National President of the National Council of Women Societies, NCWS, Mrs Edna Azura, yesterday, led the state-wide tree planting campaign in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the exercise, carried out under the “Green Women Initiative,” targeted public spaces and institutions across the local government, where more than 200 trees were planted.
The campaign, previously held in Yola North and Mayo-Belwa LGAs, was part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability and address the impacts of climate change, particularly among women.
Azura, who personally participated in the planting, said the initiative was designed to address both environmental and socio-economic challenges affecting women.
“This campaign is not just about trees; it’s about lives, livelihoods, and our legacy as a people. Tree planting provides multiple benefits including environmental protection, food security, and income generation,” she said.
She added that integrating environmental education, women’s empowerment, and community participation was critical to building a more resilient and greener Adamawa.
The District Head of Hong, Alhaji Umar Mahmoud, who received the NCWS delegation, commended the council for choosing the area and pledged community support for the project’s sustainability.
Maj.-Gen. Haladu Hananiya (rtd) who served as Special Guest at the event, urged residents to take ownership of the project to ensure long-term benefits.
“Trees help clean our air, reduce erosion, and preserve our land. This initiative is for the future of Adamawa and Nigeria,” he said.
A community member, Mrs Hannah Abel, said the tree planting exercise was timely and beneficial, especially in light of recent challenges such as flooding and soil erosion in some areas. NAN
