Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have neutralised two suspected kidnappers and recovered a firearm, cash and other exhibits during a follow-up operation connected to the rescue of a kidnap victim in the state.
The operation was carried out by officers attached to the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in kidnapping and other violent crimes across Ogun State.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the victim was abducted on June 11, 2026, at Ogbe Village in Ogun State.
The police explained that immediately after receiving the report, the command activated its Anti-Kidnapping Unit and deployed intelligence assets and tactical teams to secure the victim’s release and track down those responsible.
The statement noted that sustained intelligence gathering, surveillance operations and coordinated pressure on the criminal gang eventually led to the victim’s release on June 18 without any physical harm.
Following the successful rescue, the police intensified efforts to identify and apprehend members of the syndicate responsible for the abduction.
Acting on credible intelligence, operatives traced suspected members of the gang to a hideout within the state.
According to the police, the suspects attempted to evade arrest by engaging security operatives in a gun battle.
“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire in a desperate attempt to resist arrest and escape. The operatives responded professionally, leading to a gun duel during which two of the suspected kidnappers were neutralised, while other members of the gang fled the scene with gunshot injuries,” the statement said.
A search conducted after the exchange of gunfire led to the recovery of a single-barrel firearm from one of the deceased suspects.
Further examination of the scene also resulted in the recovery of an expended cartridge, a mobile phone and a cash sum of ₦2.2 million believed to be proceeds from criminal activities.
The police disclosed that efforts were ongoing to track and arrest the fleeing members of the gang while investigations continue into the group’s activities and possible links to other criminal operations within and outside the state.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its professionalism, bravery and operational efficiency.
He said the outcome of the operation demonstrated the command’s commitment to aggressively pursuing kidnappers and other violent offenders wherever they operate.
Ojajuni assured residents that the command would continue to rely on intelligence-driven policing strategies and tactical interventions to safeguard lives and property across the state.
He also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid efforts to combat criminal activities.
