Governor Agbu Kefas has approved the immediate suspension of all mining activities across Taraba State following security concerns raised by intelligence reports.
The state government announced that the decision was taken after receiving credible security information indicating the existence of threats capable of disrupting the peace and stability currently being enjoyed by residents of the state.
The directive affects all forms of mining operations and takes immediate effect across the state.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Gebon Kataps, the government explained that the suspension is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives and property while security agencies address the identified threats.
According to the statement, the state government plans to establish a new task force that will oversee mining activities and ensure that operations are conducted safely and responsibly once the prevailing security concerns have been resolved.
The government noted that mining activities would only resume after the security situation has been thoroughly assessed and appropriate safeguards have been put in place.
Kataps directed all local government councils and traditional rulers across the state to ensure strict compliance with the suspension order.
He also urged community leaders and residents to cooperate with authorities by reporting any suspected violations of the directive to the nearest security agency.
“Any suspected violation must be reported immediately to the nearest security establishment. The government will view any breach of this directive with serious consequences,” the statement said.
As part of efforts to engage stakeholders, the state government disclosed plans to meet with artisanal miners next week.
The meeting is expected to provide miners with updates on the security situation, outline new vigilance measures and discuss future frameworks for regulating mining operations within the state.
The government reiterated its commitment to balancing economic activities with public safety, stressing that mining would only be allowed to continue under a secure and properly regulated environment.
Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and support security agencies by providing useful information on suspicious movements or activities that could threaten peace and security in the state.
The administration maintained that safeguarding lives and property remains a top priority and assured citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain stability while laying the foundation for safer mining operations in the future.
