Former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro is scheduled to stand trial in the United States on June 1, 2027, following a ruling by a US judge on Wednesday, according to the claims contained in the report.
The report alleged that Maduro, who was described as Venezuela’s ousted leader, was captured during a United States military operation in January before being transferred to the US to face criminal charges.
Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, have reportedly remained in custody at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn for more than seven months.
According to the report, both defendants pleaded not guilty to charges bordering on drug trafficking and firearms-related offences after being arraigned before a US court.
The judge fixed June 1, 2027, as the date for the commencement of their trial.
The case is expected to attract significant international attention given Maduro’s long-standing political role in Venezuela and the diplomatic implications surrounding the proceedings.
