Traffic movement was severely disrupted along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday after emergency officials commenced recovery operations following a lone crash around the Kara Bridge axis.
The accident led to a temporary suspension of vehicular movement on the affected section of the highway as emergency responders worked to evacuate the crashed vehicle and clear the road for normal traffic.
As recovery efforts progressed, motorists travelling along the corridor experienced significant delays, with long queues of vehicles building up in the area.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a traffic advisory shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, confirmed that the recovery exercise was ongoing and had affected the free flow of traffic on the expressway.
According to the agency, traffic officials temporarily halted vehicular movement to allow recovery teams carry out the operation safely.
“The traffic backlog has stretched to New Garage and beyond, causing delays for motorists travelling towards Ogun State,” LASTMA stated.
The development resulted in heavy congestion along the section of the expressway leading towards Ogun State, with commuters forced to endure extended travel times while the operation continued.
Despite the disruption, LASTMA noted that motorists travelling from the Mowe-Ibafo axis towards Lagos were not significantly affected, as traffic in that direction remained smooth and uninterrupted.
The agency appealed to motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic management personnel deployed to the area while efforts to clear the accident scene continued.
It also advised road users to obey traffic directives to ensure the safe and efficient restoration of traffic flow.
Meanwhile, LASTMA provided an update on a separate traffic incident involving a fallen containerised truck at the Cater Bridge corridor.
According to the agency, the truck had been successfully removed from the roadway, allowing normal vehicular movement to resume in the area.
The authority said the successful evacuation had eliminated the obstruction that previously affected motorists using the bridge.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring smooth traffic movement across Lagos and urged motorists to remain cautious while driving, particularly in areas where emergency response or recovery operations are underway.
The agency further encouraged road users to observe traffic regulations and stay alert while travelling on major highways to minimise accidents and improve road safety.
