Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has declared that it is ready to enforce the 2003 Building Insurance Act as a way of guaranteeing complete safety of all players in the industry.
This was made known by the Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Felix Obuah, while addressing developers, professionals, regulatory bodies and representatives of relevant agencies in the building industry during a stakeholders meeting in Abuja.
According to him, the Department of Development Control is committed to enforcing relevant laws in the industry including the 2003 Building Insurance Act.
“We stand on the threshold of an important journey as we prepare to implement the 2003 Insurance Act.
“The legislation represents a pivotal step forward for Nigeria, encapsulating the ideals of safety, security and professionalism within our construction and development sectors,” the coordinator added.
The coordinator, who was represented by the Acting Director-General of FCT Emergency Management Agency, Mrs Florence Wenegieme, said the 2003 Insurance Act is not just a legal document, but also a blueprint for safeguarding the lives of workers, integrity of the building and the wellbeing of communities.
Obuah explained that the Act mandates comprehensive insurance coverage, ensure that all stakeholders are protected against unforseen risks and liabilities.
He added that the safety of workers and buildings, protection of lives, employment generation, increase in productivity and enhancement of professionalism is well covered by the Act.
It was observed that participants at the meeting held a consensus view that most building collapse in the FCT occur as a result of quacks involvement in construction.
They all agreed that quackery has been a great challenge bedeviling the industry and all hands must be on deck to put an end to their nefarious activities.
