The United Kingdom has reaffirmed that Nigerian citizens and nationals of 32 other African countries must continue to obtain visas before travelling to or transiting through the country.
The clarification follows an update to the UK’s immigration guidance issued by the Home Office, which outlines the nationalities that require entry clearance for visits lasting up to six months.
According to the updated guidance, the visa requirement remains in place for citizens of more than 100 countries and territories unless they qualify for specific exemptions under UK immigration rules.
The Home Office explained that the policy also applies to passengers making connecting journeys through the United Kingdom.
This means travellers passing through British airports on their way to another destination may also be required to obtain a transit visa depending on the nature of their journey and immigration status.
The guidance further states that stateless individuals and travellers using documents other than officially recognised national passports or identity cards must secure entry clearance before commencing their trips.
British authorities advised intending travellers to verify their visa requirements before booking flights to avoid unnecessary disruptions.
According to the Home Office, passengers who fail to meet the UK’s immigration requirements may experience delays, travel interruptions or even be denied boarding by airlines.
The government said the updated guidance forms part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen border management and ensure compliance with existing immigration regulations.
The United Kingdom remains one of the most popular destinations for African travellers seeking higher education, business opportunities, tourism and family visits.
Every year, thousands of Nigerians and other African nationals travel to the UK for academic programmes, professional engagements and personal reasons.
The latest immigration guidance confirms that citizens of the following African countries remain subject to the UK’s visa requirement:
Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The Home Office emphasised that prospective visitors should carefully review the applicable immigration requirements before travelling to ensure they possess the appropriate documentation.
Officials noted that complying with visa regulations before departure helps minimise travel complications and facilitates smoother entry procedures for eligible travellers.
