2027: I’m Running For President, Not Vice — Peter Obi Clears Air

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency in 2027, firmly shutting down speculations of playing second fiddle in the next general election.

Obi made the declaration during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, where he ruled out the possibility of teaming up with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as a running mate.

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi said in response to a direct question about his 2027 ambition.

Addressing the Atiku speculation, he added:

“This is not in play. Nobody has ever discussed that with me. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, ran under the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election and remains a key figure in the opposition. He also reaffirmed his involvement with the emerging coalition of opposition parties, which includes the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” Obi stated.

The 2027 presidential race is already shaping up as a high-stakes battle, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC expected to seek re-election.
