Stakeholders in the Ukelle Project, including community leaders, civil society organizations, and local residents, have described current move by the incumbent House of Assembly Member, Hon. Matins Achadu, as desperation taken too far.
It is on record that no ward in Yala ll state Constituency has occupied the position for more than two tenure as this singular act distort the principle of rotation. It also distracts governance and development in a democratic seting.
Hon. Achadu’s bid is strange to the Ukelle Nation and is unacceptable to the people. As a Nation, we strongly urge Hon. Achadu to Adhere to term limits which strengthens democracy and pave the way for the emergence of a new leadership.
As a people, we must take deliberate steps to save ourselves from transactional leadership which has been the bane of the the ukelle nation playing second fiddle among other communities.
However, stakeholders are actively canvassing for improved grassroots representation to ensure that development, political, and economic decisions are inclusive and tailored to local needs.
This movement emphasizes moving away from top-down approaches, aiming instead to empower local communities through direct participation and enhanced political representation.
The Stakeholders are equally demanding for fair representation in political structures to overcome historical imbalances.
For example, in Ukelle, calls are increasing for a two tenure representation from each Ward to represent Ukelle in the state House of Assembly where certain wards that have been excluded from state representation for decades can be given the opportunity to represent their constituencies.
Effective grassroots representation is seen as vital to tackling issues like poverty and unemployment, requiring leaders to be actively engaged with the people, not just during election cycles.
Through Utilizing workshops, focus on youth groups, and surveys to ensure diverse voices including those of marginalized community members—are part of the decision-making process.
However, terms limit is a cornerstone of democratic governance, preventing the concentration of power and ensuring peaceful transitions.
The Ukelle context ensures a two terms limit in the House of Assembly to ensure equity and proper representation.
