IMC Defends 75% Fee Hike As NIN Enrolment Hits 120 Million

Date:

National Identity Management Commission ,NIMC, has enrolled 120.4 million Nigerians for the National Identification Number ,NIN.

This is just as the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote also defended the hike in the fees for date of birth modification.

The NIMC boss also hinted that NIMC infrastructures have witnessed improvement.

Coker-Odusote said the expansion in its infrastructure has led to a 40% reduction in corruption within the Commission.

She explained that NIN enrolment remains free for all citizens and legal residents.

But she said the costs for data modifications have been increased, while verification fees have been lowered to reflect current economic realities.

The NIMC boss explained that the cost of modifying the date of birth was hiked by 74.8% from N16,340 to N28,574.

According to her, the new rate does not reflect the country’s inflation rate, which rose to 24.23% in March 2025.

NIMC’s NIN retrieval service on the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data ,USSD, platform rose from N20 to N50.

She said, “We are people-centric in our dealings. Some prices were too high, and we had to adjust them.

“There were various extortions with outrageous pricing. NIN enrolment is free, but if you want to modify your data for any reason, there are costs associated”.

She also explained how NIMC successfully integrated its systems with 120 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies ,MDAs, including the NHIS, NPC, FIRS, Banks, Security Agencies, Correctional Services, School Feeding Programme, NASCO, among others.

She also said under her leadership, NIMC cleared a total debt of N280m, making the agency debt-free.

According to her, 1,300 staff members have been trained and promoted as part of the ongoing transformation to enhance service delivery.
