Abuja, – Senator Shehu Sani has launched a scathing attack on the government’s handling of insecurity in Northern Nigeria, saying the situation has gotten out of hand and it’s time for Nigerians to take matters into their own hands.
He said this during the presentation of two books, “The Village and the Vigilante” and “The Perilous Path to Europe: the Sahara Odyssey”, to the diplomatic community,on Thursday at the Mamam Vatsa writers village in Abuja , while emphasizing the need for community involvement in addressing the issue.
He said that Banditry and terrorism have ravaged Northern Nigeria, with groups like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Ansaru causing widespread violence and displacement. Shehu Sani criticized the government’s failure to provide security, citing instances of kidnapping, extortion, and violence.
Shehu Sani urged Nigerians to take responsibility for their security, rejecting reliance on foreign powers. He emphasized the need for leaders to create opportunities for young people, discouraging them from risking their lives in search of a better life abroad.
Shehu Sani questioned the effectiveness of security agencies, citing the use of SIM cards and phones by bandits, and the failure to apprehend them despite spending billions on security. He emphasized the need for locals to cooperate with authorities to combat insecurity.
Shehu Sani alleged that there is collaboration and conspiracy between security agencies and bandits, saying it’s not possible for them to operate without being detected. He called for an investigation into the matter, saying billions of taxpayers’ money have been spent on security without results.
Shehu Sani’s initiative is a call to action for Nigerians to stand up against insecurity and demand accountability from their leaders. The books presented are part of a series of plays and literary works aimed at inspiring communities to take action.
Part of the non kinetic approach to combat the insecurities in the North is the introduction of stage drama in Katsina,Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara state.
