Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to rebuild trust between Nigerians and public officials nationwide.
Idris made the pledge yesterday in Abuja during the 2026 Joint Budget Defence Meeting of the National Assembly Committees on Information and National Orientation.
He acknowledged a breakdown of trust between Nigerians and elected or appointed officials, stressing the urgent need to restore credibility through honest communication and responsible governance.
“When we assumed office, what we saw was that there was a breakdown in trust between Nigerians and public officials.
“Whether these officials are elected or appointed, there seemed to be some kind of mistrust that Nigerians have about what they do or what they say.
“Therefore, our duty when we came on board is to ensure that we return that trust that Nigerians should have in the public officials through what they say and what they do.
“As Minister of Information and National Orientation, one of the major pillars that I came with is to ensure that we return that trust to public communication so that whatever we say, we say it honestly, truthfully, and in the best interest of Nigerians,” he said.
Idris commended President Bola Tinubu for doing so much to revamp the ministry.
He recalled that before the President came into office, the ministry was merged with Culture and tourism.
Idris said the President unbundled the ministry and named it the Ministry of Information and National Orientation
“The idea is that it is not just for the ministry to inform Nigerians, but also to place emphasis on the issue of national orientation.
“You will all agree with me that without proper orientation, whatever thing that we do, will come to nothing.
“Since we came on board, we have been performing, even with our challenges. NAN
