The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Katsina State Police Command to strengthen security measures around schools across the state in a renewed effort to protect students, teachers, and educational facilities from criminal threats.
The directive was conveyed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Department of Finance and Administration, Sulaiman Abdul, during a two-day operational visit to Katsina State.
The tour focused on assessing security arrangements in selected schools and evaluating the overall safety architecture surrounding educational institutions in the state.
Speaking during the visit, Abdul said the Inspector-General had mandated the command to intensify efforts aimed at preventing attacks on schools and ensuring that learning environments remain safe and secure.
According to him, police formations across the state have been instructed to improve surveillance, increase visibility around schools, and strengthen intelligence gathering to detect and prevent potential security threats.
“The command is ordered to intensify patrols, strengthen intelligence gathering and maintain high police visibility around educational institutions to prevent violent crimes and guarantee a safe environment for teaching and learning,” he said.
As part of the assessment exercise, the DIG visited the Police Children School and the Government Girls Technical and Commercial College located in Charanchi Local Government Area.
During the inspections, he examined existing security infrastructure, including perimeter fencing, access control systems, security posts, and the deployment of police personnel assigned to protect the institutions.
The visits were aimed at determining the effectiveness of current security arrangements and identifying areas requiring improvement.
Abdul also held separate meetings with school administrators and management teams to obtain firsthand information about security concerns affecting their institutions.
He encouraged school authorities to remain vigilant and work closely with security agencies in addressing emerging threats.
The DIG stressed the importance of enforcing strict access control procedures within school premises, noting that effective monitoring of visitors and movements within educational institutions is critical to maintaining safety.
He further advised administrators to promptly report suspicious activities, unfamiliar individuals, or unusual developments within and around school environments to the police and other relevant security agencies.
The renewed focus on school security comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to protect educational institutions from criminal activities, particularly in northern states where concerns over attacks on schools have heightened in recent years.
Police authorities maintain that safeguarding schools remains a priority and that stronger collaboration between security agencies, school management, parents, and local communities is essential to preventing security breaches.
The Katsina State Police Command is expected to implement the directive through increased patrol operations, enhanced intelligence-driven policing, and sustained engagement with stakeholders in the education sector.
Security officials say the measures are designed to reassure parents, students, and educators while ensuring that teaching and learning activities continue without disruption.
The police leadership reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged continued support for efforts aimed at creating a secure and conducive environment for education across Katsina State.
