noble, hardworking and dedicated humanitarian and party stalwart as minister”, he added.

The coalition reiterated the support and efforts made by the PLWD community in Nigeria who worked for the election of Mr President and appealed to him to grant their only wish.
