Yobe To Hold Council Election June 6

 Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission ,YBSIEC, has fixed 6th June 2026 for the conduct of local Government council elections in the state

This was  announce in a meeting with leadership of political parties and stakeholders on Wednesday in Damaturu the state capital

According to the Permanent Member 1 of YBSIEC, Mohammad Grema Nguru, stated that the election timeline received official approval from Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.

Nguru outlined the Commission’s roadmap, emphasizing the need for collaboration.

According to him, the Commission will soon issue election guidelines to all political parties.

He urged parties to present candidates of “quality repute and substance” to ensure good governance at the grassroots.

He detailed the eligibility criteria for aspirants to include, Chairmanship Candidates must be at least 30 years old,while for councillorship, Candidates must be at least 25 years old.

He added that all the positions are open to any eligible resident, without gender bias.Candidates must be of sound mind, not bankrupt, and residents of their local community, minimum educational standard of a school certificate or its equivalent is required.All aspirants must undergo security screening.Nomination fees are set at N300,000 for Chairmanship, N250,000 for Vice-Chairmanship, and N200,000 for Councillorship.

Nguru reaffirmed YBSIEC’s commitment to conducting a transparent process. 

He, therefore, said the State Independent Electoral Commission will take responsibility to undertake, organise and supervise the local government council election, which shall be free, fair, credible, and peaceful”, he declared.

He called of the stakeholders to ensure the success of the elections, inviting all qualified citizens to participate in the electoral process. 

He appealed to the media to ensure widespread voter education and urged security agencies to guarantee safety at all polling units”.

The meeting was attended by representatives of political parties and security agencies among others who were updated on the level of preparations.
