FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Federal Government has announced Friday, June 12, as a public holiday to celebrate Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance and the principles that underpin the nation’s political system.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement released on Thursday in Abuja on behalf of the Federal Government.

The statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, described June 12 as a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, recognising the sacrifices, determination, and resilience of citizens who played crucial roles in the struggle for democratic rule.

According to the statement, the significance of the date extends beyond a public celebration, as it serves as a reminder of the efforts and contributions of Nigerians who fought to ensure the country embraced democratic governance.

“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country. Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the statement read.

The minister reiterated the administration’s dedication to safeguarding democratic values and strengthening institutions that promote accountability, transparency, the rule of law, and inclusive governance.

He noted that the Federal Government remains focused on ensuring these principles continue to guide policy implementation and public administration across the country.

The statement further highlighted the importance of security in sustaining democracy, stressing that government agencies remain committed to protecting lives and property nationwide.

According to the ministry, efforts are ongoing to enhance internal security operations in collaboration with relevant security agencies to create a stable environment necessary for democratic development and national progress.

“The administration has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise.

“The Ministry of Interior, in coordination with relevant security agencies, will continue to maintain and strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property across the country. A secure and stable environment, the Minister noted, is essential to the health of any democracy and to the broader project of national development.”

Tunji-Ojo also encouraged Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity to reflect on their civic responsibilities and contributions to nation-building.

He urged citizens to remain committed to lawful conduct, national unity, and active participation in the democratic process, noting that the success and sustainability of democracy depend largely on the actions and values of the people.

“The Minister called on all Nigerians to observe the holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection, urging citizens to recommit to lawful conduct, responsible engagement and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the statement added.

The public holiday will allow Nigerians across the country to commemorate Democracy Day and reflect on the nation’s democratic journey, achievements, and aspirations for the future.
