The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released two prominent members of the Obidient Movement, Peter Akah and Oruche Precious, popularly known as Mama Pee, after several hours of interrogation at its headquarters in Abuja.
The duo, both known for their support of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, honoured an invitation by the anti-graft agency on Wednesday and were released at about midnight.
Although they regained their freedom, the EFCC directed them to return on Thursday as investigations into the matter continue.
The development was confirmed by activist Chidiebere Mark, popularly known as Justice Crack, who accompanied the two supporters to the EFCC headquarters after they arrived at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
In a post shared on X, he described the process as lengthy but confirmed that they were eventually allowed to leave.
“It was a very long day. They were eventually released at around 12:00 a.m. and were asked to return the following day, 16th July 2026,” he wrote.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, concerns had spread across social media after reports emerged that Akah and Mama Pee were being questioned by the anti-graft agency, with supporters expressing anxiety over their whereabouts.
Providing further clarification, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who is representing the pair, explained that the EFCC’s invitation was connected to allegations bordering on abuse of the naira.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Effiong disclosed that the invitation followed separate letters dated June 24, 2026, asking his clients to appear before the Commission.
According to him, the legal team had requested a new date because the original appointment was not convenient for the two supporters.
“I can confirm that they were invited by the EFCC to appear on 6th July 2026, to offer clarifications over allegation of abuse of the Naira by separate invitation letters dated 24th June, 2026.
“We wrote to the Commission to reschedule the meeting to Wednesday, 15th July, 2026 since our clients were not available on the originally scheduled date.
“We arrived at the Commission with Peter for Nigeria and Mama Pee on Wednesday and met with the investigators,” he said.
Effiong stated that his clients cooperated fully with investigators and were subsequently released after the questioning.
“After cooperating with the Commission, our clients were released and we departed the EFCC headquarters. We will be returning today in furtherance of the investigation.
“During the interrogation on Wednesday, which took considerable time, the Commission acted professionally.
“Our clients clarified that what was referenced were prop money for entertainment and not naira notes. They are in high spirits and appreciate the concerns expressed by Nigerians regarding their safety.”
According to the lawyer, the notes referenced in the allegation were not genuine Nigerian currency but movie prop money used for entertainment purposes.
The incident comes just days after Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, alleged that opposition figures were increasingly being targeted by the Federal Government and subjected to actions that make it difficult for them to operate freely.
