Tragic boat accident occurred in Garin-Faji Village, Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, last Friday around 5:30am.
The incident resulted in six deaths, with three people still missing and 19 rescued.
The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, led a joint assessment mission with officials from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, and the Red Cross to the affected community.
Garin-Faji Village is in Sabon-Birni Local Government Area.
SEMA, NEMA, NIWA and the Red Cross conducted a joint assessment mission to confirm casualties and provide support.
Ongoing operations are being carried out to locate the three missing persons.
A joint report on the incident will be released soon by NEMA Sokoto, SEMA and NIWA.
NIWA attributed the incident to negligence, canoe overloading and safety rules violation.
