Benin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, has called on FIFA to deduct three points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The controversy stems from midfielder Teboho Mokoena’s appearance in Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho. The 28-year-old was supposed to be serving a suspension after picking up yellow cards against Benin and Zimbabwe earlier in the qualifiers.
Rohr expressed frustration that FIFA has yet to act on the matter.
“It is not normal that we don’t know the situation about the points on the log table before our games this week,” Rohr said.
“Normally, South Africa should lose three points, and those points should go to Lesotho. But nobody knows why FIFA has not taken this decision.”
Currently, South Africa tops the group with 13 points, five ahead of Rwanda and Benin, and six clear of Nigeria, whom they face in a crucial clash in Bloemfontein next Tuesday. Lesotho trail on six points, while Zimbabwe sit bottom with four.
