Trade Confidence Surges As Customs Generates N3.48bn In February

Trade activity along the Seme-Krake corridor has surged, with the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Seme Area Command, generating N3.48 billion in February 2026, a nearly fivefold increase compared to the same period last year.

Customs Area Controller, Seme Area Command, Wale Adenuga, disclosed that the Command recorded N3,480,970,924.67 in revenue for February 2026, despite the month still ongoing. This marks a sharp rise from the N743,698,652.16 generated in February 2025.

The announcement was made during an interactive stakeholders’ engagement held in Badagry, where Adenuga represented the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.

“For this February that has not yet ended, we have already generated N3.48 billion as against N743.6 million in February 2025. This clearly shows that the flow of trade is getting better and people are building greater confidence in the Seme-Krake corridor”, Adenuga stated.

The revenue surge has been linked to deliberate trade facilitation measures, including a significant reduction in checkpoints along the Seme-Gbaji axis.

Adenuga clarified that only Agbara and Gbaji remain officially approved Customs checkpoints on the Lagos-Abidjan corridor, a move aimed at easing cargo movement and reducing delays for cross-border traders.

He attributed the improved operational environment to sustained collaboration among border security agencies, strengthened by monthly joint security meetings that have enhanced intelligence sharing and rapid response capabilities.

The stakeholders’ meeting was organised by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Agricultural Trade Programme and GIZ International.

The event, themed “Empowering Cross-Border Traders through Trade Information Desk for Agricultural Traders”, focused on strengthening information access for farmers and small-scale exporters operating within the regional trade framework.

While celebrating the revenue milestone, Adenuga emphasized that the Command remains uncompromising in its enforcement against smuggling and illicit trade.

He reaffirmed the commitment of officers to work closely with traders, farmers, security agencies and regional partners to sustain legitimate commerce while safeguarding Nigeria’s economic borders.
