Red Cross Marks 162 Years With Clean-up In Kaduna

Date:

Nigerian Red Cross Society has commenced a sanitation and sensitisation campaign to improve hygiene among residents of Kaduna South Local Government Area.

Kaduna South Divisional Secretary, Mr Usman Aguno, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Kaduna, yesterday.

Aguno,  said the campaign was part of activities marking World Red Cross Day, celebrated annually on May 8.

He added that the activities also commemorated 162 years of Red Cross community action in the local government area.

He explained that volunteers from the division embarked on a comprehensive sanitation exercise in the neighbourhood, cleaning public spaces, clearing drainage systems, and removing waste from common areas, while also educating residents on proper hygiene practices.

“The signature red bibs of our volunteers, both men and women working side by side, became symbols of hope and service as they cleaned public spaces, cleared drainage systems, and removed waste from common areas.

“This initiative demonstrated our ongoing commitment to community health and environmental well-being,” he said.

He  noted that the team was also visiting schools within the local government area to sensitise students to menstrual hygiene.

According to Aguno, sanitation and hygiene are crucial for public health and individual well-being, playing a vital role in disease prevention, environmental improvement, and overall quality of life.

He added that good sanitation ensures safe waste disposal and access to clean water, while hygiene practices like regular handwashing helped break the chain of infection.

“This anniversary reminds us that service to humanity remains the core of the Red Cross mission, just as relevant today as it was 162 years ago.

“Through practical action and education, we will continue to build healthier, more resilient communities,” he said. NAN
