Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has once again called on Nigerians to adopt home gardening as a practical way of improving food security after harvesting fresh vegetables from her garden at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to a report shared by the Nigerian Television Authority on its official X account on Tuesday, the First Lady visited the Presidential Villa garden on Monday to harvest another batch of vegetables cultivated under her Every Home A Garden initiative.

The visit formed part of her routine inspection of the vegetable plot, which was established approximately two years ago to promote household farming and encourage Nigerians to produce some of their food at home.

The report indicated that the garden has continued to thrive, producing a variety of nutritious vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin.

Following the harvest, Senator Tinubu distributed some of the fresh vegetables to members of her staff, using the opportunity to encourage acts of kindness and generosity.

She urged Nigerians to cultivate the habit of sharing with others, stressing that compassion and community support remain important values that strengthen society.

The Every Home A Garden initiative forms part of the First Lady’s broader campaign to improve food availability, encourage healthy nutrition and reduce the financial burden of feeding families amid rising food prices.

Aljazirah recalls that the First Lady officially unveiled the vegetable garden at the Presidential Villa in July 2024 under her Renewed Hope Initiative.

The programme was introduced to inspire women, families and communities across the country to establish vegetable gardens within their homes regardless of available space.

The launch also featured the introduction of the Every Home A Garden competition, aimed at rewarding households that actively cultivate vegetables while promoting sustainable food production nationwide.

At the inauguration of the project, the First Lady explained that the garden was designed to demonstrate that even limited spaces around homes could be transformed into productive gardens capable of supplying fresh and healthy vegetables.

She noted that home gardening could help families lower food costs while improving access to nutritious meals.

The Presidential Villa garden was initially planted with several vegetables and herbs, including spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, scent leaf, ewedu, okra and lemongrass.

Since its establishment, the garden has continued to serve as a practical example of the First Lady’s advocacy for household farming, healthier living and environmental sustainability.

The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to encourage Nigerians to become more self-reliant in food production while complementing government programmes aimed at addressing food insecurity across the country.
