The Labour Party, LP, has announced Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Konto will contest alongside the party’s presidential flag bearer, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, in the forthcoming presidential race.

The party said her emergence followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders and was driven by its desire to present Nigerians with a leadership team anchored on competence, integrity and inclusiveness.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ken Asogwa.

According to Asogwa, Konto brings decades of experience in public health, humanitarian service and community development, having spent more than 30 years working across Nigeria’s healthcare and humanitarian sectors.

He explained that she retired from Catholic Relief Services after occupying several strategic positions, including serving as Community and Government Liaison Officer.

During her time with the organisation, she coordinated humanitarian interventions across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states, particularly in programmes supporting internally displaced persons and other vulnerable communities affected by conflict.

The party noted that Konto is a trained nurse, midwife and public health specialist with a Master’s degree in Public Health.

She also has experience in academia, having lectured in Community Health.

Currently, she serves as a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria and is the National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).

Asogwa highlighted her ability to communicate across different regions, stating that she is fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura.

According to him, her multilingual ability has enabled her to lead engagements with government institutions, traditional rulers, development partners and civil society organisations on issues relating to healthcare, nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and humanitarian programmes.

“She retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in several leadership roles, including Community and Government Liaison Officer. She worked extensively in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, coordinating response and mobilisation efforts for internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups.

“A trained Nurse, Midwife and Public Health Specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health. She has also lectured in Community Health and currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. “Fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, Konto has led engagements with government, traditional institutions and civil society on health, nutrition, WASH and humanitarian programmes,” Asogwa said.

The Labour Party stated that her nomination reflects its commitment to promoting gender inclusion, strengthening national unity and presenting experienced leaders from different parts of the country.

The party described Konto as a leader who combines compassion, administrative expertise and a practical understanding of Nigeria’s social and economic challenges.

It added that her experience working with women, children and communities affected by insecurity would complement the vision of the presidential candidate.

According to the party, the Okereke/Konto ticket represents a new generation of leadership committed to rebuilding public confidence, revitalising the economy, strengthening institutions and improving security across the country.

The Labour Party called on Nigerians to support the presidential ticket as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
