The Edo State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of three public secondary schools in response to security concerns and reports of a suspected kidnap plot targeting schools in the state.
The decision was announced on Wednesday and is believed to be linked to an intelligence report allegedly originating from the Department of State Services, which reportedly uncovered plans to abduct students within the Edo North Senatorial District.
According to reports, the intelligence alert indicated that security operatives intercepted communications between two suspects discussing the planned operation. The report also alleged that an individual was arrested at one of the affected schools while carrying out what authorities suspect was a surveillance mission.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the affected schools were identified as: Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, Makeke Secondary School.
All three schools are located within the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
The state government explained that the closure forms part of ongoing efforts to protect students, teachers, and school personnel from potential security threats.
According to the statement, all academic and non-academic activities at the affected schools have been suspended with immediate effect until further notice.
However, special arrangements have been made for students currently participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The government stated that candidates will continue to have access to their examination centres under enhanced security measures coordinated by school administrators, security agencies, and community leaders.
The government also directed principals of the affected schools to ensure the safe release of students to their parents and guardians, safeguard school facilities during the closure period, and maintain communication with relevant government and security authorities.
Parents, guardians, and residents of the affected communities were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies as efforts continue to prevent any security breach.
The state government assured residents that necessary measures are being implemented to address the situation and restore normal academic activities once security conditions improve.
The development highlights growing concerns over school safety in parts of the country amid recurring reports of attacks and abduction threats targeting educational institutions.
