A Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has ordered the remand of three suspects allegedly connected to the killing of veteran broadcaster Kitan Oyesiku and her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, for an initial period of 60 days.
The order was issued on Monday by Chief Magistrate O. T. Odubanjo of Court 3 following an ex parte application brought before the court by the Nigeria Police Force.
Oyesiku, a retired broadcaster with the Ogun State-owned television station, was reportedly murdered on Saturday, June 20, at her residence located in Agodo Village in the Kobape area of Abeokuta.
The 67-year-old media professional was found dead inside her apartment after relatives and neighbours raised concerns about her whereabouts.
According to investigators, her body was discovered lying face-up in a pool of blood, with blood-stained tissue paper found beside her.
Her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, was also found dead within the premises, with his body reportedly locked inside the security post.
The gruesome incident prompted an intensive police investigation, during which officers recovered the deceased’s missing vehicle and arrested three suspects believed to be linked to the crime.
Among those arrested were a former security guard of the late broadcaster, another security guard and a bricklayer.
The suspects were subsequently arraigned before the Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Presenting the application, the Legal Officer attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, A. S. Abiodun, informed the court that the police were seeking an order to keep the suspects in custody pending the conclusion of investigations and legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Abiodun explained that the application, dated July 6, was filed pursuant to Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ogun State, 2017, as well as under the inherent jurisdiction of the court.
He further stated that the request was supported by a 24-paragraph affidavit deposed to by ASP Saka, an officer attached to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
According to the police legal officer, the application was accompanied by 17 documentary exhibits and a written address outlining the reasons for the request.
He urged the court to grant the application in the interest of justice and to allow investigators adequate time to complete their inquiries.
After considering the arguments presented, Chief Magistrate Odubanjo granted the application and ordered that the suspects be remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre for 60 days at the first instance.
The remand order, the court ruled, would remain in effect while the police await legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine the next line of action, including arraignment before a court with the appropriate jurisdiction to try the case.
The matter was subsequently adjourned until September 10, 2026, for further proceedings.
