Residents of Iluke Community have called for urgent government intervention following a deadly attack by armed assailants that claimed the lives of three people, including a school vice principal.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday and plunged the community into mourning while raising fresh concerns about security in the area.
Community sources identified one of the victims as Gani Anifowose, who was reportedly killed alongside two other residents during the incident.
Residents said the attackers operated for several hours, creating panic and confusion throughout the community.
Some community members also alleged that students scheduled to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper were taken away by the attackers during the operation.
However, the Kogi State Government said security operatives successfully foiled what it described as an attempted mass abduction of students.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, disclosed that the attackers allegedly disguised themselves in military uniforms to gain access to the community.
According to the government, although three residents lost their lives during the attack, security forces were able to rescue students who were allegedly being moved into the bush by the assailants.
“The unfortunate attack led to the death of three members of the community. Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the people of Iluke Community, and the entire Bunu District over this painful loss,” the statement said.
The government commended military personnel, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security operatives for their swift intervention, which it said prevented a larger tragedy.
Fanwo explained that available reports indicated the attackers disrupted an ongoing WAEC examination before attempting to abduct students.
He stated that security operatives engaged the assailants in a gun battle and successfully rescued all the students without injuries.
According to the government, one of the attackers was killed during the operation, while several others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.
Authorities said security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
The state government also revealed that additional security measures are being considered to strengthen protection in the affected communities and prevent future attacks.
Residents were urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and provide useful information to security agencies to aid ongoing investigations.
The government further extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
The incident highlights the continuing security challenges facing some communities and educational institutions, particularly as students participate in critical national examinations.
