House of Representatives has resolved to interface with the Senate leadership over the police pension scheme, after it passed a bill to exempt policemen from the contributory pension.
The resolution followed a motion of public importance moved during plenary yesterday by Jesse Onuakalusi, who represents Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency of Lagos State.
Onuakalusi expressed concern over the prolonged presence of retired police personnel who have been staging protest at the main entrance gate of the National Assembly for nearly two months.
Debating the motion, the lawmakers said they are particularly troubled that the undignified plight of these retired police personnel could significantly impact the morale of officers currently serving in the Nigeria Police Force.
Meanwhile, the Chairmen, House Committees on Police Affairs and Pension, Makki Yalleman and Hon. Hussain Jalo, respectively, assured the protesting retired officers that their demands had been addressed.
Addressing journalists after plenary, the chairmen noted that their demands and agitation were encapsulated and addressed in the Bill waiting concurrence from the Denate.
The Bill, when passed by the National Assembly, will address issues like payment delays and administrative bottlenecks in the current police pension system.
