.INEC commences shortlisting

Amid political alignments and realignments, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that request for registration of new political parties have swelled to 151.

National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, who stated this yesterday in an update after the weekly meeting of the INEC said since the 4th update released on July 23, 2025, eight more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties were received.

According to Olumekun, details of the requests, indicating the proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leaderships of the associations have been uploaded on its website and other online platforms for public information.

“Details will be released immediately after the 16 by-elections in 12 states scheduled for Saturday, August 16, this year.

“Once again, we reassure Nigerians that the Commission shall continue to keep citizens informed on all its activities”, he stated.

“Having created the portal for party registration, the Commission has commenced the shortlisting of the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage.

“Details will be released immediately after the 16 by-elections in 12 States scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025″, Olumekun added.

Besides, he stated that the meeting also reviewed preparations for the resumption of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR.
